Huntsville, Alabama Rocket City, USA A Spirit Of Exploration - Unravel Travel TV
Huntsville is a city that values exploration. Known as Rocket City, USA, scientists and engineers in Huntsville helped put men on the moon during the Space Race. Today, that same spirit of innovation and opportunity bursts from every nook and corner of the city. After all, you don't get to space without a spirit of exploration. Just like you don't travel without a desire to discover new ideas and ways of thinking, being and doing. Huntsville understands travel. Our community was built around it.
Before and during the Civil War, Huntsville was a center for railroad and river-based trade and commerce. The Tennessee River remains a favorite local spot for summertime fun. Even now, we boast one of the nation’s oldest existing railroad depots where Civil War-era graffiti still marks the walls from the Confederate soldiers who were held captive there.
Unlike many Southern communities during the Civil War, Huntsville's buildings were mostly spared from destruction – leaving the Rocket City with one of the largest concentrations of antebellum homes in the South. The heart of this historic area is called Twickenham – a nod to the city’s original name given by pioneer John Hunt in 1805.
Over time, Huntsville was inhabited by wealthy cotton growers and land speculators in search of frontier property. The growing town turned toward textile manufacturing, establishing several mills that helped organize the town into distinct districts that still exist today as local landmarks of industry and creativity.
Landmarks
Look at the structures across town and you’ll see a beautiful collection of antebellum homes, renovated manufacturing mills, iconic Greek Revival-style buildings, a perfectly preserved down-home hardware store – the oldest in the state – and even a few spaceships. Where else can you find that combination?
In the middle of the 20th century, our bustling town became a critical support line for the U.S. Army before helping to launch the Space Race with the establishment of NASA and the Marshall Space Flight Center. Space exploration is celebrated across all of Huntsville – we are known as “Rocket City USA” after all – but it’s especially celebrated at Alabama’s most popular attraction, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.
Academia has thrived since the early days of Huntsville thanks to Alabama A&M University, Oakwood University and the University of Alabama in Huntsville’s continued development into premiere research facilities.
Expanding further into science, technology and other industries is Cummings Research Park, the second largest in the nation. Established in 1962, this impressive consortium of more than 300 companies adds a bustling population of engineers, doctors, students and creatives. #EmbraceTheGeek.
The history of Huntsville has seen numerous influxes of new faces from all over the world, which makes our history and identity an ever-changing tapestry. From humble beginnings, the “Rocket City” has grown into a future-minded place to live, work, play... and, of course, to visit.

Connecting A City - Greenwood St. Corridor
The Greenwood Street Underpass and Canadian Pacific Railroad Bridge project marks the completion of the multi-year, multi-phased Greenwood Street Corridor project. The railroad bridge and underpass are the final pieces of a larger project that was envisioned by city leaders nearly 60 years ago.
When Minnesota’s Municipal State Aid System was established in 1958, Thief River Falls’ city leaders had the foresight to realize that, as the city grew, another east–west corridor and Red Lake River crossing would be needed. They placed Greenwood Street on the state aid system when much of it was a gravel township road—or non-existent—and maintained it as a priority in the city’s comprehensive plans. During this same period, major employers Arctic Cat Inc. and Digi-Key Corporation continued to grow. Now employing more than 4,000 people, both companies are located in the southwest part of the city, west of the Red Lake River. Residential growth, on the other hand, has been primarily on the east side of the river at the south end of town.
After the completion of the Greenwood Street Bridge, which crosses the Red Lake River, and the Highway 32 Traffic Signals project, work began on the railroad bridge, underpass, retaining walls, and a roundabout at the intersection of Pennington Avenue and Greenwood Street. This $4.9 million project is the final portion of the approximately one-mile Greenwood Street Corridor project and was funded through Municipal State Aid, Federal Aid, and bonding.

Alabama Highway Drive - Interstate 65 N - Mile 280 to 286
Alabama Highway Drive - Interstate 65 N - Mile 280 to 286
Our drive on Interstate 65 in Alabama begins in Birmingham and goes through the cities of Mount Olive, Morris, Warrior, Colony, Dodge City, Good Hope, Cullman, Hartsell, Decatur & Huntsville before entering Tennessee.
Starting in Mobile, Alabama, Interstate 65 stretches 366 miles to the border of Tennessee. North of Birmingham at mile 266, interchange ramps provide access to parallel US-31. It is here that I-65 meets the eastern terminus of I-22, which heads northwest to Memphis, Tennessee, filling in a gap in the Interstate system.
The interstate then continues 98 miles (158 km) in the general direction of Huntsville, passing the city of Cullman on the way. After entering the Decatur Metropolitan Area, in southern Morgan County, the interstate passes Decatur. The highway connects the Decatur and Huntsville Metropolitan Areas as it crosses Wheeler Lake (Tennessee River) on a 2.6-mile (4.2 km) bridge.
The interstate emerges again into the fringes of Decatur, in an open area of seemingly endless cotton fields where it intersects, inside Decatur, with Alabama 20, US-72 Alternate, and the spur-route, I-565 to Huntsville.
Between Walkers Chapel Road in Fultondale and the Tennessee River in Decatur (Limestone County), I-65 has been designated the Ronald Reagan Memorial Highway. The sign designating the north end of this portion of road cites Reagan's speech in Decatur on July 4, 1984. The interstate then continues, passing Athens, and merges with US-31. The 2 routes travel concurrently approximately 12 miles to the Tennessee state line.
Near the northern border of Alabama with Tennessee on southbound I-65 is located the Alabama Welcome Center and rest area. The unique feature of this rest area compared to others is the existence of a large Saturn IB rocket erected on the site as a memorial to Alabama's—and in particular, Huntsville's—contribution to NASA's space exploration.
