After nearly being hunted to extinction, California sea otters--and about 1,000 other species--find a home in Monterey County's Elkhorn Slough. John Bartell hops a boat and gets up close to the floating piles of furry cuteness.
FUN FACT: a group of otters is called a raft.

It was my birthday and lately I am really interested in doing outdoor activities and realized there are so many things around me that I hadn't seen or experienced before. So this opportunity came and we took it. Very beautiful experience. Riding bikes in the fresh beach breeze while seeing some wildlife.

Very Rare Mixed Use Moss Landing Waterfront Real Estate for Sale
Every once in a while a very rare piece of Moss Landing waterfront real estate is offered up for sale and this is just one of those occasions. Located just steps off the Old Salinas River side of Moss Landing Harbor is a relatively new mixed used commercial and residential waterfront property with amazing flexibility for its new owner.
8022 Moss Landing Rd includes a large commercial space on the main level, two apartments on the upper level, a two car garage, a car port, plenty of additional off street parking and an old rustic fisherman’s cottage. Currently all 4 spaces are rented.
The main level commercial space is located in a prime Moss Landing commercial district with galleries, restaurants and beautiful scenery all around. It currently operates as a Spa and has a calming contemporary décor and feel and impactful views of the waterfront behind. At 2230 square feet, this Moss Landing commercial space has flexibility and is suitable for a wide range of future businesses.
The larger 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment sits above the commercial space and has commanding views of the Moss Landing Waterfront below. There is an open floor plan great room concept layout making the views available to every corner of the living space. The approximately 1646 square foot apartment has two bedrooms, one master suite and one with a hall bath. Both are ample in size and have plenty of exterior light.
A nicely sized, roughly 700 square foot one bedroom apartment is situated over the garage and car port and will easily accommodate a couple or people. There is a nicely sized livingroom with a small kitchen, a large bedroom and a nice sized bathroom.
Rounding out this unique Moss Landing property on the waterfront is an old fisherman’s cottage. At just 340 square feet, what it lacks in size is made up for in charm from the exterior. It is the current home of the Elkhorn Slough Safari office.
Moss Landing, CA
Moss Landing was originally called Moss, CA after Charlie Moss, who built a wharf back when it was an active whaling port. The name was changed to Moss Landing in 1917. Today Moss Landing is home to a fishing fleet of around 350 boats and serves as a tourist stop on the way between Monterey and Santa Cruz. There is the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve right next to the Moss Landing Power Plant.
This quaint fishing village is located smack dab in the middle of Monterey and Santa Cruz just off Hwy 1. Moss Landing is a great spot to stop and check out the art galleries grab some fresh produce or have a fantastic meal at one of the great restaurants, including Phil’s Fish Market and Eatery which was featured on the Food Networks “Throwdown” with Bobby Flay. Phil DiGirolamo was challenged by Bobby Flay to a Cioppino making contest and Phil beat Bobby.
If you are looking for a Waterfront opportunity in Moss landing, CA with amazing flexibility, 8022 Moss Landing Road needs to be on your short list of properties to check out.

Salinas River and Ellicott Slough NWR Survey Bee Populations
With pollinator numbers declining, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is collecting data on native bee species found on two refuges. The survey also includes what species of plant the bees are collecting resources from and the time of the year the plant is visited by the bee. This information will help refuge staff make management decisions to aid bee populations.
Kayaking in 360VR! Elkhorn Slough with Jeremy Shore
Sunny and warm-ish Saturday morning with Monterey Bay Kayak's tour guide Becca! She's awesome and so informative, you can tell that marine life is her passion.
Jeremy and I took the 9am (best time!) 1.5 hour Harbor Tour. Two person kayak allows me to take photos and video while Jeremy get a great upper body workout....LOL!!! But seriously, yes!
Early morning isn't always this sunny and clear but the water is always calmer than the afternoon. Wind starts to kick in around 10 or 11 and then paddling out of the slough gets a whole lot harder. Into a head wind!
This is a 360 video so make sure to take advantage of that and get a good look around. See something you want a closer look at? Zoom in! There are tons of southern sea otters and quite a few have pups. These animals were nearly gone from the earth due to the fur trade. Their pelt is the thickest/warmest in the animal kingdom.
Before commercial hunting began in the mid-1700s, an estimated 150,000 to 300,000 sea otters occurred in coastal waters throughout the rim of the North Pacific Ocean from northern Japan to Baja California, Mexico. In 1911, hunting was prohibited under the terms of an international treaty for the protection of North Pacific fur seals and sea otters signed by the United States, Japan, Great Britain (for Canada), and Russia. By then, only a few thousand otters remained, including a small colony of about 50 otters along the remote Big Sur coast of central California.
So pull up a chair, get your VR Viewer of choice and a set of ear buds to listen to Becca talk about this part of Northern California sea-life! All without getting wet OR sunburned! Enjoy!
