Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara e la Grande Bellezza di San Gimignano
Ep.9 - L'Albereta Vernaccia Di San Gimignano DOCG Riserva (Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara)
Nick & Gianni talking about what makes this Vernaccia Riserva extra special as well as why quality wines are in high demand across the UK.
The secret of the excellence of the wines produced by Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara, located in the San Gimignano area (Tuscany), is the correct treatment of the land without the use of pesticides, constant checks on the fruit and careful selection during the manual harvesting of the grapes.
Vintages are only made from fully ripened grapes, which go through a secondary inspection before maceration. The estate are the last of the San Gimignano area to harvest, therefore the wines have a completely unique character and could be regarded as the purest and most expressive forms of Vernaccia di San Gimignano available.
The L'Albereta is made from exactly the same grapes as used in the production of the classic Selvabianca, however it becomes a Riserva once it is aged in large oak barrels for about 8 months, resulting in a wine of a bright golden colour, extremely similar to its younger counterpart, and with a complex yet elegant bouquet expressing light vanilla hints. The palate is sapid, well-structured, and persistent with a well-balanced acidity. This wine pairs beautifully with appetisers, fish and shellfish, delicate red meat and medium matured cheeses. No wonder it's fast become a big-hitter amongst our customers already!

Ep 175: Tuscany Overview with Filippo Bartolotta
We welcome our new Italy co-host, Filippo Bartolotta, a native Florentine, wine expert, writer, and travel company owner. This fabulous normal wine guy tells us about himself, about Italian wine culture, and about how to get the best out of Tuscan wine!
The Show Notes:
1. Chianti is hard to recommend by appellation, the producer is more important (heart and land).
Still, the best areas for Sangiovese are on the northern slopes. Areas between Florence and Siena like: Castelnuovo Berardenga, Castellina, Gaiole, Radda, Barberino Val d'Elsa, San Casciano are great. Colli Pisane, Colli Fiorentine, Colli Sienese have good wines as well.
2. Classico is a safe bet for an old school Chianti with:
A light color licorice orange peel violet cherry terroir!
3. Chianti Classics a minimum of 80% Sangiovese but can be 100%. It includes native grapes like Colorino or Canaiolo, and Merlot, Cabernet, and Syrah in small proportions.
4. Classico also has a Riserva tier (aged a min of 24 months with a minimum of 12.5% alcohol to guarantee the fruit is ripe), and Gran Selezione (aged 30 months in barrel, 13% alcohol minimum).
Example: Montevertine (especially Le Pergola Torte),
5. We talk about how Super Tuscans raised the bar. We discuss Tiganello by Antinomy, Cepparello
6. The best producers pay attention to climate, clonal selection and tension between acidity, fruit and terroir.
7. Great producers

Ep.1 - 1607 Victorya Cerasuolo Di Vittoria DOCG (Casa Di Grazia)
Episode 1 introduces the 1607 Victorya Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG by Casa Di Grazia.
The story behind this wine began in 1607, when Vittoria Henriquez gave her colonists a mission: to cultivate vineyards. Four centuries later, Maria Grazia creates the “Victorya” as a tribute to the success of the mission laid out.
Its name derives from cerasa, meaning cherry, because it was originally produced solely using Frappato grapes, giving it a very pale colour. Today, to gain the DOCG appellation, the wine must undergo refinement for at least 8 months.
Casa Di Grazia's version has a limpid cherry-red colour, fragrant fruity notes and elegant velvety tannins. A wine that leaves a mark in the mind of the holder, much like most charming women.

Ep.10 - Anghelu Ruju Alghero DOC Vino Liquoroso Riserva (Sella & Mosca)
Anghelu Ruju DOC is one of the most representative products of Sella & Mosca, true flagship of the Alghero and pride for the whole of Sardinia: an Alghero DOC Vino Liquoroso Riserva obtained from sun-dried Cannonau grapes, fortified just like the infamous Port or Madeira wines.
Only the best bunches from Sella & Mosca's vineyards are selected at perfect ripeness, between the second and third week of September, when the acidity is still high. They're carefully laid out on frames in the sun for twenty days, lifted from the ground to ensure optimum ventilation and covered at night or in bad weather. Once dried, the grapes are vinified in traditional red style until a final residual sugar content of 90g/lt and a natural alcohol volume of 12%-13% is obtained. At this point the wine ages in steel until the spring, followed by fortification to bring the alcohol up to 19%. Finally, the wine is transferred to large oak barrels where it matures for a minimum of five years in order to refine its structure, softness and overall taste.
This gem should be drunk at room temperature, or even slightly chilled, and pairs best with rich, dark chocolate and desserts alike. It's a superb meditation wine for all those relaxed winter evenings.

Ep.11 - Neromora Irpinia Aglianico DOC (Vinosia Luciano Ercolino)
Vinosia's Neromora can be described as the essence of a pure wine whose fruit is its distinctive quality. A hidden gem in the midst of a competitive world of Aglianico and Taurasi from the heart of Campania - Irpinia.
The Aglianico grapes used to produce the Neromora DOC are grown in the hilly volcanic region near Taurasi, which are harvested in November when they are completely ripe - in basic terms you're getting the best possible Aglianico before you reach the protected DOCG lands of the region's most prized red wine. The wine is refined in French oak barrels for 8 months, giving the wine real finesse and superb structure.
This is a wine that sits perfectly between your everyday reds and your mid to top-end Taurasi, to keep your dining and drinking interesting. In the glass it's dark red, turning to black, and the bouquet has dominant and intense black forest fruit sensations. On the palate it is gentle with pleasant tannins, with reminiscent aromas of currants, caramel and vanilla. If you haven't discovered Aglianico maybe you'll want to start with this.
