Surry, New Hampshire is located in the scenic Monadnock Region. An agricultural town with good farmlands, Surry was first settled in 1764 and incorporated in 1769 from parts of Gilsum and Westmoreland. It is named in honor of Sir Charles Howard, Earl of Surry.
To the east of the village rises Surry Mountain, where for some years small amounts of mica, copper, lead, silver and gold could be found. Atop the mountain itself is Lily Pond, more than 700 feet above the village and in some places 80 feet deep. ▶︎ Swift River accessible tent camping on the Kancamangus Highway
INTRO:
Nestled among the tall pines halfway between Lincoln and Conway New Hampsshire on the Kancamangus Highway is Jigger Johnson Campground ( The campground has 73 campsites well spaced throughout this mostly wooded campground. The road through the campground is paved and mostly flat, making it ideal for kids to ride their bikes.
We loved waking up to the sun rays filtering through the trees. One can hear noise from the road nearby, so it isn't perfectly silent, but the campground itself is tranquil. It looks like they had logging done recently, so while most sites are shaded, sun still gets through at certain times of day. It is a perfect spot to relax if frills are not your thing--this is a U.S. Forest Service managed campground, so it lacks certain programs and amenities that state parks and private campgrounds often offer. There is also zero cell service or wi-fi, making it a perfect retreat from the digital world,
TIPS:
It is first-come, first-served, so if you want a site with a path to the water it is best to arrive earlier in the day, around 1 pm when new campers are welcomed. We arrived around 5 pm on Friday in September, and while there were not any water access sites available, there were plenty of other options. I imagine that in the summer or peak foliage season the campground might fill up completely.
Our campsite (number 28) was LARGE and flat. We fit our 8-man and 6-man tents in, with plenty of room for parking our gear trailer, and having room to hang out. The water spigot was right next to our site, and we had a path through the woods to the closest bathroom.
Closest cell service is 6-7 miles away, at the high point on Bear Notch Road.
PROS:

Cheshire Rail Trail Ride Series # 3 Whitcomb Mill Rd Keene NH to Westmoreland NH line
Third in a series of video reports of various bike rides on the Ashuelot and Cheshire Rail Trails. This third one covers the journey on the Cheshire Rail Trail from Whitcomb Mill Rd Keene NH to the granite cut at the Keene-Surry-Westmoreland NH line. A great ride only 2 miles from downtown Keene NH and is in good shape. This section of the rail trail is mostly forested and shaded and is a good ride on warmer days. Beautiful masonry stonework along the ride is great, but the best part of the ride is the most impressive granite cut near the Keene-Surry-Westmoreland line just past the Rt 12 overpass. This 1/4 mile long section is anywhere between 20-40 ft deep within the granite cut. It was excavated mostly by Irish immigrants over 2 years from 1847-1849. This ride is approx 5 miles one way. Limited parking is available at the intersection of the rail trail and Whitcomb Mill Rd.

Bedford's other commercial clusters are along Route 101, which extends westward.
With recent expansions to its first-rate school system now taking effect, Bedford has turned its focus toward town recreational facilities, including a 70-acre park with several ball fields, ski trails, fishing and ice skating. The scenic town center offers an array of lovingly preserved historic buildings, including Schoolhouse #7, the Bedford Presbyterian Church, and the town hall. The Kendall Shop Museum and Carriage House offers a variety of exhibits highlighting the community's illustrious past. Other attractions near Bedford include Manchester's Palace Theatre, the Verizon Wireless Arena, the Currier Museum of Art, Pat's Peak Ski Area, the Manchester Historic Association Millyard Museum, Christa McAuliffe Planetarium and the SEE Science Center.

▶︎ Ranger Review: Grand Trunk Review at Hammock Campground, NH
Campground Review: So I would like to start by saying that camping here was not the original plan. We had a backcountry trip that we sadly underprepared for (ran into about three feet of snow right at the beginning of the trail and finally decided to come back when either it's a little warmer or we're a little more prepared. Whatever comes first.)
So we trucked our old, three season boots back to the car and hit the dilemma of where to set up for the night. Luckily -- we were only about ten minutes from one of our favorite campgrounds in New Hampshire. Let me tell you why we like it so much.
First of all- it's first come first serve and only open to the tenting community. This weeds out most screaming children, humming generators, and loud TVs. It's also a pack in- you have to carry your stuff to whatever spot you choose. Generally it's not that much of a hike. We prefer to go as far away from the lot as possible for maximum seclusion, but that didn't happen for us this time around because of all the hardcore early spring campers.
The best part of this camping ground is its views. On a clear night, you can see a ton of stars encompassing around you- the only light pollution coming from you and your fellow campers fire. The river flows right through the campground and makes for some excellent ambiance. Five star for about 12 of the camp spots. The other ones have access to the river but are not directly on top of it.
There are only pit toilets, but there is potable water just at the top of the campground. The fee per night is 24- which it worth it in my opinion because of the spectacular surroundings.
If you want to be close to a ton of great hiking trails, right on the Kancamagus highway for pretty cheap- this is your spot. The friendly campers are just extra.
