Learn about Dana Point (2012)
Dana Point has almost 7 miles of prominent bluffs and rolling hills along the coast. Among these bluffs is the famous Headlands. This bluff overlooks Dana Point Harbor and is considered one of the most significant landmarks along Orange County's coast.
The spacious Dana Point Harbor has over 50 shops and restaurants and can moor over 2,500 boats. The Harbor is the gateway to famous Doheny State Park. The State Park is 62 acres and has a beach, tide pool exploration, and a campground. Doheny is mostly enjoyed by longboarders and new surfers. Doheny State Beach is also part of Dana Point. This was California's first State beach! It is located at the mouth of San Juan Creek, forming a fresh-water lagoon. Unfortunately it is said to be one of the most polluted beaches in Southern California. There is a surf beach at the northern end and a campground at the southern end. The campground is very popular with over 850,000 people camping there each year.
Capistrano Beach (referred to as Capo Beach) is part of Dana Point. Surprisingly, Capo Beach has eluded the commercialization that has occurred in the surrounding areas and remains one of the last true beach towns in Orange County. Although there are several beach cottages and older modest homes, this area also boasts many multi-million dollar houses.
Within Dana Point is a residential area named Lantern Village. All of the streets in this area are named after different colored lanterns (for example, Violet Lantern and Blue Lantern). This comes from the fact that 200 years ago, ships that pulled into Dana Point Harbor would use colored lanterns as advertisement of their fares.
There is a great surfing history to Dana Point. Many companies that produce products for surfing began in this city (including Hobie Alter). Surf magazines such as Surfer's Journal and Surfer Magazine had their start (and headquarters) in Dana Point. Most notably, the movie Endless Summer was produced in Dana Point by Bruce Brown. Prior to the harbor being built in 1966, there was a notorious surf break known as Killer Dana. The wave would come out of the deep water and break close to the rocky shore. Unfortunately for those that surfed Killer Dana, there is now a breakwater cutting through its heart. However, there are still many surfers enjoying Doheny Beach every day. Many short-boarders also surf up the street at another world famous break known as Salt Creek. There was a huge megamouth shark caught near Dana Point back in 1990! This rare species of shark is not known for attacking humans but rather feeds on plankton and jellyfish.
Dana Point is a great place for a vacation. There are many events throughout the year to plan for. Spanning two weekends in March, the Festival of Whales has been celebrated since 1972. The popular Tall Ships Festival is held in September. If you are interested in classic cars, the Dana Point Concours d'Elegance has been held at the Monarch Beach Golf Links since 2008. There is also a bike race called the Dana Point Grand Prix each year. Around Thanksgiving the city puts on an event geared to families, the Turkey Trot which contains a 5K or 10K walk/run as well as a Kids' Gobble Wobble race (ages 5-12).

What to do in Dana Point Harbor
Being in Southern California means beautiful beaches, restaurants and weather. One place you can get all of these is the Dana Point Harbor. In this video we will explain what to do in Dana Point Harbor. If you decide to visit or vacation to Dana Point, the harbor is one of those places that you should not miss. You could definitely spend a few days getting through everything from restaurants, to kayaking, paddle boarding, walking, happy hour, sunbathing, Museum, and whale watching there's really something for everyone. We really love happy hour in the Harbor. Southern California can be an expensive place, so going out from 4 to 6, getting reasonable priced drinks and appetizers is always a great thing. The bonus? many of these restaurants with great happy hours in the harbor have awesome views of both the ocean and harbor. Another one of our favorite things to do in the Dana Point Harbor is to rent a double kayak for an hour or two and paddle through. It's really cool to watch all of the boats pass you by while you're paddling down the channels. There are also paddle boards for those of you who would like to try that. My advice is give it 5 minutes and usually you get used to it pretty quickly, don't get frustrated. We really enjoy being able to bring our dog with us when we are walking or exploring. The Dana Point Harbor is dog-friendly so don't hesitate to bring your furry friend with you. I hope this video gave you an idea of what to expect. If you plan your day out right it can be full of fun and you won't have to break the bank.

About Dana Point:
Dana Point is a city located in southern Orange County, California. The population was 33,351 at the 2010 census. It has one of the few harbors along the Orange County coast, and with ready access via State Route 1, it is a popular local destination for surfing.
The city was named after the headland of Dana Point, which was in turn named after Richard Henry Dana, Jr., author of Two Years Before the Mast, which included a description of the area. Dana described the locale, including neighboring San Juan Capistrano, as the only romantic spot on the coast.[9] Although Dana described the anchorage as poor, it is now a developed harbor and contains a replica of his ship, the Pilgrim. The Pilgrim is used as a classroom by the Ocean Institute, which is located at the harbor. This area is designated California Historical Landmark #189.[8]

Filmed in the Summer of 2017, using Sony HDR-CX405 Camcorder.
In this video Im inside the waters waist deep. This Beach is probably one of the easiest to access from the freeway, parking is right in front of the also. The Winds were harsh that afternoon, at times it was very difficult to film.
