The Village of Dornes, Knights Templar and the Zêzere River - Portugal 2018
August 10, 2018 - Amidst the backdrop of the mountains surrounding the village, what distinguishes Dornes is that it is situated on a peninsula, located next to the Zêzere river.
Dornes also has a rich historical past. The settlement has been around since Roman times.
During the 12th century, the Knights Templar came to this place and built a tower on the remains of a Roman tower to stand guard over the river valley.

Insua Fort and Moledo Beach aerial view - Caminha - 4K Ultra HD
Insua Fort is located on a small island on the extreme northern Portugal guarding the River Minho which borders Portugal and Spain.
A Monastery was founded in 1392 by franciscans in the island over a pre-existent small ermitage. Place of cult, the island was visited by King D. Manuel I after amplification of the monastery. Several wars with Spain and invasions from corsaries obliged the construction of the existing fortress, between 1649 and 1652. Its construction was ordered by D. Diogo de Lima.
A well for drinking water supplied the garrison, consisting of a Governor (Commander) and twelve squares, alternating weekly. This well is notable for is at sea, being one of only three in the world.
Moledo Beach, on the northern end, close to the border to Spain just beside the river Minho, a lovely sandy beach, is distinguished mainly by its beautiful landscape.
The dunes are protected from wooden walkways which combine with the landscape of the mountains that extends into the horizon.

Video Live Walking to Dornes Peninsula Central Portugal Santarem Oct 10th 2018
A great experience, walking to the edge of the Peninsula of Dornes, in the District of Santarem, Central Portugal xoxo Traveling on From Penacova where I lived and worked for more than a year. Portugal has stolen my heart.
The town of Dornes is surrounded by the river Zezere, the second Portuguese river. Unlike the Mondego, the Zezere doesn´t go to the Ocean, but empties into the river Tejo. This river reaches the Atlantic in Lisbon. The Tejo starts in Spain. The Zezere, just like the Mondego, starts in the Serra Da Estrela, in northern Portugal xoxo
