There is a tiny place in the world where you can find peacefulness and recharge yourself, surrounded by nature, among fascinating colors and scents of the sea, a small place able to donate deep emotions.
The Pontine archipelago is a group of five island located in the Mediterranean sea easly reachable from Rome and Naples. Ponza and Ventotene are the only ones inhabited and they are very popular tourist destinations, mostly during spring and summer.
The Group of islands have volcanic origin and Ponza is the largest one. Nature has given to the island jagged and rocky costline that change color with the reflection of the sun. The suggestive bays are characterized by crystalline and emerald sea, a truly pristine place.
The island of Ponza has been populated since the Neolithic, but its main centers were born under the domination of Greeks and Romans that used the island as commercial stopover and a place of confinement.
The architectural structure derives from the urban project conceived by the Bourbons, colonizers of the island in the second half of the eighteenth century.
The island has a lot of historical reperts to visit; from ancient caves, dug by the Romans into the tufa below the sea level, dating back to the I b. C., and used for religious purposes, to forts used for the defensive purpose in the late seventh century.
The port of Ponza has been an important site during the history and was built at the behest of King Ferdinand IV. The construction was entrusted to Antonio Winspear, a military and engineer in the service of the kingdom of the two Sicilies.
Today it is the epicenter of island life, a combination of services, entertainment, traditions and elegance. An amphitheater of pastel-colored houses made even more suggestive by the typical boats which stop in the waters of the ancient port.
The island of Ponza has a big range of services, it is full of restaurants that focus their offer on using only fresh local fish. There are beach parties and aperitifs at sunset. The center is composed by several entertainment venues and very popular cocktail bars. At night, there is a shuttle service to the island disco.
Most of the beaches are reachable on foot, mainly in the northern part of the island reachable by bus service and after passing paths or descents you can enjoy the beauty of the sites.
To really enjoy the beautiness offered by the numerous sites it is a must to do the tour around the island organized by many experts of the field. You can also do activities such as diving, fishing and hiking if you interested. It is also possible to rent boats in case you want autonomy in travel.
Palmarola, located about 5 miles from Ponza, is defined by many as the most beautiful island in the world, a superb group of caves and rocks. Uninhabited and wild, a set of uncontaminated bays and beaches where nature explodes in a whirl of colors.

Anzio is a city and comune on the coast of the Lazio region of Italy, about 51 kilometres (32 mi) south of Rome. Well known for its seaside harbour setting, it is a fishing port and a departure point for ferries and hydroplanes to the Pontine Islands of Ponza, Palmarola and Ventotene. The city bears great historical significance as the site of Operation Shingle, a crucial landing by the Allies during the Italian Campaign of World War II.
Anzio occupies a part of the ancient Antium territory. In ancient times, Antium was the capital of the Volsci people until it was conquered by the Romans. In some versions of Rome's foundation myth, Antium was founded by Anteias, son of Odysseus, and brother to Romulus, founder of Rome. In 493 BC the Roman consul Postumus Cominius Auruncus fought and defeated two armies from Antium, and as a result captured the Volscian towns of Longula, Pollusca and Corioli (to the north of Antium).
Anzio and Nettuno are also notable as sites of an Allied forces landing and the ensuing Battle of Anzio during World War II. The Commonwealth Anzio War Cemetery and Beach Head War Cemetery are located here. In February 1944 American soldiers (the U.S. Fifth Army) were surrounded by Germans in the caves of Pozzoli for a week, suffering heavy casualties. A film based on the events called Anzio (1968, directed by Edward Dmytryk) was made, starring Robert Mitchum and based on a book by Wynford Vaughan-Thomas.
Along the coast are numerous remains of Roman villas. One, the Domus Neroniana, has been identified as a residence of Nero. In Anzio can be found the Anzio Beachhead British Military Cemetery and a Beachhead Museum. The Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial is in nearby Nettuno. About 8 kilometres (5 miles) north of the town there is a WWF park with sulphur springs and a medieval tower, Tor Caldara.
Near the ruins of the Villa of Nero, in scenic position near the beach, lies the military sanatorium of the Italian army, one of the most important works of Florestano Di Fausto, built in 1930-33. All along the coast a large number of beaches and sea resorts can be found, including hotels and the famous fish restaurants of the port of Anzio. The city once hosted a Casino called Paradiso sul mare that is no longer active and now hosts cultural events. In the southern part of the town, close to the border with Nettuno, are many Italian art nouveau style houses.
Anzio is connected to Rome by the Via Nettunense (SS207), the Via Ardeatina (SS601) and by the Roma-Nettuno railway that connects Anzio with Roma Termini in around 40 minutes. The railway line also stops in the stations of Padiglione, Lido di Lavinio, Villa Claudia, Marechiaro, Anzio Colonia to the north of Anzio. Ferries and hydrofoils connect Anzio to Ponza.

Pontine Islands - Italy
The Pontine Islands are an archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the west coast of Italy. The islands were collectively named after the largest island in the group, Ponza. The other islands in the archipelago are Palmarola, Zannone, and Gavi to the northwest, Ventotene and Santo Stefano to the southeast. These two groups are separed by 22 nautical miles. From Sabaudia-Cape Circeo peninsula to Zannone the distance is 12 nautical miles, while Ventotene faces Gaeta (21 miles). The minimum distance between Santo Stefano and the isle of Ischia is 22 nautical miles.
The archipelago is the result of volcanic activity and has been inhabited for thousands of years. Neolithic artifacts and Bronze Age obsidians have been excavated on the islands. The islands were used by the Etruscans who carved the Blue Grottos. The earliest recorded history of the islands occurs with the Roman victory over the Volsci at 338 BC. According to a local legend, this was once the lost Kingdom of Tyrrhenia which sank with a narrow strip connected to mainland Italy.
During the reign of Rome's Caesar Augustus, residential expansion on the islands was encouraged and people spread from Ponza to Ventotene. Rome used the two islands as a retreat and a place to exile politically troubling citizens. Some two thousands years later the islands were used for the same reason by the Fascist regime.
The Pontine were abandoned during the Middle Ages due to constant raids by Saracens and pirates. During the 18th century, the Kingdom of Naples re-colonized the islands, and they later became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
Ponza and Ventotene are populated, while the smaller islands are not. Ventotene and Santo Stefano are land and sea conservation areas supervised by the Italian State.
Currently, tiny vineyards, wild herbs and flowers, and secluded beaches and grottos make them a popular tourist destination. ( source Wikipedia )
