Filled with over 39 trillion gallons of pure Sierra snowmelt and pushed a mile into the Californian and Nevada skies, Lake Tahoe is the USA’s largest alpine lake and one of the country’s oldest, year-round vacation playgrounds.
Lake Tahoe has forever drawn travellers to its shores, from the Native Americans who call this place Big Water, to the trappers, timber cutters and pioneers who followed.
When you’re ready for a little alpine magic, take the four-hour drive from San Francisco to the sunlit shores of Kings Beach. Set on Tahoe’s northern end, this beach was named after local card shark, Joe King, who used his winnings to develop some of the lake’s earliest lodgings. On the lake’s southern shore, is Pope Beach, where you’ll find another Tahoe institution, Camp Richardson.
From Pope Beach follow the bike path to the Taylor Creek Visitor Center. An open-air classroom for the entire family, the center features fabulous interpretative walks such as the Rainbow Trail.
Nearby, at DL Bliss State Park, follow the spectacular Rubicon Trail into neighboring Emerald Bay State Park. This park is home to the Eagle Falls Trail, a moderate two-mile hike that takes in some of the Sierra high country’s finest views.
When the ponderosa pines bend with the season’s first snow, Tahoe transforms into the nation’s favorite winter playground. Whether you’re looking for snow-capped peaks or crystal clear coves, places to bond with loved ones or pockets of pure solitude, The Lake in the Sky has it all.

Since the 1848 discovery of gold in California, Death Valley has experienced over 140 years of boom and bust mining.
Harmony Borax Works was famous for the Twenty Mule Team wagons used to transport the partially refined borax.
Beside gold and silver mining, prospectors scoured the mountains for antimony, copper, lead, zinc, and tungsten in the early 1900's.

The Off-Road Trails of Big Bear Lake
A lot of people don’t expect to find alpine scenery when they come to Southern California, but the Inland Empire’s Big Bear area abounds with it. Located at about 6,700-feet/2,000-meter elevation, Big Bear Lake and its surrounding peaks offer all-season fun, from winter sports at Big Bear Mountain and Snow Summit to hiking, cycling, water sports, and helicopter rides during the summer. There are even some unexpected attractions nearby (like bald eagles and Himalayan cuisine) as well as good wine tasting.

My top five hiking destinations in the US: there are so many places to hike in the United States; I would start with the best, which is Yellowstone National Park. It's an American icon, there's so much wildlife there, and so many opportunities to see nature. Second, I would say the Grand Teton National Park, which is right by Yellowstone; also a great place to see buffalo and bears and other wildlife. I would recommend as my third spot Fire Island; there is actually camping there, even though it's somewhat of a luxury destination, so that's a great way to see nature and also get a taste of the local boutiques. Fourth, I would say Nickerson State Park in Cape Cod, another budget way to experience a traditional getaway destination; great hiking and biking in that area. And finally, I would say the ski resorts of Utah; for example, Alta Resort in the summer has great hiking trails. You can see moose, and you can really get up close with the mountains and nature.

Here is a quick tour of the Reagan Ranch Center Exhibit Galleries in this 22,000 sq ft facility next to the Amtrak station on State Street in Santa Barbara. Here you will find personal items and artifacts on display from Reagan's Santa Barbara ranch, Rancho del Cielo. Interactive and interesting exhibits. A nice complement to displays at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley. One neat item on display is a 1981 blue Jeep Scrambler CJ-8 given by Nancy Reagan to the President on April 2, 1983 as a late birthday present.
