Almourol Castle - Castelo do Almourol - VN Barquinha - 4K UltraHD
Set in a small rugged island in the middle reaches of the river Tagus, Almourol Castle is one of the most emblematic medieval military monuments and scenography of the Reconquest, being simultaneously one that best evokes the memory of the Templars in our country.
The origins of the occupation of this site are quite old and, therefore, enigmatic. Some authors have reported the possibility here to have installed a primitive stronghold Lusitanian, or pre-Roman, later conquered by them, and occupation of vacancies throughout the Middle Ages. Whatever, the fact is that in 1129, the conquest date of this point by the Portuguese troops, the castle already existed and was denominated Almorolan.
Situado numa pequena ilha escarpada, no curso médio do rio Tejo, o Castelo de Almourol é um dos monumentos militares medievais mais emblemáticos e cenográficos da Reconquista, sendo, simultaneamente, um dos que melhor evoca a memória dos Templários no nosso país.
As origens da ocupação deste local são bastante antigas e, por isso mesmo, enigmáticas. Alguns autores referiram a possibilidade de aqui se ter instalado um primitivo reduto lusitano, ou pré-romano, posteriormente conquistado por estes, e com vagas de ocupação ao longo de toda a Alta Idade Média. Fosse como fosse, o certo é que em 1129, data da conquista deste ponto pelas tropas portuguesas, o castelo já existia e denominava-se Almorolan.

Situada junto à confluência do rio Zêzere com o rio Tejo, Constância é uma vila e sede de concelho do Distrito de Santarém.
Os municípios de Abrantes, Vila Nova da Barquinha e Chamusca, são o limite geográfico do Município de Constância.
D. Maria II em 1836 alterou o nome desta localidade, que anteriormente se designava de Punhete, para o actual nome de Constância.
Durante o desterro no Ribatejo, foi neste local a residência do poeta Luís de Camões, que aqui escreveu alguns dos seus poemas líricos.

The Castle of Almourol is a medieval castle atop the islet of Almourol in the middle of the Tagus River, located in the civil parish of Praia do Ribatejo, 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) from the municipal seat of Vila Nova da Barquinha, in Portugal's Center Region. The castle was part of the defensive line controlled by the Knights Templar, and a stronghold used during the Portuguese Reconquista.

The Templar Almourol Castle is one of the most known and interesting to visit in Portugal because it stands in a small rocky island in the middle of Tagus River.
The origins of this fortification are a Lusitanian Castro conquered by the Romans in the 2nd century before Christ.
Stage of large battles and some legends of tragic passions (forbidden loves stories that even gave names to surrounding villages) the scenario is really adequate to these stories. The views from its towers (especially the taller one) are very beautiful and the island, with its luxurious vegetation, adds much to the mystery felt. The visit to this castle is made by crossing the river in a small old traditional boat, which circles around the island before leaving the passengers ashore.
