Dog Day at Osborn Aquatic Center 2013
Corvallis Parks and Recreation's Osborn Aquatic Center hosted its ninth annual Dog Day on Saturday October 5, 2013, which attracted nearly 1,000 people and 600 dogs last year. Participants paid $5 per dog to attend one of three sessions throughout the day — 10-11:30 a.m., noon-1:30 p.m. and 2-3:30 p.m. No human swimming was allowed. Admission fees and donations benefit the Parks and Recreation's Family Assistance Program, which helps local low-income families gain access to recreation programs and classes. National Public Health Week 2013 at Oregon State University
The College of Public Health and Human Sciences' Public Health Club hosted the Healthy Community Fair on the Memorial Union quad April 12 as part of the American Public Health Association's National Public Health Week.
All week, the club held a photo contest where students and community members who like the Public Health Club's Facebook page could submit a photo of themselves performing a healthy activity safely.
One of this year's themes for National Public Health Week was doing healthy activities safely and promoting a safe community, says Public Health Club member Nastassia Donoho. We think the photo contest encouraged people to be aware of how you can be healthy easily and active in your community at the same time, that you don't have to drive 30 miles to go hike up a mountain, you could just walk around campus or drink water.
Club members selected the top three photos, and the public voted on their favorite photo during the event. Public Health student Sesha Birns' photo of her practicing a yoga headstand in the wilderness won first place.
Public health-related Oregon State clubs including TEAM OREGON, Type 1 Beavers, and the Public Health and International Health clubs set up booths during the event, as did organizations in the community including Corvallis Parks and Recreation, Heartland Humane Society and VAIN (Valley AIDS Information Network).
