Hike in Indian Canyons - Palm Springs
There's three different canyons you can hike within the Indian Canyons in Palm Springs. I went for the Andreas Canyon, which took me a little over 2 hours to hike, but took me a little longer because I was filming.
It's not the most exciting video but it shows how diverse and beautiful the landscape is there. From little streams and lush, green palm trees to desert, rock and mountain all within a less than a mile.
Thanks to Gregg Wright for putting together some music for me to give the video a little more excitement. For more of Gregg's work check out:

Hiking Palm Canyon East Fork - Palm Springs
We enjoyed last weeks hike, the Andreas and the Murray Canyon trail, so much that we decided to do the Palm Canyon, East Fork Loop this Thursday. This was a 7.5 mile loop hike that took us 3.5 hours to complete. It was 1,100 feet total elevation change and we rated this hike moderate because of a few areas of rock climbing.
We drove up to the Trading Post at the Indian Canyons, Aqua Caliente Indian Reservation. Just before we started our trek we stopped to watch at hummingbirds at several large water feeders. In the above video you will see some really closeup shots of these fearless tiny birds fending for their food against competing bees. We were so amazed that they were not afraid of the bees or getting their pictures taken.
The Palm Canyon hike was just as beautiful as last weeks trek but a lot longer. The trails lead to beautiful desert scenery and it was hard to imagine we were so close to civilization. Watch the above video and enjoy watching hummingbirds and the magnificent fan palms and more.

Roadtrip to Palm Springs (San Jacinto Mountains, Aerial Tram, Joshua Tree, Indian Canyons)
During a long stay in Los Angeles in 2013, I decided to spend the holidays in a quiet and relaxing area of California. Located in the Coachella Valley, about a two-hour drive east of Los Angeles, Palm Springs emerged in the 1920s as a retreat for Hollywood stars who were lured by its sunny weather and privacy. By the 1960s, it was a playground for the famous: Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor were all frequent visitors. These days, Palm Springs is making a comeback among celebrities and vacationers who enjoy the midcentury architecture, the Coachella music festival and the retro vibe.
One short hour from Palm Springs, where the Mojave and Colorado deserts join, lies the iconic Joshua Tree National Park. From the history of the tremendous earth forces that shaped and formed this land to the urban legends of the LA rock stars who found the area inspirational, the park is a perfect day trip for hiking the Jumbo Rocks or searching for desert wildflowers.
Palm Springs is the perfect place to leave the rest of the world far, far behind.

Fifteen miles long, Palm Canyon is one of the great beauty spots in Western North America. Its indigenous flora and fauna and its abundant Washingtonia filifera (California Fan palm trees), are breathtaking contrasts to the stark, rocky gorges and barren desert lands beyond. The contrasting greens of magnificent fan palms and more than 150 species of plants within a half-mile radius beckon the desert-weary traveler to this lush oasis of Andreas Canyon

California, a western U.S. state, stretches from the Mexican border along the Pacific for nearly 900 miles. Its terrain includes cliff-lined beaches, redwood forest, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Central Valley farmland and the Mojave Desert. The city of Los Angeles is the seat of the Hollywood entertainment industry. Hilly San Francisco is known for the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island and cable cars.
The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.

Hiking Day 4: Carrizo Canyon, Palm Desert
Hiking Day 4: Carrizo Canyon Ecological Reserve, Palm Desert
When a trail is only available to hikers a few months a year, you need to include it on your hiking list. Due to bighorn lambing (breeding) season, this trail is only open October, November and December. Ironically, the trailhead is a just five- minute drive from the bustling El Paseo shopping district, but you would never know it once you enter the pristine wilderness. The hike begins through a wide sandy wash filled with smoke trees, creosote bushes and desert willows. Once you enter the mouth of the canyon, keep your eye out for the elusive bighorn sheep that blend with nature’s beauty. You have a really good chance of spotting one. Cholla and barrel cactus line the canyon walls; a lone California fan palm is the perfect spot for resting before moving on to explore the falls, which are mostly dry unless we’ve had a recent rainfall. You can scramble the side of the first falls and explore several others to a small palm oasis.
Quick facts: 3 miles; moderate hike; approximately 2 hours
Insider tips: No dogs allowed; closed January through September.

During a sunny morning we walked the Tahquitz Canyon Loop trail (3.5 miles / 300 ft. gain). At the Visitor Centre, you pay the admission fee and get provided a trail map, which list out the points of interests.
The trail let you walk along Native American sites from rock mortars, rock art, natural shelters, and even an old ditch. The highlight is the spectacular 60 ft (18 m) waterfall.
