HUNDREDS REMEMBER NICOLA PIZZA'S JOAN CAGGIANO IN FUNERAL
IT WAS STANDING ROOM ONLY AT SAINT EDMOND’S CATHOLIC CHURCH IN REHOBOTH BEACH TODAY, AS HUNDREDS GATHERED TO REMEMBER THE LIFE OF JOAN CAGGIANO, THE LEGENDARY 46 YEAR CO-OWNER OF NICOLA PIZZA, WHO DIED LAST LEEK.
STEVE ELKINS, OF CAMP REHOBOTH, COULDN’T ATTEND BECAUSE OF A TIGHT DEADLINE BUT BUILT A SPECIAL BOND WITH CAGGIANO OVER ALMOST A 3O YEAR SPAN.
“They were one of the first restaurants, one of the only ones now still in existence that was open year round. It was a place that you know on a Tuesday night in January, when there wasn’t a car in sight, you can go and Nicola was going to be there. It was like going home. It was a warm place to go get something to eat but also nourish your soul and your spirit because she had something kind to say to everyone.”
MANY THOUGHT OF JOAN AS A MOTHER OF REHOBOTH BEACH BECAUSE SHE CARED ABOUT THE COMMUNITY BEYOND FOOD SERVICE.
“I never doubted if I needed something that would be one of the first places I can go and get help not because she was just another business person but because she was a friend.”
IT’S WHY SO MANY CAME OUT TO REMEMBER HER LIFE AND LEGACY TODAY, FROM POLITICIANS TO NEIGHBORS WHO JUST LOVED HER. AFTER TODAY’S MASS, CAGGIANO’S BODY WAS DRIVEN AROUND HER BELOVED NICOLA’S ONE LAST TIME.
JOAN CAGGIANO’S BODY TOOK ITS LAST RIDE AROUND HER RESTAURANT TODAY BUT HER IMPACT WILL RIDE ON FOREVER.
“She really had her touch on so much that went on. A lot of times in was behind the scene. She didn’t care about getting credit for anything, she just cared that it was a good event and that everyone felt welcome. I think that’s her legacy is that she made everybody feel welcome.”
IN REHOBOTH BEACH, I’M TIMOTHY PARKER FOR W-R-D-E, DELMARVA’S OWN N-B-C STATION.
