Beaches in Greece have a serene, peaceful atmosphere. Most beaches have shallow, calm, crystal clear waters that make them ideal for young children and families. Due to the country's peninsular shape, big waves do not usually reach the beaches, except those that are exposed to the open ocean, which are mostly preferred by windsurfers. Apart from the long wide sandy beaches, and those lined with pine (in the North), or palm (in Crete) trees and lush green grass in the north, there are many small rocky, pebbly inlets, perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving. There are also numerous remote beaches that are only accessible by boat, and other secluded naturalist beaches lining the coasts of Greece, where nudism is quite prevalent. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Conditions in various beach destinations in the world can differ greatly. During the tourist season, Tropical Weather (in contrast to Mediterranean Weather), can produce unpleasant atmospheric conditions like: Sudden storms, monsoons, floods, clouds, extreme humidity and precipitation, unpleasantly warm sea temperature, dangerous strong ocean rip currents that can pull swimmers away from the shore without them even noticing and huge waves that can cause sea water to lose its clarity and become foamy, murky and dirty. Moreover, due to vast presence of algae, low salinity/iodine levels, excessive bacterial and micro-organic activity (which can be highly pathogenic), the sea color in the Tropical Zones can obtain a repulsive, slimy green color. In contrast to the Tropics, Greek summer is always hot, calm, sunny, cloudless and dry and the Greek sea is blue, clear and a lot safer, not only health-wise but also due to the fact that encounters with dangerous/venomous sea creatures and organisms is extremely rare in Greece, as such species are not endemic to the Mediterranean region. (There is only one anecdotal tale of a fatal shark attack in the Greek islands, and that was reported nearly a century ago).

Ios, is a Greek island in the Cyclades group in the Aegean Sea. Ios is a hilly island with cliffs down to the sea on most sides, situated halfway between Naxos and Santorini. It is about 18 kilometres (11 miles) long and 10 kilometres (6 miles) wide, with an area of 109.024 square kilometres.
According to Plutarch it is thought that the name has derived from the Ancient Greek word for violets Ία(Ia) because they were commonly found on the island and it is the most accepted etymology. Others say that the name is derived from Phoenician word iion, meaning “pile of stones” but Pliny the Elder writes that the name comes from the Ionians which lived in the island. In the Ottoman period the island was called Anza or Aina, and its present name was officially established in the 19th century after over 2000 years of usage. During the ancient times the island was also called Φοινίκη (Phiniki), named after and by the Phoenicians and in the 3rd century, when the island joined League of the Islanders was probably temporarily named Arsinoe after the wife of Ptolemy II Today the inhabitants of the Cycladic Islands call the island Nio, a name deriving from the Byzantine Era. The name Little Malta, which is found in texts of travelers during the Ottoman domination, is related to the permanent presence of pirates on the island. In languages with latin script, the island name is Nio or Io.

Μήλος Milos Greek Islands Travel Tour Guide
Η θέση της Μήλου μεταξύ της ηπειρωτικής Ελλάδας και της Κρήτης, καθώς και η ύπαρξη του οψιδιανού είχαν σαν αποτέλεσμα τη δημιουργία ενός σημαντικού κέντρου του πρώιμου Αιγαιοπελαγίτικου πολιτισμού. Οψιδιανός της Μήλου έχει βρεθεί σε διάφορες Νεολιθικές τοποθεσίες του Ελλαδικού χώρου, όπως αύτη του Δισπηλιού στην Καστοριά και του Μακρύγιαλου στην Πιερία. Εικάζεται πως γινόταν εξόρυξη του οψιδιανού χωρίς να κατοικείται το νησί τουλάχιστον από το 5.300 π.χ. Ο προϊστορικός οικισμός της Φυλακωπής, κοντά στον σημερινό κόλπο του Παπάφραγκα, στη βορειοανατολική ακτή άνθισε κατά την εποχή του χαλκού. Λέγεται ότι πρώτοι κάτοικοι της Μήλου ήταν Φοίνικες ή Κάρες.
Τα περισσότερα αρχαιολογικά ευρήματα του προϊστορικού οικισμού κοσμούν τις προθήκες του Εθνικού Αρχαιολογικού Μουσείου Αθηνών και του Αρχαιολογικού Μουσείου Μήλου. Γνωστότερο εύρημα η κυρά της Φυλακωπής.
Μετά από αυτούς την κατοίκησαν Δωριείς προερχόμενοι από την Σπάρτη, γι' αυτό και οι Μήλιοι είχαν ανέκαθεν φιλικά αισθήματα προς τους Σπαρτιάτες. Οι Μήλιοι έλαβαν μέρος στη ναυμαχία της Σαλαμίνας το 480 π.Χ. και ήταν από τους λίγους νησιώτες που δεν έδωσαν γην και ύδωρ στους Πέρσες. Κατά τον Πελοποννησιακό πόλεμο, οι Αθηναίοι κατέκτησαν τη Μήλο το 416 π.Χ. και έσφαξαν όλους τους άρρενες κατοίκους. Στο 5ο βιβλίο της ιστορίας του Θουκυδίδη, αναφέρεται ο Διάλογος Αθηναίων-Μηλίων, στον οποίο περιγράφονται οι άγονες διαπραγματεύσεις μεταξύ των δυο πλευρών πριν την κατάκτηση της Μήλου.
Αργότερα, η Μήλος ακολούθησε την τύχη των άλλων Κυκλάδων κάτω από τους Μακεδόνες, τους Ρωμαίους και στη συνέχεια τους Βυζαντινούς. Στους πρώτους Χριστιανικούς χρόνους είχε αρκετούς Εβραίους κατοίκους και έτσι ο Χριστιανισμός διαδόθηκε αρκετά γρήγορα.
Καθ'όλη τη διάρκεια της Τουρκοκρατίας ήταν ορμητήριο πειρατών.
Από το 1830, με το Πρωτόκολλο του Λονδίνου, η Μήλος, όπως και όλες οι Κυκλάδες περιλήφθηκε στο νεοσύστατο Ελληνικό κράτος.
Στις 9 Μαΐου 1941 επιβλήθηκε η γερμανική κατοχή στο νησί κατ' εξαίρεση σε σχέση με τα υπόλοιπα νησιά των Κυκλάδων που είχαν ενταχθεί στην Ιταλική ζώνη κατοχής. Την Κυριακή 21 Φεβρουαρίου 1943 αγγλικά αεροπλάνα βύθισαν το φορτηγό πλοίο Άρτεμις¨, που ήταν φορτωμένο με καύσιμα. Στο πλοίο βρήκαν τραγικό θάνατο Έλληνες και Γερμανοί. Τα βαρέλια ξεβράστηκαν στην παραλία της Χιβαδολίμνης και κάποιοι Μηλιοί πήγαν να πάρουν το περιεχόμενό τους, νομίζοντας πως περιείχαν λάδι.Οι Γερμανοί τους συνέλαβαν και από αυτούς επέλεξαν 14, τους οποίους οδήγησαν στο εκτελεστικό απόσπασμα στις 26 Φεβρουαρίου, με διαταγή του διοικητή Kawelmacher. for education, culture, e-learning... 4U2C ...
