Mystras, Sparta, Peloponnese - Greece HD Travel Channel
Mystras - Μυστράς, the former Byzantine town, lies on the Peloponnese, Greece, directly besides Sparta.
The fortress was founded in 1249 by Frankish Crusaders, but already in 1259 it was taken by Byzantine troops. Below the castle, the town developed rapidly in the following years to a Byzantine cultural center, inhabited by about 30,000 people. Most were from the nearby Sparta, because the town was not easy to defended.
Highlighted in the town which leads in spirals down into the valley, is the despot palace which will be restored in recent times. It was the most representative buildings of the Byzantine Empire outside of Constantinople.
One of the monasteries is still inhabited today. The sacred buildings with its well-preserved frescoes and the philosophy as a center of the culture, consolidated the reputation of Mystras far beyond the Peloponnese. In 1770, the Albanian mercenaries Ottomans already devastated the city but in 1825, during the Greek War of Independence, it was destroyed so strongly that a reconstruction seemed no longer sensible. The inhabitants relocated again in the newly constructed Sparta. Since 1989, Mystras belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Ancient Corinth - Greece HD Travel Channel
In ancient Corinth in Greece, only the remains of the Temple of Zeus bear witness from the archaic city. Otherwise, the ruins are strongly influenced by the Roman past. In the centre of the Agora one can still recognize the speaker's platform where the apostle Paulus had to justify himself before the Roman dictators.
The well house of the Peirene Fountain is in good conditon; Peirene, a nymph in Greek mythology, is said to be the daughter of the river god Asospus. Many statues once surrounded the large pool.
The wide Lechaion Road, the main shopping street of Ancient Corinth today, still conveys the vitality of yore.
From the theater, only the foundations are still visible.
The adjacent museum displays rich murals, mosaics and sculptures.
A mighty citadel rises on a hill above the ancient town. Byzantines, Franks, Ottomans and Venetians have all left their traces here.

Gythio, Peloponnese - Greece HD Travel Channel
Gythio -- Γύθειο - on the Peloponnese, Greece, is the eastern gate to the Mani. Once it was an important military and commercial port of the Spartans.
We reach Gythio the evening and enjoy the food in one of the tavernas on the harbor. The next morning we explore the town and the island of Marathonisi, which is connected to the mainland by a picturesque causeway.
It is said that Paris and Helen of Troy shall have spent their first night of love on their escape from Sparta to Troy on the island of Marathonisi - Μαραθονήσι.
After Gythio was destroyed first by an earthquake and then by the Goths, the town gained importance again in the late 18th century by the influx of the influential family Grigorakis. Today, their former fortified house on the island is a museum after it served as an operating base for the fleet in the Greek struggle for liberation.
