Winter Driving The Kancamagus HWY, Lincoln To Conway, N.H.
Lincoln to Conway (Kancamagus Highway)
The Kancamagus Highway portion of NH 112 begins just east of the town center. The state highway reenters the White Mountain National Forest, following the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River for approximately 4 miles (6 km), then the Hancock Branch for another 8 miles (13 km), steadily ascending as it progresses eastward. Following a series of hairpin turns, NH 112 crosses the height of land at 2,855-foot (870 m) Kancamagus Pass and begins to descend along the Swift River in the Saco River watershed, which it does for its remaining 21 miles (34 km). Eventually the highway leaves the National Forest and enters the town of Conway, where it terminates at Main Street (NH 16 / NH 113) west of downtown.
The Kancamagus Highway is a very popular tourist destination due to its many scenic views and locations. Two scenic outlook sites are located along the Kancamagus Highway, including one from near the crest of Kancamagus Pass. There are six National Forest campground sites, along with numerous hiking trails.
The Kancamagus Highway opened in 1959 after two dead-end stretches of road were linked, creating a connection between I-93 in Lincoln and NH 16 in Conway. Locally known as The Kanc, the road was paved in 1964, and in 1968 it was plowed for the first time.
The highway is named after Kancamagus (pronounced Kank-ah-MAW-gus,[5] The Fearless One[6]), third and final sagamore of the Penacook Confederacy of Native American tribes. Nephew of Wonalancet and grandson of Passaconaway,[7] Kancamagus ruled what is now southern New Hampshire. Wearied of fighting English settlers, he made the decision in 1691 to move north into upper New Hampshire and what is now Quebec, Canada.
Following Hurricane Irene in August 2011, two sections of NH 112 were closed, pending repair work and evaluation of damage. The Kancamagus Highway was closed from the Sabbaday Falls picnic area across Kancamagus Pass to the Discovery Trail parking area in the eastern part of Lincoln. A section of the western portion of NH 112 along the Wild Ammonoosuc River was closed; as of September 6, 2011, a single lane of the western section had been reopened.[8] As of late June 2012, the highway had been completely reopened, though some stretches were in the process of being repaved.

Driving the Kancamagus Highway, New Hampshire (NH Route 112)
In October 2014 we travelled to the United States and visited all 6 New England states primarily to see the Fall Colours. Following a rather damp 2 night stay in North Conway, New Hampshire, we joined Route 112 in Conway Village and headed west through the White Mountain National Forest with occasional glimpses of the Swift River on our right.
We filmed the first part of the journey using a Kaiser Baas R1 Car Camera attached to the wind-screen.
I forgot to change the date stamp on the camera which is 5 hours in advance being still on UK time!
The music is the 2nd movement of Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No.9 “From the New World” and is taken from my Deutsche Grammophon 1983 CD recording of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Lorin Maazel.
This is also my very first YouTube upload so please excuse any ‘wobbles’!

New England Drive - Kancamagus Highway - New Hampshire
over 11 minutes of Dashcam video..... just driving through a gorgeous forest.... soundtrack Enchantress by Two Steps from Hell... !!
New Hampshire Route 112 (abbreviated NH 112) is a 56.39-mile-long (90.75 km) east–west state highway in northern New Hampshire. The highway winds across the state, connecting Bath to Conway through the heart of the scenic and mountainous White Mountain National Forest.
The eastern portion of NH 112 is known as the Kancamagus Highway, running 32 miles (51 km) through the White Mountains from Lincoln to Conway.[2] 26.5 miles (42.6 km) of the highway have been designated a National Scenic Byway by the United States Department of Transportation under the name Kancamagus Scenic Byway. The highway is known for its views of autumn foliage and is a popular drive in September and October for leaf peeping tourism.
The Kancamagus Highway stays open all winter, although it occasionally closes for short periods while crews clear heavy snows. Its only major intersection, Bear Notch Road, which connects with the town of Bartlett, is closed all winter.
Much of the western portion of NH 112 is also in the White Mountain National Forest, passing through Kinsman Notch with the Lost River tourist attraction. The section between NH 116 and North Woodstock is called Lost River Road.

Ride the Kancamagus Highway New Hampshire - Part 1
Ride the Kancamagus Highway September, 29th 2013 in Lincoln, New Hampshire, USA. Ride with me on my motorcycle and view some of the early Fall foliage of 2013. The foliage colors were at about 75% peak when this video was shot. This video taken of my ride on the Kancamagus Highway, starts near the off ramp at exit 32, I-93, route 112 in Lincoln New Hampshire USA and rides to the first scenic stop on the Kancamagus. This is one of the nicest roads to ride in New Hampshire especially in the Fall when the trees are starting to show their colors. Watch the yellow, red, orange and green foliage colors as you ride with me for this 16 minute video. Video was taken with a GoPro Hero3 camera attached to a chest harness just under my chin. The view of the video is seen as if you are driving the motorcycle. See for yourself. Enjoy! More videos to come.....

It stretches 341/2 miles from Conway in the east to Lincoln in the west. “The Kanc,” as it is known, traversest he White Mountain National Forest, crossing the flank of Mt. Driving to North Conway after Nor'easter Stella March 2017 from our cabin in Jackson, New Hampshire which is north of North Conway thru the town of North Conway, N.H..
North Conway is a census-designated place (CDP) in eastern Carroll County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 2,349 at the 2010 census. A year-round resort area, North Conway is the largest village within the town of Conway, which is bounded on the east by the Maine state line. The White Mountain National Forest is to the west and north. Conway is home to Cathedral Ledge (popular with climbers), Echo Lake State Park, and Mount Cranmore. North Conway is known for its large number of outlet shops.
Chartered in 1765 by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth, the town is named for Henry Seymour Conway, ambitious son of a prominent English family, who was elected to the House of Commons at age twenty, fought at Culloden, and became Secretary of State. Early settlers called the area Pequawket (known colloquially as Pigwacket), adopting the name of the Abenaki Indian village which stretched down the Saco River to its stockaded center at Fryeburg, Maine.
North Conway is located in the White Mountains, with Mount Washington located to the northwest. The rugged terrain became popular in the 19th century with artists. Their paintings were known collectively as White Mountain art, which in turn attracted tourists to the area, particularly after the Portsmouth, Great Falls & Conway Railroad extended service in 1872 to North Conway. In 1874, the line built a Second Empire depot, designed by Nathaniel J. Bradlee. In 1932, snow trains began carrying enthusiasts to the birthplace of American skiing, as North Conway is known.
Increasing automobile travel brought the decline of trains. The railroad, then part of the Boston & Maine, abandoned passenger service to the area in 1961, and freight service in 1972. Subsequently, the Conway Scenic Railroad was established. Today, the line offers visitors a tour of the region, including Crawford Notch. The station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In the late 1980s, the White Mountain Airport closed and was redeveloped as a large outlet mall called Settlers' Green Outlet Village. Continued growth through the 1990s and 2000s in North Conway and the villages nearby made Conway the most populous community in Carroll County. Traffic congestion led to an overhaul of the road system, including widening Route 16 through North Conway village and constructing a road parallel to Route 16 to allow traffic to move between Redstone and Intervale uninterrupted. A bypass of the area is being developed.
North Conway remains a popular destination due to its shopping, recreation, and attractions.

Kancamagus Highway*New Hampshire*September Song*Willie Nelson
Being from New Hampshire the Fall Season September-October was always full of leaf peepers from around the globe on tours eyeing the state's beautiful wonders and the magic it beholds with natures painted leaves...
Kancamagus Highway Route 112 is considered the best fall foliage in the United States so here is a glimpse of the foliage...
I enjoyed driving the highway on my way to the perfect picnic spot and picture taking by the many waterfalls...growing up in the White Mountains of New Hampshire Dates were cheap taking them in the forests with chicken sandwiches I made, Wise potato chips and pickles and some cokes on ice but none complained as a makeout session followed my picnic lunches...a way to a woman's heart was catering to them making them feel special and I learned to accomplish that very well...get cooking boys and don't over cook the chicken or it's tough...
Lyrics below...
Oh, it's a long, long while
From May to December
But the days grow short,
When you reach September.
When the autumn weather
Turn leaves to flame
One hasn't got time
For the waiting game.
Oh the days dwindle down
To a precious few . . .
September, November . . .
And these few precious days
I'll spend with you.
These precious days
I'll spend with you.
Oh the days dwindle down
To a precious few . . .
September, November . . .
And these few precious days
I'll spend with you.
These precious days
I'll spend with you.
These precious days
I'll spend with you.
