벌거벗은 동상을 위해 세계 각국에서 보낸 의상들이 있다기에 나는 ‘왕의 집’ 박물관으로 향했다. 들어서자마자, 각양각색의 옷을 입은 동상들이 마치 쌍둥이 형제처럼 늘어서있다. 세계에서 가장 옷이 많은 동상이라는 오줌싸개 소년은, 무려 옷이 600벌이나 된다고 한다. 한 번에 모두 입혀놓을 수 없어, 정기적으로 갈아입힌다고 하는데, 마침 우리나라에서 보내줬다는 고운 색동 한복이 전시돼 있었다. 한복을 입은 동상이라니, 왠지 우습기도 한 것이 또 한편으론 꽤 잘 어울려 보이기도 했다. 박물관엔 오줌싸개 동상 말고도, 브뤼셀의 역사와 관련된 자료들을 함께 전시하고 있다. 브뤼셀을 서유럽의 중심으로 발전시킨 가장 큰 원동력은 15, 16세기 활발한 해외무역을 이끌어나가던 다양한 길드, 동업자 조합이었다. 잡화, 빵, 염색, 목공 등 다양한 분야의 조합 하우스가 모인 곳이 바로 지금의 그랑플라스와 중심시가를 형성하게 된 것이다. 좁은 땅에서 세계로 뻗어나갔던 아이디어와 기술, 그리고 이를 통해 발전한 도시, 수세기 전 브뤼셀 사람들의 의식은 지금 현대를 살아가는 우리가 보기에도 앞선 안목을 갖췄다는 생각이 든다. 한편 교통과 무역의 중심지로, 도시의 발전은 주변 열강의 침략을 불러오게 된다. 프랑스의 침공 때는 온 시가지가 불길에 휩싸였다는데, 오줌싸개 소년이 바로 이 불길을 껐다는 전설의 주인공이라는 설이 있다．
