A journey through history and ancient civilisations
In the Peloponnese you’ll experience the grandeur of Ancient Greece. You’ll stand awestruck in Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, tour Homer’s ‘gold-rich Mycenae’. You’ll catch a sensational performance at the famous ancient theatre of Epidaurus and visit the Asclepius. You’ll discover the temple of Apollo Epikourios at Basses (Bassae), created by the same architect that built the Parthenon, and marvel at Iktinos, another Unesco World Heritage Site. The Peloponnese is a living lesson in mediaeval and Byzantine architecture, particularly the well-preserved castle of Mystra in Sparta and the castles in Methoni and Pylos.
Peloponnese: paradise for activities in nature
The Peloponnese is a paradise for thrill seekers and adventure lovers. There are numerous opportunities for off-roading, driving, hiking and rock climbing in the Taygetos Mountains. The European long-distance hiking trail, E4, passes through here, and there are dozens of other signposted paths in every area. The more courageous will want to head to Lagada that has a rock climbing park.
ΠΥΛΟΣ ΜΕΣΣΗΝΙΑΣ / PYLOS MESSINIA GREECE
Η Πύλος έχει μακρά ιστορία, η οποία συμβαδίζει με αυτήν της Πελοποννήσου. Το ξεκίνημά της χάνεται στα βάθη της προϊστορίας, αφού κατοικήθηκε από τη νεολιθική εποχή. Σύμφωνα με την ελληνική μυθολογία, ιδρύθηκε από τον επώνυμο ήρωα Πύλο ή τον βασιλιά Νηλέα και αρχικά ονομαζόταν Κορυφάσιον, από το Ακρωτήριο Κορυφάσιον, πάνω στο οποίο είχε κτιστεί. Κατά τα ομηρικά χρόνια αναφέρεται από τον Όμηρο ως η πρωτεύουσα στο βασίλειο του Νέστορα, το οποίο ήταν ένα από τα σημαντικά βασίλεια της μυκηναϊκής Ελλάδας, σύμφωνα και με τα αρχαιολογικά ευρήματα του ανακτόρου που είναι γνωστό ως το Ανάκτορο του Νέστορα, το οποίο συνδέεται με τον Νέστορα, βασιλιά της Πύλου, όπως αναφέρεται στην Ιλιάδα του Ομήρου. Αργότερα η περιοχή υποδουλώθηκε στην Αρχαία Σπάρτη μαζί με την υπόλοιπη Αρχαία Μεσσηνία. Κατά την κλασική εποχή ο χώρος της αρχαίας μυκηναϊκής πόλης ήταν πλέον ακατοίκητος, αλλά στην περιοχή της έγινε η Ναυμαχία της Πύλου, το 425 π.Χ., κατά τη διάρκεια του Πελοποννησιακού Πολέμου. Η Πύλος μόλις που αναφέρεται ιστορικά στη συνέχεια, κατά τη ρωμαϊκή και τη βυζαντινή εποχή και μέχρι τον 13ο αιώνα και τη Φραγκοκρατία, όταν η περιοχή της έγινε τμήμα του Πριγκιπάτου της Αχαΐας. Άρχισε να γίνεται πλέον γνωστή με τη γαλλική της ονομασία ως Port-de-Jonc ή την ιταλική της ονομασία ως Navarino, ενώ στη δεκαετία του 1280 οι Φράγκοι έχτισαν το παλαιό κάστρο του Ναυαρίνου στην περιοχή. Το Ναυαρίνο στη συνέχεια βρέθηκε υπό τον έλεγχο της Γαλληνοτάτης Δημοκρατίας της Βενετίας, από το 1417 έως το 1500, όταν και κατακτήθηκε από την Οθωμανική Αυτοκρατορία. Οι Οθωμανοί χρησιμοποίησαν το Ναυαρίνο και τον κόλπο του ως ναυτική βάση και έχτισαν στο νοτιοδυτικό σημείο του το φρούριο του Νέου Ναυαρίνου. Η περιοχή του Παλαιού και Νέου Ναυαρίνου παρέμεινε υπό τον οθωμανικό έλεγχο, με εξαίρεση μια σύντομη ανανέωση της ενετικής κυριαρχίας, με το Βασίλειο του Μορέως το 1685-1715 και μια ρωσική κατοχή το 1770-71, μέχρι την ξέσπασμα της Επανάστασης του 1821, η οποία οδήγησε στην απελευθέρωση της περιοχής. Ο Ιμπραήμ πασάς της Αιγύπτου ανακτά πρόσκαιρα το Ναυαρίνο για λογαριασμό της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας, το 1825, αλλά η ήττα του τουρκο-αιγυπτιακού στόλου στη Ναυμαχία του Ναυαρίνου, το 1827, ανάγκασε τον Ιμπραήμ να αποχωρήσει από την Πελοπόννησο και επιβεβαίωσε την ανεξαρτησία της Ελλάδας.
