Hiking Palm Canyon East Fork - Palm Springs
We enjoyed last weeks hike, the Andreas and the Murray Canyon trail, so much that we decided to do the Palm Canyon, East Fork Loop this Thursday. This was a 7.5 mile loop hike that took us 3.5 hours to complete. It was 1,100 feet total elevation change and we rated this hike moderate because of a few areas of rock climbing.
We drove up to the Trading Post at the Indian Canyons, Aqua Caliente Indian Reservation. Just before we started our trek we stopped to watch at hummingbirds at several large water feeders. In the above video you will see some really closeup shots of these fearless tiny birds fending for their food against competing bees. We were so amazed that they were not afraid of the bees or getting their pictures taken.
The Palm Canyon hike was just as beautiful as last weeks trek but a lot longer. The trails lead to beautiful desert scenery and it was hard to imagine we were so close to civilization. Watch the above video and enjoy watching hummingbirds and the magnificent fan palms and more.

Box Canyon Trail - Newberry Springs, CA
About 15 miles north east of Lucerne Valley on the northern edge of Johnson Valley OHV Area bordering the Rodman Mountain Area lies a hidden gem called Box Canyon. Some have even named it the Grand Canyon Of The Rodmans for its straight up and down canyon walls that are several hundred feet high in some sections. The walls were created in part of an ancient lava flow that cut through this region thousands of years ago. The canyon host a variety of wildlife as bighorn sheep frequently visit this area including raptors, prairie falcon and even golden eagles. On your way to Box Canyon you'll have the opportunity to stop and see some spectacular petroglyphs in the dark volcanic rocks if you look hard enough as this trail will reward your senses with fun and exciting points of interest. Be aware that temperatures typically exceed 100 plus degrees in the summer months but the high canyon walls of Box Canyon can provide a safe haven of shade during the early morning or later afternoon hours to cool off.

Hike in Indian Canyons - Palm Springs
There's three different canyons you can hike within the Indian Canyons in Palm Springs. I went for the Andreas Canyon, which took me a little over 2 hours to hike, but took me a little longer because I was filming.
It's not the most exciting video but it shows how diverse and beautiful the landscape is there. From little streams and lush, green palm trees to desert, rock and mountain all within a less than a mile.
Thanks to Gregg Wright for putting together some music for me to give the video a little more excitement. For more of Gregg's work check out:

'Super bloom' paints California deserts
(8 Mar 2019) Beautiful wildflowers fed by recent rains are painting Southern California's deserts in a wave of color.
This year's so-called super bloom is shaping up to be among the best ever.
My buddy told me that super bloom was going on, tourist Stephen Rawding said as he wandered around Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. He said it was more beautiful than in 2017 so I came out here with a friend, my girlfriend, and we are checking it out. And it's unreal. It's just like they said. So, beautiful.
The Southern California park is glowing with purple and yellow wildflowers across its 600,000 acres with the blooming of verbenas, desert sunflowers and dune primrose, with even more to come.
Steady rainfall over the past several months in the desert has created the optimal environment for the yearly bloom of flowers, allowing them to flourish even more than previous years.
The views are only expected to get better in the coming weeks as the California poppy comes into full bloom, painting the landscape orange.

Grand Opening of Elena Bulatova Fine Art
Art Expansion: Backstreet's Elena Bulatova Opens a New Space in Downtown
Written by Richard Almada for CV Independent
Thursday, Nov. 21, was a big day for local artist Elena Bulatova: She celebrated the opening of her second gallery, this one in downtown Palm Springs, with a ribbon-cutting featuring Mayor Steve Pougnet.
The celebration continues from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, when Elena Bulatova Fine Art will hold a reception to celebrate the opening.
I first met Elena Bulatova at her Backstreet Art District gallery, at 2652 S. Cherokee Way. I was impressed by her work, her international lifestyle and her world-class education. The first gallery has been a success for Bulatova; she's now in her third season in Palm Springs. Not bad for a relatively new arrival in the desert.
Bulatova credited her parents for exposing her to various art museums during their travels. She honed her skills with seven years in art school; she painted, danced and even played the violin in the chamber orchestra at Moscow State University. She then came to the United States to study economics at Yale.
To be a successful artist, it is not just knowing how to paint, she told me during an email conversation. Running the galleries is separate business that includes managing people, client relations, marketing, social media, contacts with press, accounting, financial planning, etc. Success doesn't come overnight, and many years of studies ... helped me to grow in my career as an artist.
Her art is bright and vivid, often featuring perfect compositions. While she works mostly with primary colors, she also has a series of muted, darker mixed-media works with an iridescent metallic quality. The new Palm Canyon Drive gallery boasts new hand-blown glass pieces, adding a dramatic element to the high ceilings and open space in this unique building across from the Hyatt.
The new gallery will also show carved paintings on panel and bronze sculptures by Delos Van Earl; Larry Weitz's abstract paintings; and screw art by Efraim Mashiah. Starting in January, the gallery will also host monthly exhibitions.
I asked her who was collecting her art.
My paintings can be found in many private collections, locally in California and all over U.S., but we see a lot of international tourists coming from different countries to Palm Springs, she said via email. I shipped paintings to Canada, Mexico, Australia and Europe.
Why did this woman who grew up in Russia choose the desert as the place to make and sell her art? Why not a place like, say, Miami? (In fact, she's taking part in the Red Dot Art Fair in Miami right now, in conjunction with Miami Beach's world-famous Art Basel show.)
I think the desert art scene has a lot of potential, she told me, later adding that Miami has too many distractions compared to the relative serenity of the desert. Palm Springs is very close to Los Angeles, and there are a lot of people visiting. Miami once became a hub for contemporary artists with the coming of Art Basel to the city, which grew in 10 years and attracted numerous satellite fairs and artists to relocate there. We (have) the Palm Springs Fine Art Fair, and its third season is coming. There are already a lot of creative people here—and more coming.
Bulatova said she opened the second gallery because of the growth in the art industry and because of the potential of Palm Springs. She found the new location, took a month to remodel it, and presto: The new gallery came to be.
There is no doubt in my mind that the new gallery will bring much success to Bulatova—and allow more people to experience her wonderful art.
Elena Bulatova Fine Art's new downtown Palm Springs location is located at 232 N. Palm Canyon Drive. The gallery is open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., with extended hours on Thursdays during Palm Springs VillageFest. An opening reception will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 13. California's 'Indescribable' Desert: See Why It's Worth Conservation
Shown here in stunning time-lapse video, the California desert is one of the most indescribable places on our planet, says Mark Butler, a retired National Park Service superintendent. [Protecting these lands] would be profound.
Californians, Americans, and visitors from all over the world have long been drawn to the California desert's painted mountains, fascinating wildlife, Native American petroglyphs, and storied history.
Now we have an historic opportunity to protect special places in the California desert that hold extraordinary historical, cultural, ecological, and economic value. After working for nearly a decade on legislative efforts to protect the California Desert, we are turning to President Obama to designate the Mojave Trails, Sand to Snow, and Castle Mountains National Monuments.
Take action: Urge President Obama to protect the California Desert now:
*Transcript*
President Obama, as a former public servant and a person who's dedicated his life to conservation, I'd like to ask you to establish these three national monuments in the California desert.
What I love about the desert is it's just mesmerizing. It is one of those almost indescribable places on our planet. The skies are just remarkable, broad, clear. The stars are just so amazing at night that you can hardly believe it.
I think that designating [Mojave Trail, Sand to Snow, and Castle Mountains as] national monuments would be profound for the local communities.
In fact, in 2014, nearly three million visitors came to Joshua Tree and Death Valley and they spent more than 160 million dollars in the local communities.
Rain-Soaked Hillsides Move, Collapse In Several Areas
