Yosemite National Park sits on the western slopes of California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains. Most visitors spend their time in Yosemite Valley, which despite being only 7 miles long and 1 mile wide, packs in more jaw-dropping scenery than just about any other place on Earth.
Near the valley entrance stop at Tunnel View, and stand before a panorama that’s reduced generations of visitors to silence. From Tunnel View it’s just a short drive to Bridalveil Fall. Fed by snowmelt, the fall reaches its thundering peak in May.
The Yosemite Valley ring road follows the banks of the Merced River, which shifts in character as it thunders from the valley walls, before gently winding across the valley floor. The ring road is dotted with trailheads that lead to 800 miles of hiking trails. The Four Mile Trail climbs the valley’s southern wall to two of Yosemite’s great outlooks, Glacier Point and Washburn Point. Further along the ring road is the trailhead for The Mist Trail, which offers stunning views of Vernal and Nevada Falls.
For thousands of years, the Ahwaneechee had villages throughout this valley, but it was at the base of Yosemite Falls where their great chief resided. Take the one-hour hike to the lower falls, or spend the day climbing all the way to the upper falls.
To the north of Yosemite Valley, is Tioga Road, one of the USA’s most scenic highways. Fill your lungs with alpine air at Olmsted Point, refresh yourself by the waters of Tenaya Lake, then spend the day at Tuolumne Meadow, the traditional summer hunting grounds of the Ahwaneechee.
From its high country to its waterfalls, its towering sequoia groves to its valley meadows, Yosemite is an American story unlike any other.

Here is the start of our tour of the North Coast 500. We travel from the south of England to Inverness in Scotland.
The North Coast 500 (NC500) is a circular road route in the far north of Scotland. The route goes through some of the best scenery in the world going through the Scottish Highlands.

John Muir
John Muir, virtually unknown in his native Scotland is a national hero in the United States. He was a pioneering environmentalist who helped found the USA National Park movement.
Alba Media are interested in making a full video/broadcast/film/dvd documentary on John Muir. High production values to do the man justice, we are looking for financial backing and support.
Fascinating life story, beaten as a child in Scotland for forgetting bible recitals his family moved to Wisconsin when Muir was a teenager. He had some incredible travel journeys and met with President Roosevelt to convince him to protect Yosemite and other wild places for future generations.
This short piece is about the John Muir Award, here completed at sea in Scotland.

The Great Britain XI - Days 8 and 9 with 45212 and 31806 - April 2018
Late April would see the eleventh rendition of the Railway Touring Company's annual 'Great Britain' tour - a multi-day excursion which explores the length and breadth of the United Kingdom. After exploring the Highlands of Scotland, the Lake District and Wales, the last two days would see the tour head into Southern England. The penultimate day would see the tour head from Cardiff Central to Yeovil Junction via Bath and Westbury, with LMS Black Five No. 45212 in charge, in place of LNER A4 No. 60009 'Union of South Africa', which had been withdrawn due to firebox issues. From Yeovil, the tour would be top and tailed, with SR U Class No. 31806 leading the train to Weymouth, tackling the arduous 1 in 50 climb of Evershot bank. This would be the mogul's inaugural rail tour, taking place almost a fortnight since her maiden run on the main line for well over 50 years! From Weymouth, the Black Five would take charge once again, and another climb was needed - the climb to Bincombe Tunnels, which is as steep as 1 in 52! The 'U-Boat' would assist on the climb out of Weymouth, and the Swanage-based loco would take charge once again for the final stretch as the tour ventured onto the Swanage branch towards their destination for the evening.
The final day would see 45212 take the train back to London, running via Southampton and Havant, before heading up the Portsmouth Direct Line towards Woking, and on towards London Victoria.
We pick up the action at Claverton, where the Black Five accelerates away from Bathampton Junction, heading through the Limpley Stoke Valley. The next shot comes from Bunns Lane, after the water stop at Frome. Here the tour was running around 15 minutes early, so it's fair to say it caught out quite a few photographers in the process! The third shot comes from Holywell, at the summit of Evershot Bank. Here the U Class slogs up the last stretch of the climb, cresting the summit and bursting out of the 300-yard long Evershot Tunnel, with a small amount of assistance from 45212 at the rear. Following pathing stops at Maiden Newton and Dorchester West, the tour is seen coasting out of the tunnels at Bincombe, heading towards Weymouth. 35 minutes later and it's now the turn of the Black Five to make some noise, and boy it did! The 4-6-0 produces an impressive performance as the climb to Bincombe is achieved with no real fuss, with the 'U-Boat' assisting at the rear, producing the rare sight of a steam banker on the main line. After a reversal at Wareham, the final shot of the day comes on the Swanage branch, more specifically the bridge on Holme Lane. Here the 1 in 78 climb to Furzebrook begins and the mogul once again produces a quite incredible soundtrack, with load 11 and 45212 at the rear.
The final shot of the video comes from Chalton, on the Portsmouth Direct Line. In less than desirable conditions, 45212 storms past, with 37668 giving a good shove at the rear, as they begin the 1 in 80 climb to the summit at Buriton Tunnel.
Another very successful 'Great Britain' tour, and there are already plans in the pipeline for the twelfth rendition next year!

Holiday deals can be found but be warned, the area is very popular with tourists in the high season, many who having found this wonderful area, keep coming back year after year. Dornoch has a reputation for making visitors very welcome and right at home.
If you’re just passing through, maybe driving, riding or cycling the growing in popularity and increasingly famous North Coast 500 (NC 500 – Scotland’s answer to America’s Route 66); the stunningly attractive route around the top of Scotland; then you should find accommodation and restaurants to suit your budget and needs.
If flying is your chosen method of transport, or train, then Inverness is the major hub from which you can easily reach Dornoch and the surrounding area.

The North Coast 500 day 1. Inverness to Applecross

A short video of our first day doing the North Coast 500 road trip. After reaching Inverness from Livingston, we headed north from Inverness to Chanonry point for our first stop and were very lucky to spot dolphins and seals.
From there we headed west stopping at Rogie Falls heading for our overnight stay at Applecross Campsite via the famous Bealach Na Ba (Pass of the Cattle)
We also got to follow a nice TVR Cerbera for a while.
