Gythio, Peloponnese - Greece HD

Gythio is a seaside town on the south of Peloponnese. It is the capital of Mani, a mountainous and barren area known for its brave fighters during the Greek War of Independence. Many sandy beaches and interesting sightseeing surround this lovely town. Mavrovouni is the most famous beach of Gythio, while very nice beaches are also Selinitsa and Ageranos. A short walk from the port of Gythio leads to the islet of Kranae where is the Historical Museum. In short drive from Gythio are nice places, such as the Caves of Diros, the town of Areopolis and the fishing village of Gerolimenas.

Η Μάνη είναι ιστορική περιοχή της Πελοποννήσου που καλύπτει τη χερσόνησο του Ταϋγέτου. Γεωγραφικά η κυρίως Μάνη ή «Μέσα Μάνη», όπως ονομάζεται τοπικά, ορίζεται από τον αυχένα του Ταΰγετου Σαγιά και καταλήγει στο Ακρωτήριο Ταίναρο. Η Μέσα Μάνη διακρίνεται με βάση την κατά μήκος κορυφογραμμή στην Ανατολική Μάνη ή Προσηλιακή Μάνη, που βλέπει προς το Λακωνικό Κόλπο και στη Δυτική Μάνη ή απόσκερη ή αποσκιερή Μάνη, που βλέπει στο Μεσσηνιακό Κόλπο.

Η περιοχή της Μάνης περιλαμβάνει τις άλλοτε επαρχίες του Γυθείου και Οιτύλου της Λακωνίας. Η συνολική της έκταση φθάνει τα 1800 τ.χλμ. επί συνολικού μήκους 75 χλμ. και μέγιστου πλάτους 28 χλμ. που καταλήγει στο Ακρωτήριο Ταίναρο, με σπονδυλική στήλη το όρος Ταΰγετος και ψηλότερη κορυφή τον Προφήτη Ηλία (2404μ). Ο συνολικός πληθυσμός της το 1961 έφθανε τους 20.300 κατοίκους, που ζούσαν σε 150 περίπου οικισμούς.

Σήμερα, μετά τη διοικητική αναδιοργάνωση Καλλικράτης, η Μάνη αποτελείται από τους δήμους Δυτικής Μάνης, με έδρα την Καρδαμύλη, και Ανατολικής Μάνης, με έδρα το Γύθειο και ιστορική έδρα την Αρεόπολη.

The Mani Peninsula (Greek: Μάνη, Mánē), also long known by its medieval name Maina or Maïna (Μαΐνη), is a geographical and cultural region in Greece. The capital city of Mani is Areopoli.

Mani is the central peninsula of the three which extend southwards from the Peloponnese in southern Greece. To the east is the Laconian Gulf, to the west the Messenian Gulf.

The peninsula forms a continuation of the Taygetos mountain range, the western spine of the Peloponnese.

Until recent years many Mani villages could be reached only by sea. Today a narrow and winding road extends along the west coast from Kalamata to Areopoli, then south to Akrotainaro (the pointy cape which is the most southward soil of continental Greece) before it turns north toward Gytheio.

Another road, that is used from the public buses in the line Piraeus - Mani and exists several decades now, comes from Tripoli through Sparta, Gytheio, Areopoli and ends in the Gerolimenas port near Cape Matapan.

A walk through the city Areopoli named after the ancient God of war (Aris)! A place lying on the slopes of Mountain Taygetus where the hair of Ancient Spartans still existing.. A pictures small city in which the stones are the main building material, looking tough as the Maniots who are living there :)
