Located between Waynesville and Brevard on US Hwy 276, you'll find this amazing area of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Western North Carolina.
I took US Hwy 276 south out of Waynesville headed towards Brevard. It's a smooth winding drive up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and continues down four miles to the Cradle of Forestry Home of the Biltmore Forest School. Not far past the school is the next road you come to on the left which Google map says its National Forestry Road not Avery Creek Road but it's actually Forestry Road 477. Turn left of FR 477, it's a well maintained gravel road and you will see the Forestry sign Roadside Camping Only. Though the road is narrow it is a well maintained gravel road. The first roadside camp is about two miles in at the top and the other seven road side camps are spread out the next two miles. If you keep going on FR 477 you'll come to a Horse Stables to turn around or continue past the Horse Stables and another five roadside camps are on the left. FR 477 comes back to US Hwy 276 turn left and you'll see the Pisgah Ranger Station/Visitors Center. There were 10 marked roadside camps with fire rings on this well maintained gravel road. Quiet and no one around and with day time temps in the upper 70's and night temp in the lower 60's makes it perfect camping weather.
RV'S or Travel Trailers Not Advised but their is Davidson River Campground as you head towards Brevard.

Protecting North Carolina’s Pisgah-Nantahala Forests (Extended Cut)
Pisgah and Nantahala are the two largest national forests in North Carolina. They are also the busiest, drawing an estimated 4.6 million people a year. How those public lands are managed matters greatly to the hikers, hunters, paddlers, anglers, mountain bikers, timber companies, and local communities who use the forest.
In the fall of 2015, a diverse group of stakeholders came together to identify areas of agreement around critical resource issues related to the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests’ plan revision, which will direct management of the forests for the next 10-15 years. These forest users collaborated with the Forest Service to develop management recommendations that would provide protection for special places, enhance varied recreational uses, and manage for restorative purposes where needed to meet the needs of game and fishery habitats.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has designated 54 Scenic Byways to give visitors and residents a chance to experience a bit of North Carolina history, geography and culture while raising awareness for the protection and preservation of these treasures. Routes are carefully selected to embody the diverse beauty and culture of the Tar Heel State and provide travelers with a safe and interesting alternate route.
These byways are intended as an option to the faster-paced traffic and commercial areas found along our major highways and interstates. Following the byways, you will see some of the most breathtaking scenery from the Blue Ridge Mountains to fertile plains and the crystal blue coastline.

Final Thoughts on Free Camping in Pisgah National Forest Recreation Area
Located between Waynesville and Brevard on US Hwy 276, you'll find this amazing area of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Western North Carolina with awesome pull off the road views of some amazing scenery. You can also find free camping in the forest marked with designated tent camping along with trail heads for hiking, wildlife views and waterfalls.
and iconic places along with way like Sliding Rock, Looking Glass Falls and Looking Glass Rock. You could take an entire day to drive the winding route and stop at the many places along the way. Elevation ranges from around 2,100 feet in Brevard to 5,340 feet! It's not recommended for RVs.

Pisgah National Forest - North Carolina
North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest covers a vast area of 512,758 acres. The forest was created in 1916 after the purchase of 86,700 acres form the estate of George Vanderbilt II who built the famous Biltmore Estate near Asheville. Pisgah National Forest is a National Forest in the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina. It is administered by the United States Forest Service, part of the United States Department of Agriculture. The Pisgah National Forest is completely contained within the state of North Carolina. The forest is managed together with the other three North Carolina National Forests (Croatan, Nantahala, and Uwharrie) from common headquarters in Asheville, North Carolina. There are local ranger district offices located in Pisgah Forest, Mars Hill, and Nebo.
The Pisgah National Forest was established in 1916, one of the first national forests in the eastern United States. The new preserve included approximately 86,700 acres that had been part of the Biltmore Estate, but were sold to the federal government in 1914 by Edith Vanderbilt. Some of the forest tracts were among the first purchases by the Forest Service under the Weeks Act of 1911. While national forests had already been created in the western United States, the Weeks Act provided the authority required to create national forests in the east as well. Although tracts in the future Pisgah National Forest were among the first purchased under the Weeks Act, the very first to receive formal approval was the 31,000-acre (130 km2) Gennett Purchase in northern Georgia. On March 25, 1921 Boone National Forest was added to Pisgah, and on July 10, 1936, most of Unaka National Forest was added. In 1954 the Pisgah National Forest was administratively combined with the Croatan and Nantahala national forests, collectively known as the National Forests of North Carolina.[5]
American forestry has roots in what is now the Pisgah National Forest. The Cradle of Forestry, (Biltmore Forest School), located in the southern part of the forest, was the site of the first school of forestry in the United States. It operated during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The school was opened and operated at the direction of George Washington Vanderbilt II, builder of the Biltmore Estate in Asheville. The Forestry Education offered at Biltmore was taught by Carl Schenk. A native German, Schenk was referred to Vanderbilt when Gifford Pinchot resigned to operate the newly formed Division of Forestry. The Cradle of Forestry and the Biltmore Estate played a major role in the birth of the U.S. Forest Service. Today these lands are part of an educational and recreational area in Pisgah National Forest.[6]
Located on the forest property is the Bent Creek Campus of the Appalachian Forest Experiment Station, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
