The Cares Trail or Ruta del Cares is one of the most popular treking paths within the Picos de Europa, the route is situated between the province of León and Asturias, in Spain. It runs from the Asturian village of Puente Poncebos to Posada de Valdeón through Caín in Leon along the Cares Canyon. In the old times, the route was the only way to reach both towns during the snow seasons in the winter.
The Cares Trail was first opened in the mountain rock along the Cares river's canyon between the years of 1916 and 1921 to provide maintenance, food and supplies to the hydroelectric powerplant of Camarmeña - Poncebos; It was later improved and expanded between 1945 and 1950.
The Cares Trail runs in between the Cantabrian Mountains and is referred to as the Divine Gorge of the Cares river, It is a pathway at mid-height of approximately 11 kilometers in length. It is considered one of the most beautiful natural sites in Spain, it runs along caves, bridges and pathways sculpted in the rock.
While the Cares river carves a much longer path across the mountains to flow into the bay of Biscay in the Atlantic Ocean. From south to north it runs through, Valdeón (province of León), Cabrales, Peñamellera Alta and Peñamellera Baja. The path known in Spanish as the Ruta del Cares, is an accessible part, through an elevated trail over the river.
The rocks that form the mountains on both sides of the Defile are made out of grey Limestone. In them there are numerous hollows and caves, some of which have been used as shelter for sheep that pasture in the nearby fields. When the route reaches Caín, the Defile opens, and the path continues through a bridge that runs through the town.
The spectacular scenery and the moderate slope of the Cares Trail make it ideal to enjoy Hiking along its path. Out of the two million estimated visitors to the Picos de Europa National Park it is estimated that the Cares trail receives approximately 300.000 hikers as it is the most popular within the National Park. To avoid hiking accidents the use of proper footwear is advised.

Caginera beach comes with more than one story to tell. First of all La Cagonera is no longer accessible by foot, a major landslide closed the only footpath that was built to reach it. If you find this Los Mayanes beach familiar even though you haven’t been here it’s because it’s very very similar to the Cervigón/El Rinconín beach . Yes? No? Los Mayanes beach is located right between the Cervigón beach and San Lorenzo beach in Gijón and has a little bit of both.
You might find Cervigón beach under 2 more names, if you find it at all! Although you will surely see it if you happen to visit Gijón, it does not show up on official maps even if it’s one of the important beaches of this municipality. It’s called Cervigón because it’s limited to the West
The Peñarrubia beach is closed for safety reasons! Which is a pity, really, this beach is extremely beautiful and quite close to Gijón. It’s been closed a few years back because of massive landslides – actually the restaurant on top of the cliffs is slowly going down (closed too) and big rocks are constantly falling.
Arbeyal is the most western beach in the municipality of Gijón, one of the 3 urban ones that are actually located in the city – the other 2 being the Poniente beach and the San Lorenzo beach. For me Arbeyal and the Poniente beach are quite similar.
Poniente beach has also a second name: Natahoyo and a story. And that’s because this beach was artificially created to improve an area known as El Fomento located by the shipyards that still exist in some extend nearby. That happened around 1994 and supposed a complete change of the neighborhood.
Estaño is one of the most beautiful beaches in the municipality of Gijón, maybe because it’s well outside the city (5km away) and thus far, far away from cars, buildings and noise. Estaño is quite secluded but easy to find and get to and that’s because of a footpath that links all the beaches .
The beach of Serín is located to the east of Cape and Islet of San Lorenzo. It’s one of the beaches of the municipality of Gijón, easy to find but not quite crowded in high season due to it being hidden behind high cliffs where the sun shines only in the morning.
The Bay of Gijón, where you will find the San Lorenzo beach, is one of the most beautiful in the north of Spain and definitely the most visited. San Lorenzo is a long urban beach (1.5km long) surrounded by a wide promenade and a string of hotels, bars, restaurants and shops.

THE ROMANS AND THE ASTURIAN GOLD - ASTURIAS (ESPAÑA - SPAIN)
At the end of the first century the Romans had a strong presence in the north of the Spanish peninsula. The legions of Roman soldiers, lead by Augustus Caesar, were finding it difficult to conquer the region but with the knowledge that the area was rich in precious metals, especially gold, the Romans fought on, finally defeating the local Astures and setting up a system of mining the would change the shape of the region and culture of ever more.
Today, Asturias has a rich mining heritage that has spanned over a millennium and visitors to the region can see firsthand how this was brought about by vitising the Archeological museum of Oviedo and the Gold museum of Navelgas.
Better still, there are plenty of physical remains left behind by the Romans such as man-made aqueducts and Roman villas...... which are great for those with a keen interest in Roman history.
The Romans also utilized the local hilltop forts of the Celts/Astures called Castros to store the mined gold as they were considered to be the most protected places while the gold was waiting to be shipped to Rome. There are many remnants of these Castros dotted throughout Asturias and despite been of huge historical importance, they also offer a wonderful and tranquil place to visit. Hundreds of Castros remain unexcavated but there are plenty that have been and a visit to Castros such as San Chuis and Coaña should be considered a must when visiting Asturias.
The story of Roman influence in Asturias is a fascinating one and visitors to the region will marvel as they travel through the national parks and reserves that are today as they where when the first Romans set foot in Asturias. Following the story of the Romans is a great way to discover some of the most wonderful locations in this region.

Known as the Roman Bridge of Cangas de Onís, the “Puente Vieyu” or “Puentón”, this is one of the best-known symbols of the Principality of Asturias. Although this site may have been used in Roman times to cross the Sella River, and this may have been the reason for the foundation of Cangas de Onís, the first capital of the Kingdom of Asturias, in fact the current Roman Bridge” dates to mediaeval times, possibly to the end of the 13th century.
Cangas de Onis Puente Romano stylised and graceful outline, and the line of the arches take us back to a Romanesque style in transition to Gothic. It has three slightly pointed arches. The central, under which the river flows, is by far the biggest and is cambered. The two on each side are of different sizes.
From the central arch hangs a reproduction of the famous Victory Cross, a work of precious metal dating to the start of the 10th century that is kept in Oviedo Cathedral.
