Hawaii Kilauea Volcano East Rift Zone Eruption News Update for Leilani Estates #KilaueaVolcano
#LeilaniEstatesEruption #KilaueaVolcano UPDATE (August 16 at 5:30 PM): Unbelievable new images from Bruce Omori of Extreme Exposure Fine Art Gallery taken this morning during his overflight with Paradise Helicopters capture the new black sand beach at #Pohoiki and the slight glow from #Fissure8 that remains. Here’s what Bruce had to say: “Kīlauea's #LERZ eruption has subsided substantially, and only a few rivulets of molten lava were entering the sea this morning, along the coast at Ahalanui and #Kapoho. A tiny bit of glow was visible at fissure 8 intermittently, but for the most part, the pond has crusted over. Gases continue to vent profusely from the fissures along the rift, probably due to heavy rainfall in the area. Although the media cycle has long been over, and the eruption SEEMS to be winding down (only time will tell), the reality of this disaster is still being dealt with by thousands of residents who have lost their homes, possessions, property, and livelihoods... many were not insured... and most will never be able to return to where they once lived. My dear friend,Ikaika Marzo, has helped create Pu'uhonua o Puna, an organization whose sole purpose is to help victims of this disaster. Please pray for those affected, and if you're able to, your donations to recovery efforts would be appreciated very much!!! Mahalo nui loa!!!”
The Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense Agency released an alert announcing they will continue to monitor the situation — but today will be its final daily #Kilauea Eruption Update unless activity significantly changes. The following access policies and restrictions are in effect: The entire flow field, including all fissures and lava features, is extremely dangerous and remains off limits. Highway 137 roadblock near MacKenzie State Park and Highway 132 roadblock between Nanawale and Lava Tree State Park remains closed. Properties not destroyed, but isolated by lava on E. Pohoiki Rd., Mālama Kī Pl., Halekamahina Rd., and E. Pāhoa-Kapoho Rd. are accessible to residents with Civil Defense authorization only. #LeilaniEstates access is limited to residents and a CD Access Placard is required. Property on, and east of Pōmaikaʻi St. is in the mandatory evacuation area. For access, residents must make an appointment with Civil Defense for an escort. Access to Papaya Farms Rd., Noni Farms Rd., Railroad Ave., the Mail Box area, and Cinder Rd. is limited to residents and a CD Access Placard is required. Placards are available Monday-Friday at the Civil Defense office in Hilo, located at 920 Ululani Street from 8AM-4PM.

TOP STORIES:
Waianae High School on Oahu brings us a story about concussions caused by sports injuries. Waianae High School varsity football player Chaz Bollig suffered a concussion when he landed on his neck while trying to catch a ball during a game. Chaz lost memory for an entire week after the incident and claims that he couldn't speak during that period of time. He eventually recovered and returned to the field. The story goes on to mention that the Waianae High School athletic department enforces a seven-step return to play protocol after an athlete suffers a head trauma. The possible consequences of not following that protocol include long term memory loss and, in extreme cases, death.
On a lighter note, students from Wheeler Middle School in central Oahu show us how to successfully perform a kendama trick called The Airplane.
ALSO FEATURED:
Maui High School reports on a wedding photographer/officiant on Maui who anticipates a significant spike in his business after the legalization of same-sex marriage in Hawaii. The law has also had a positive effect on his personal life, as he is in a same-sex relationship and now plans to marry his partner. Students from Mid Pacific Institute on Oahu show how hanafuda—a traditional Japanese card game—can encourage face-to-face interaction in an age when cell-phones and other handheld devices are placing people into personal silos. Konawaena High School on Hawaii Island tells the story of a Kona family obsessed with words, spelling and Bees. Lahaina Intermediate School on Maui introduces us to a local artist who has discovered self expression by power sanding sheets of aluminum. And Punahou School on Oahu profiles a librarian who has found great personal satisfaction in the intricate art of lauhala hat weaving.
The Superhuman World of Wim Hof: The Iceman
Wim Hof first caught the attention of scientists when he proved he was able to use meditation to stay submerged in ice for 1 hour and 53 minutes without his core body temperature changing. Since then, he’s climbed Mount Everest in his shorts, resisted altitude sickness, completed a marathon in the Namib Desert with no water and proven under a laboratory setting that he’s able to influence his autonomic nervous system and immune system at will.
Almost everything Wim has done was previously thought to be impossible - but he’s not a freak of nature.
To demonstrate that any human can learn his methods, Wim offered to teach Matt Shea and Daisy-May Hudson to climb a freezing cold mountain in their shorts without getting cold. But when Matt and Daisy signed up for the training, they had no idea that the so-called Iceman was planning to lead them on a psychedelic journey across Europe that circled the chasm between science, spirituality and mystery.

From award-winning beaches to excellent cuisine, Maui has it all. From luau to land adventures, fine art to fine dining, Maui has a wide range of activities to make vacations unforgettable. The big tourist spots in Maui include the Hana Highway, Haleakala National Park, and Lahaina.
The Hana Highway runs along the east coast of Maui, curving around many mountains and passing by black sand beaches and waterfalls. Haleakala National Park is home to Haleakala, a dormant volcano. Lahaina is one of the main attractions on the island with an entire street of shops and restaurants which lead to a wharf where many set out for a sunset cruise or whale watching journey. Snorkeling can be done at almost any beach along the Maui coast. Surfing and windsurfing are also popular on Maui. And so are naked boobies.

Documenting Ecosystems by Lisa Schonberg
Lisa Schonberg is a composer and percussionist with a background in ecology and entomology. Her practice uses field recording, writing, and music composition to document and bring more attention to topics concerning ecology, endangered species, and threatened habitats, often through multimedia collaborations. Her recent work includes investigations about the endangered native Hawaiian bees, logging in Mount Hood National Forest, and acoustic ecology and ants in Amazonia. Most of her composition work is performed by her percussion and noise ensemble, Secret Drum Band. Through her work she has collaborated with entomologists and is continually pursuing new ways to build connections between practitioners in art, music and ecology. In this lecture, Lisa will discuss her background, the intention and context of her work, and share documentation and audio samples to outline her creative process.
