Dana Point Strands Beach Headlands Hike
This hike of the Dana Point Headlands Nature Preserve and Strands Beach boardwalk which begins and ends at the Strands Beach (local surf spot) parking lot at Selva and Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in Dana Point California just south of Laguna Beach and Laguna Niguel. Experience beautiful Pacific Ocean vistas from multiple vantage points along the way, including a 360 degree panoramic point at Hilltop Park that boasts views from Catalina Island to the snow capped San Bernadino mountains over 60 miles away.
Dana Headlands Preserve is home to the endangered Gnat Catcher and Pocket Mouse as well as a variety of wildlife including bobcats, coyotes, redtailed hawks, and a host of marine life just off the coast. Listen to California sea lions barking below as you watch Dolphins and Gray Whales splash in the waves. Enviable views of Dana Point Harbor from many points. An invigorating hike for both mind and spirit.
After your hike check out the harbor and The Ocean Institute or hang out a Strands Beach or Salt Creek Beach just up the road. Grab lunch in The Lantern District and check out the farmer's market on Saturdays.

Tour of new Doheny State Beach Interpretive Center
Took a tour of the newly renovated Doheny State Beach Interpretive Center today thanks to Ed Neely and Carol Kelly. WOW!!! This place is amazing!
The center is open on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. To 4 p.m. each week. There's no cost to enter, and the exhibits and aquariums they have are stunning! First class all the way and it displays all the local flora and fauna, fishies, eels, lobster and anything under the ocean locally. Bravo! You should go check this out, but in case you can, here's a video I took.

Stuck in a Death Cave - HIDDEN Dana Point Sea Caves
I went searching for hidden sea caves between the Strand Beach and the popular Dana Point Sea Caves. I found several smaller, secret, sea caves as well as a big rock arch, several tidal pools and even a hidden cove beach. Most people who come here know about the two large Dana Point sea caves (also known as Pirate's Cove Caves) because they are easily accessed by a trail from the Dana Point Nature Interpretive Center. However, some smaller, more interesting sea caves can be found if you hike around from The Strand Beach.

Dana Wharf is the premiere year-round whale watching company in Dana Point. Beginning in 1971 we are the pioneer of whale watching adventures in Orange County, California.
We interact with over 1000 whales during the Gray whale migration in the winter and view hundreds of 90 feet Blue whales in the summer. Sightings of Orca, Humpback, Sperm and Finback Whales are not uncommon.
In addition to whales, thousands of dolphins, sea lions, sea faring birds and even sharks are found year-round in our waters, so we always have plenty of wildlife to see.

Whale Watching at Point Vicente, Palos Verdes, California
The Point Vicente Interpretive Center is a So Cal whale resource. December/January is high season for Pacific whales to migrate north to south. During winter and spring migration, volunteers sit at the center watching for whales and recording their passage.
I recorded one whale as it surfaced several times close to the shore. It rounded a bend and continued its journey as the volunteers tracked the next southbounder. As a bonus, there were also pelicans, seagulls and dolphins hanging out in the area.
Check out the center's site to learn more about Point Vicente and the whale migration.
