The High Tatra is the smallest high mountain range in Europe, a magnificent mountain landscape with majestic rocky mountains and many lakes. The High Tatra National Park was founded in 1947 and is an imposing natural paradise in the heart of Slovakia. Its mountains were created when, in primeval times, the outliers on the southern and eastern edge of the Tatra Massif were forced within a deep graben. Here there is much high mountain plant life, fine endemic species of the Carpathians, and glacial remains. A healthy tree population surrounds crystal clear mountain lakes which came into existence at the end of the Last Ice Age. The Tatra Railway travels from Štrbské Pleso Station which connects a number of the Tatra region’s spa resorts. At first, the line travels alongside a mountain road… with a good view of the local flora. A journey on the comfortable and tram-like carriages became an indispensable means of transport for growing Tatra tourism. In 1892, the region’s first spa and spacious parks were built at Tatranská Lomnica, with government assistance. It includes a botanical garden in which numerous typical mountain plants thrive, as well as rare and endangered species. The mountain station of the Lomnitz Peak appears from within the clouds. The surrounding area is breathtakingly beautiful and the ridges and peaks of the Tatra line up picturesquely. Located deep below, several small mountain lakes appear from among the rocks. What has emerged is an imposing natural paradise, the remarkable Tatra Mountains that are accessible by both road and rail.

Rio Grande Scenic Railroad
In this video we ride Colorado’s standard gauge “Rio Grande Scenic Railroad” from Alamosa to La Veta over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains via Veta Pass. Passenger services were restored to this highly scenic route in 2006 after a gap of 50 years. Originally built as a 3ft gauge line in 1878 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railway, it was converted to standard gauge in 1899. The line to Alamosa opened the San Luis Valley to the rest of the world. Alamosa became the hub for 3 ft narrow gauge railroading in North America, with daily trains serving Denver, Durango, Creede, Salida and
Santa Fe, New Mexico.
After riding the railroad we visit the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, where the endless easterly wind across the San Luis Valley has created towering sand dunes rising 228 metres above the valley floor.

The Šargan Eight Railway - Višegrad to Mokra Gora
Today we continue our adventure through the countries of the former Yugoslavia in search of steam as we say good bye to Sarajevo and head to Mokra Gora through beautiful mountain scenery, we follow the course of the Drina River to Višegrad where we had originally intended to join an international steam hauled narrow gauge train to Mokra Gora, sadly that was not to be, instead we picked up the train just inside the Serbian border. Višegrad is a tourist destination, surrounded by mountains on the banks of the Drina River. I made my way to the deserted station where the restored tracks lay rusting in the warm sunshine, I couldn’t help wondering how different it would have looked if the dream of a tourist railway was ever realised, with a smart engine simmering in the platform waiting for excited tourists to finish taking photographs and eating ice-creams before taking their seats on the train. After a delicious lunch at one of the local river side restaurants, we boarded our motor coach for the journey to the Bosnia and Herzegovina/Serbia border, with tantalising glimpses of the railway passing through the picturesque countryside. Once over the border our smartly turned out class 83 locomotive and train was waiting to take us on to Mokra Gora, through pretty rolling hills with plenty of photo stops to record our progress along this rarely used section of the Šargan Eight Railway. Arrival at Mokra Gora showed how the station at Višegrad would look should tourist trains ever return, with restaurants, cafes, tourist shops, hotels, all the hustle and bustle one would expect in a tourist hot spot.

Atmospheric Steam – Mid Hants Railway – 2018 Autumn Steam Gala (England)
Early morning at Ropley locomotive power depot during a Steam Gala event is the nearest thing to a genuine British Rail steam shed in the mid 50’s. There was still a chill in the air as the autumn sun rose above the horizon adding a warm glow to the clouds of steam hanging in the air, as the locomotives were being prepared for the day ahead. The cheery locomotive crews enjoy the moment sharing jokes and stories before visitors start arriving in large numbers.
Watch the locomotives leaving towards both Alton and Alresford, where they will be coupled to their respective carriages to form the first services of the day. Even more people start to arrive giving the station an authentic early morning rush hour feel.
Spend the day riding the trains and visiting all the stations, including a ride over the full length of the line with the demonstration freight train. The topiary and flower beds at both Ropley and Medstead are a real credit to volunteers who keep both stations in such good order. Finally we head back to Ropley to take a look at the repair facilities and see the light engines returning at the end of a wonderful day, with the setting sun bathing everything in a glorious orange glow. The Mid Hants Railway staff and volunteers deserve a massive ‘thank you’ from all of us who attended this outstanding event.
The railway is a Standard gauge (1,435 mm / 4 ft 8⁄2 in) line that was once part of a cross country route between Winchester and Alton in Southern England. To learn at little more about the line please click on these links -

Bluebell Railway - Driver's Eye View - Sheffield Park to East Grinstead
See the Bluebell Railway as the driver sees it, thanks to the locomotive crew and the Bluebell Railway kindly granting permission to attach a camera to Locomotive No.263. Travel through glorious Sussex countryside to the sound of this delightful (SECR) H Class locomotive over the entire route from Sheffield Park to East Grinstead. Locomotive No.263 was designed by Harry Wainwright in 1904 and built at Ashford Works to haul suburban passenger trains for the South Eastern and Chatham Railway.
A signal was passed at danger at 30:20 – The operations director at the Bluebell Railway asked for an explanation for this action to be included in the forward to this video - The signal was passed at danger under the authority of the signalman, because the signal had failed due to an electrical fault and the driver was in possession of the Electric Token for the section.

Ride the Freight Train at the Mid Hants Railway 2018 Autumn Gala
The Mid Hants Railway (Watercress Line) 2018 ‘Autumn Steam Gala’ was memorable for all the right reasons, a superb line up of engines and near perfect weather. On a number of occasions I’ve watched demonstration freight trains at Gala events and wondered what it would be like to ride with the guard, when I read that brake van rides would be available for a small donation towards the upkeep of the Queen Mary brake van, it was an opportunity too good to miss. I joined the small group of people on the platform at Alresford hoping to get a place in the brake van, it was my lucky day, I mounted a GoPro camera on one of the lamp brackets to record the trip with British Rail (BR) Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 No.92212 at the head we set off for a non-stop trip over the Alps.
