Zonza is a commune in the Corse-du-Sud department of France on the island of Corsica. Zonza is located in the mountain chain of Barocagio-Marghese which extends to the south of the Incudine massif. This mountainous area extends 20 km from west to east from the village of Zonza to the Tyrrhenian Sea and 12 km from north to south from the Bavella pass to Mount Rossu. The village is situated in the Rizzansee river valley on the mountainside opposite Quenza on the D268 road which connects Bavella to Levie.
To the east, the hamlet of Sainte-Lucie-de-Porto-Vecchio is the centre of a coastal area which is irrigated by the Cavu river. No communication road exists between these two parts of the commune. To travel from Zonza Village to St. Lucia, a distance of 17 km as the crow flies, the Zonza massif must be circled to the south and Ospedale forest passed through. This route is about 50 km and takes over an hour.
On 29 November 1993, waters of the coastal Cavu river rose by ten times in the space of half an hour causing rocks, trees, telephone poles to slide down the hill and flooding all the houses on its banks. Taglio Rosso in Sainte-Lucie-de-Porto-Vecchio became isolated from the rest of the area. This flood occurred at the same time as that of the Solenzara river which has its mouth at the town of the same name. Mudslides occurred in almost all of the Sartène arrondissement, from Propriano to Porto-Vecchio.
Sainte-Lucie-de-Porto-Vecchio (Corsican: Santa-Lucia-di-Portivechju) is located on Route nationale 198 on the east coast, between Sari-Solenzara and Porto-Vecchio. The D168A, to the east, leads to the coast and to the village of Pinarello, 3 km away. To the west, the D168 follows the Cavo river and leads to Conca, a village 5 km away.
An annex to the town hall is on the D168a towards Pinarello. The village has shops including a supermarket, a doctor's surgery, a pharmacy, a petrol station and a bookshop. The village also offers a variety of holiday accommodation, including hotels, campsites and other locations.
3 km to the east, the village of Pinarello (Corsican: golfe de Pinarellu), a small fishing port and marina, boasts a magnificent white sand beach that runs along a 10ha pine forest. A road which subsequently becomes a path leads along the Cavo river to the west.

Ajaccio is the capital of Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean Sea. A port city on the rugged isle's western coast, it was the birthplace of French Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte in 1769. His ancestral home, Maison Bonaparte, is now a museum displaying family heirlooms. The baroque, 16th-century Notre-Dame Cathedral, where Napoléon was baptized, contains paintings by Delacroix and Tintoretto.
On the west coast of Corsica, Ajaccio (population about 50,000) is the capital of corsica. The town has wood covered mountains circling it to the rear, and the port and citadelle towards the sea, on the Gulf of Ajaccio. This combination means that the climate in Ajaccio remains mild even during the winter months - hence the town is popular with tourists for much of the year around.
Ajaccio has its origins in a Roman town that was located on the hill just to the north of the present town, and numerous ruins and artefacts have been uncovered from this earlier occupation. Ajaccio's more recent claim to fame is as the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. This will not escape your attention on a visit to the town, as you pass the house where he was born - now the National Bonaparte Museum; the caves where he played; and statues of Napoleon and streets and places named in his honour. Perhaps the most impressive monument is the one in the Jardins de Casone.
The centre of Ajaccio is based around the 16th century citadel (still in military use, so not open to the public), and spreads west and north of the citadel into the town. This 'old town' part of Ajaccio includes the Place Bonaparte, the cathedral, Rue Cardinal Fesch and continues up to and around Place Marechal Foch near the seafront, and is the part that is of most interest to visitors. Exploring the old town you will find picturesque pastel painted houses along narrow streets, and an extensive choice of cafes and shops, many of the upmarket variety.
The 16th century baroque style is quite modest for a town of this size. The most notable highlight inside the cathedral is a painting called 'The triumph of Religion' by Delacroix. Note that it was in Ajaccio cathedral, the Cathedrale Notre Dame de la Assomption, that Bonaparte was baptised (you can still see the marble font where it happened). Another religious monument of note in Ajaccio is the Church of Saint-Rock (on Cours Napoleon), built in the 19th century in a neoclassical style. Place Foch especially is a very popular place to sit under the shady trees in the square and do some people-watching.
As with most Corsican sea-facing towns the harbour in Ajaccio is also a popular place for a promenade, lined with palm trees and a good choice of cafes. Further along you get to the port where the Corsica ferries come in as well as some private yachts that look nearly as large. The old town, around Place Marechal Foch, has narrow streets lined with attractive, typically Mediterranean, houses and is very picturesque. It is also here that you can see (and visit if you are so inclined) Napoleons birthplace.
There are a large number of cafes, bars and restaurants around Ajaccio, and it is in these that you will find the true town - the laid-back casual approach to life that Ajaccio seems to adopt so well.
The rest of central Ajaccio merits an explore as well, to see the grand prefecture (local government office) in the 19th century Palais Lantivy, the Quartier des Etrangers ('foreigners quarter') and the 19th century town hall.
There is also a high quality beach along the coast in Ajaccio. If you follow the seafront promenade you will find other, usually quieter, beaches further along. Along the seafront are also children's parks, petanque areas, skate parks and outdoor gym equipment. Located 200 metres north of Place Foch, the Fesch Museum has a highly regarded collection of Italian Renaissance paintings, originally collected by Napoleon's uncle.

The coastal town of Propriano is found on the coast of south-west Corsica, at the head of the Valinco Gulf and north-west of Sartene. It is about halfway between the major towns of Ajaccio to the north and Bonifacio to the south. Much of the building in Propriano dates from the early 19th century, when the port was established and most of the town constructed. Although the same location had previously been occupied by the Romans and Greeks little remains of early Propriano, which was frequently attacked and mostly destroyed by pirates during the 18th century.
The most imposing monument in Propriano is the Church of Notre Dame de la Misericorde which dominates the center of the small town. Elsewhere in Propriano, the harbour contains a fascinating combination of exclusive yachts and more modest fishing boats (there is a pleasure port and also a commercial port in the center of Propriano). Wander around the harbour for some of the best views of the town.
The town centre is largely one long main street which is pleasant to explore with the traditional houses now often taken over by luxury shops, cafes and bars. It is now a popular resort in Corsica due to the numerous beaches that are close to hand for visitors to Propriano, including the Plage de Lido one kilometre from the town. As you can imagine boat trips and fishing trips are some of the main activities and you can also go quad biking or parachuting in the area.
The coast north of the town is built up however, and it can be a challenge to escape from the crowds. It is also true to say that there are few places of interest to visit nearby compared to some areas. Ferries to both Sardinia and mainland France operate from the town marina.

Day 1: Ajaccio
Our Corsica sailing adventure starts from Ajaccio which is the largest city in Corsica and the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. Feel free to explore the city’s landmarks including the 16th-century Notre-Dame Cathedral, Fesch Museum, and Maison Bonaparte before we embark on our journey. On the first day of our yacht charter trip, we will visit all the picturesque areas around Ajaccio and anchor at nearby coves and small inlets.
Day 2: Cargèse
Our first destination outside Ajaccio is the small village of Cargèse that offers plenty of water sports including scuba diving, jet-skiing, wind-surfing, and swimming. Admire the stunning rock formations and go sunbathing on a picturesque sandy beach. In the evening, you can watch the sunset and have dinner at the excellent Bel'mare Hotel. Before we leave, make sure to visit both Latin and the Greek Church in Cargèse.
Day 3: Golfe de Porto / Girolata
On day 3, we will be sailing down the gorgeous west coast of Corsica and along Golfe de Porto until we reach the protected port of Girolata. Being a part of the magnificent Scandola Nature reserve, this area offers excellent anchorage and boasts a variety of wildlife, as well as crystal-clear blue waters. The Genoese tower stands above the village and is definitely worth visiting. Despite its small size, this village has plenty of basic facilities for tourists, as well as a couple of cool restaurants.
Day 4: Calvi
After a nice breakfast on the yacht, it’s time to sail to Calvi, a charming coastal town with cute seafront lined houses and a majestic citadel. The town’s luxury yacht-filled harbor has all the necessary facilities to make your stay here relaxing. It is also just minutes away from the lovely beach of L’Ile Rousse where you can go swimming. In the afternoon, walk along the beautiful boardwalk or climb up to the citadel for an amazing view of Calvi.
Day 5: Golfe de La Revallata / Girolata
On day 5, we are departing early in the morning to the Gulf de La Revellata which is an ideal destination for water activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, and swimming. After a couple of hours relaxing on the beach, we will sail to Girolata to explore all the deserted creeks and small caves. Thanks to the volcanic origin of the island, expect to see plenty of breathtaking landscapes!
Day 6: Capo Rosso / Cala Di Palù
The sixth day of your Corsica yacht charter includes a visit to Capo Rosso and Cala di Palu. This area is perfect for diving, and there are dozens of local dive schools that rent all the necessary equipment. For dinner, we can go to the lovely Hotel des Roches Rouges that offers both local and international cuisine and boats magnificent views from their outdoor veranda.
Day 7: Bay of Sagone
No Corsica yacht charter vacation is complete without visiting the picturesque Bay of Sagone. Dotted with dozens of coves, the Bay of Sagone is home to a number of secluded sandy beaches where you can find some peace and quiet. Water activities such as windsurfing and scuba diving for all diver levels are extremely popular here.
Day 8: Ajaccio
We are ending our 8 day Corsica yacht charter at our departure point, the charming Ajaccio. Consider spending a day here to explore archaeological sites, cute hilltop towns, and an abundance of excellent restaurants and bars.

Bonifacio is a town on the southern tip of the French island of Corsica. It’s known for its lively marina and medieval clifftop citadel. The 13th-century Bastion de l’Etendard houses a small museum with exhibits on the town’s history. L’Escalier du Roi d’Aragon is 187 ancient steps carved into the cliff face. To the southeast, the uninhabited Lavezzi Islands, a nature reserve, have granite boulders and sandy beaches.
The town of Bonifacio is at the southern tip of Corsica (just 12km from Sardinia) which help give Bonifacio and its harbour a rather exclusive, sophisticated Italian feel - above all around the elegant quay with its palm trees and expensive restaurants. The marina, the citadel and old town, and the views across the harbour and surrounding cliffs are the individual highlights of your visit, but it is the atmosphere and Mediterranean ambiance that will stay longest in your memory.
With a backdrop of cliffs and the citadel above, there are also plenty of bars and restaurants around the harbour to choose from (many rather expensive) this will quickly put you in holiday mood! (Be aware that parking here is very expensive and so choose the car park on the edge of town which is slightly cheaper.) From the port you can also organise your boat trips along the coast or a ferry south to visit Sardinia. We enjoyed the short tour - you get lovely views back onto the town, as well as a good view of the amazing cliffs and small beaches nearby.
Climb next to explore the citadel and historic old town of Bonifacio. Although the climb is quite step you are rewarded with lovely coastal views to distract attention from your legs! Bonifacio is set high on sheer white cliffs which continue around the coast. You can see the famous 'grain of sand' rock in the sea just off the coast from here. Pass through a gateway through the the original walls to discover a picturesque warren of narrow streets and alleys enclosed by the sturdy walls of the citadel. Keep an eye out for the house where Napoleon spent a couple of months with relatives as you wander the streets (Rue des Empereurs).
This medieval old-town in Bonifacio is the oldest town in Corsica and has many tall houses along cobbled streets in a spectacular setting along the top of the cliffs of the white limestone peninsula. The town is split into two main parts with the main town near the main gateway and then a walk to the end of the peninsula here there are military fortifications and a cemetary which is the most southerly in Europe and one of several in France which are built in magnificent locations overlooking the coast, the perfect place to be buried!
There are several individual sights of interest such as a couple of churches, and lots of quaint streets with interesting architectural feautures to admire. Our personal favourite street is Rue du Palais-de-Garde. You can also visit the Bastion d'Etenard (the stronghold of the standard). The publicity describes this as fortifications with terraced gardens but the gardens were almost entirely neglected during our visit. It did however have some excellent views and only cost 2.50 euros
The region around Bonifacio is perhaps best known for having some of the most magnificent beaches on the island - indeed some of the best in the Mediterranean (see also Corsica beaches) - including those at Palombaggia and Saint Giulia. The beach at Rondinara, in a perfect natural bay, is simply stunning.

The Lavezzi Islands, a designated marine preserve, are just off Bonifacio and can be visited by boat.

The prehistoric sites at Filitosa, Casteddu de Cucuruzzu and Palaghju provide an interesting insight into Corsica's long and colourful history.
The town is a major centre for sea based leisure activities such as yachting and diving. Be aware that the success of the yachting is partly due to the fact that Bonifacio is one of the windiest places in France! The setting of Bonifacio, the attractive beaches nearby and other local activities does mean the town gets rather busy in the summer months - not unusual in many of the towns in Corsica - but it is still highly recommended.
