Mystras, Greece
Mystras, Peloponnese, Greece 2000
Mystras or Mistras (Greek Μυστρᾶς/Μιστρᾶς), also known as Myzithras (Μυζηθράς) in the Chronicle of the Morea, is a fortified town and a former municipality in Laconia, Peloponnese, Greece. Situated on Mt. Taygetos, near ancient Sparta, it served as the capital of the Byzantine Despotate of the Morea in the 14th and 15th centuries, experiencing a period of prosperity and cultural flowering. The site remained inhabited throughout the Ottoman period, when it was mistaken by Western travellers for ancient Sparta. In the 1830s, it was abandoned and the new town of Sparti was built, approximately eight kilometres to the east.

Monemvasia (Greek: Μονεμβασία) is a town and a municipality in Laconia, Greece. The town is located on a small island off the east coast of the Peloponnese. The island is linked to the mainland by a short causeway 200m in length. Its area consists mostly of a large plateau some 100 metres above sea level, up to 300 m wide and 1 km long, the site of a powerful medieval fortress. The town walls and many Byzantine churches remain from the medieval period. The seat of the municipality is the town Molaoi.[2]
The town's name derives from two Greek words, mone and emvasia, meaning single entrance. Its Italian form, Malvasia, gave its name to Malmsey wine. Monemvasia's nickname is the Gibraltar of the East or The Rock.

Inside the Peloponnese - Greece HD Travel Channel
Our journey leads us into the inside of the Peloponnese. Along the coast of the Gulf of Corinth, we head west to Trapeza. From here we take a turn to the south along the monastery Megaspiläon that stucks like a bird nest on a rock wall. In the small town of Rogo we visit the memorial for the victims of the Nazi terror regime. Here, the entire male population of the village was massacred here in the World War II.
After a drive through valleys and high mountain passes and a short visit to the Cave of the Lakes (Spileo ton Limnon) at Kastria, we reach the historic city of Mantinea. The city was often in conflict with Sparta, was destroyed and rebuilt with the help of Thebes and later destroyed again by Slavs . Here is one of the most unusual churches in Greece. During the construction of the church one tried to combine all architectural styles.
Before we leave the highland, we enjoy a marvellous view to the gulf of Argos.

The cultural riches and natural beauty of the Peloponnese can hardly be overstated. This southern peninsula – technically an island since the cutting of the Corinth Canal – seems to have the best of almost everything Greek. Ancient sites include the Homeric palaces of Agamemnon at Mycenae and of Nestor at Pýlos, the best preserved of all Greek theatres at Epidaurus, and the lush sanctuary of Olympia, host to the Olympic Games for a millennium.
Githio(Gythio) is a town and a former municipality in Laconia. The municipal unit has an area of 197.313 km. It was the seaport of Sparta, some 40 kilometres (25 miles) north. Githio used to be an important port until it was destroyed in 4th century AD. Today it is the largest and most important town in Mani. It is also the seat of the municipality of East Mani.

The Byzantine fortress town of Monemvasia, the stone ship referred to by the poet Yiannis Ritsos, stands sentinel on the southeastern coast of Laconia, ready to take its visitors on a historic journey back through the ages.
Castles, walls, old mansions, narrow cobbled lanes, churches, low arches and vaults, coats of arms, imperial marble thrones, Byzantine icons all give the impression of a town untouched by time.
Referred to variously throughout the ages as the Gibraltar of the East, the Castle above the Clouds, or the Castle of Flowers, among others, it is situated on a small islet linked to the mainland by a causeway and bridge, as if floating on the edge of the Myrtoon Sea.
The single entrance that gives the rock its name (moni emvasia in Greek) is a passageway into its past, beginning in the 6th century AD.
