Slash Burning at OSU's Old-Growth Cut - Part 1
On November 15th, 2019, Oregon State University's College of Forestry staff lit dozens of slash piles, burning hundreds of tons of woody debris. The OSU administration and Dean of the College of Forestry ignored our calls to not burn the slash. The burning of the slash was unnecessary from a forest management perspective - and in opposition to President Ray's commitments to reduce the University's carbon footprint.
Leaving the slash piles intact would have provided numerous research opportunities and let the organic material decay slowly, providing wildlife habitat, storing carbon for many decades, and helping to heal the damaged ecosystem. In the relatively most forests of Western Oregon, letting the slash decay naturally presents minimal fire risk. Tree plantations, with their dead and dry understory, and even canopy present far greater fire risk than the old-growth forests they have replaced.
These fires smoldered for weeks, filling our valley with smoke. The College claims to be a leader in forestry education, yet this is a perfect example of how they are following the misguided, environmentally-destructive practices of the timber industry. Slash burning of logging debris pollutes our air, warms our planet, and consumes the very organic material that rebuilds the forest soils. Another lost opportunity for leadership by the OSU administration, the Dean, and the Research Forest managers...at the expense of our planet.

Slash Burning at OSU's Old Growth Cut - Part 2
More footage of the aftermath of Oregon State University's burning of logging slash at the site of the old-growth cutting from May of 2019. Due to a weather inversion, the smoke filled the Soap Creek Valley for many days. Hundreds of tons of wood debris was burned, making a sizable contribution to OSU's carbon footprint. This footage was taken the day after the piles were lit. Some of the piles were still smoldering almost three weeks later.
The College claims to be a leader in forestry education, yet this is a perfect example of how they are following the misguided, environmentally-destructive practices of the timber industry. 電子工学部ではフォード・モーターとの産学提携により、同社初のハイブリッド車のシステムを完成させた他、2003年には世界で最初の透明薄膜トランジスタが作成された。生物資源学科では現在バイオディーゼル燃料を用いた実用試験を学内を走るシャトルバスを使って証明実験中。大学キャンパス郊外にはアメリカ国内でも数少ない常時稼働の実験用の原子炉OSTR (The Oregon State University TRIGA Reactor、出力1 MWのTRIGA Mk.II型原子炉) があり、原子化学科 (Nuclear chemistry) の大学院生を中心に研究に用いられている。
肥沃なウィラメット渓谷の中間に位置し、森林学研究向けのマクドナルド・ダン実験林 (McDonald-Dunn research forest) を含めた577 エーカー (2.34 km2) のキャンパスはたくさんの農地へ近接し、有名な農業プログラム向けに卓越した基礎となっている。50,000人以上の永住者が住むコーバリス市には有名な大規模公共図書館がある他、世界の中で2番目に大きなヒューレット・パッカード社の工場がある。OSU は南カリフォルニア大学よる研究の中で「パシフィック・テン・カンファレンスの中で一番安全なキャンパス」だと評価された。

Oregon State University (OSU) is a public research university in Corvallis, Oregon. The university offers more than 200 undergraduate degree programs along with a variety of graduate and doctoral degrees. It is also the largest university in the state, with a total enrollment exceeding 28,000. More than 230,000 students have graduated from OSU since its founding. The Carnegie Foundation designates Oregon State University as a Community Engagement university and classifies it as a doctoral university with a status of Highest research activity.OSU is one of 73 land-grant universities in the United States. The school is also a sea-grant, space-grant, and sun-grant institution, making it one of only three U.S. institutions to obtain all four designations and one of two public universities to do so. (Cornell and Penn State are the only others with similar designation; Penn State is the only public university with matching designations.) OSU received $441 million in research funding for the 2017 fiscal year.
