Great Smoky Mountains Railroad: GSMR 1702 – The Chase through the Nantahala Gorge
Here in western North Carolina along the western most portion of the former Southern Railway Murphy Branch is the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. In this video, GSMR would pull one of their daily excursions through the Nantahala Gorge with GSMR Steam Locomotive 1702 leading the trip out of Bryson City. To start off, we see GSMR’s Nantahala Excursion coming up to Robinson Gap Rd. just outside of Bryson City. From there, I would chase them through The Nantahala National Forest all the way to the run around siding east of Andrews (that portion is currently abandoned). From there, the Excursion is seen heading back towards Bryson City with GSMR 1751 & 711 leading the trip back.
Wasn’t planning on coming up this way, but being in the area, made the side trip to chase them for the afternoon and on into the evening. Totally worth it! As always, enjoy!

Lots of questions about what the benefit of First Class is, one of the BIGGEST is, not only do you get a booth that has goodies at your table (petit fours, gingerbread cookies and more), but even though every train car gets hot chocolate, you get to KEEP your Ceramic Mug (ours looked like this:

Great Smoky Mountains 1702: Thunder in the Mountains
In July of 2018 Great Smoky Mountains Railroad engine 1702 was once again thundering through the heart of the Blue Ridge on excursions out of Bryson City, North Carolina. Filmed on the 20th and 26th of the month, this video follows the 76 year old S160 along the Tuckasegee River, through the mountain farmland of the Thomas Valley, across the high trestle over Fontana Lake, and then into the depths of the steep Nantahala Gorge, where the Sun only reaches the bottom at midday.
Road Up to Southern Comfort Bryson City, NC
This is the road up to the Southern Comfort Bryson City Cabin Rentals. I was able to make this with my 2014 Honda Accord. You have to go fast up the switch backs and don't slow down until you top each one. This road is best traversed with 4wd but we did not have that. In good weather it would be easy for most but not sure about bad weather such as rain or snow...I think I would have been hard pressed. So, rent this cabin but beware the ride up!!! However, you cannot beat the view, amenities, and privacy of this cabin!!!
