The San Gimignano towers (Torri di San Gimignano) are located in the medieval town of San Gimignano in the province of Siena, within the Tuscany region of Italy. This small town lies within a walled enclosure atop a hill with multiple gates providing entry to this commune.
San Gimignano holds its fame in Tuscany due to its numerous towers that form a skyline that can be seen for miles from the surrounding towns and countryside. Most of the towers are constructed during the Medieval Age and a lot of Gothic and Romanesque architecture can also be found here.
The town itself, developed from a small Etruscan village into a prospering commune but it was in the 12th century that the town gained its claim to fame. A dispute started between two economically powerful families living in San Gimignano, namely the Guelphs and Ghibellines. As a result of this rivalry, each family built better and higher towers to show its economical stability and power.

San Gimignano, Tuscany, Italy
San Gimignano is a small walled medieval hill town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, Italy.
It is mainly famous for its medieval architecture, especially its towers, which may be seen from several kilometres outside the town.
San Gimignano has managed to conserve fourteen towers of varying height which have become its international symbol.
There are many churches in the town: the two main ones are the Collegiata, formerly a cathedral, and Sant'Agostino, housing a wide representation of artworks from some of the main Italian renaissance artists.
The heart of the town contains the four squares, the Piazza della Cisterna, the Piazza Duomo where the Collegiata is located, the Piazza Pecori and the Piazza delle Erbe. The main streets are Via San Matteo and Via San Giovanni, which cross the city from north to south.

2:50 - The Piazza San Agostino, which contains the Chiesa di Sant'Agostino. It can be found on the northern side of San Gimignano and on the Piazza Sant'Agostino, where it has been an important local landmark since is first opened its doors in the 13th century. The town's second-biggest church after the Collegiata, the simple brick exterior appears quite plain and the bell tower is very subtle. The Chiesa di Sant'Agostino is home to a small chapel, which contains the tower of St. Bartolo.

: Don't miss this walled medieval town with its famous towers in beautiful Tuscany. San Gimignano in Italy is famous for its tower houses, and here, 54 metres up on top of the tallest one, the Torre Grossa, built in 1311, Tony Page gives you a 360 degree panorama of this famous walled medieval hill town in the province of Siena, Tuscany. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site too and a great place to visit.
Okay, here we are in a sort of wet San Gimignano and I'm on top of the tallest tower you can find ... I'm not sure what the name is, it doesn't say on the ticket (Ed: it's called the Torre Grossa)... but I'm looking across at a man who is about to jump. Actually he is one of the nude bronze statues that are stuck on the top and in odd spots all over San Gimignano.
So here we are, that's as wide as I can go, it's pretty wet, so excuse me if the lens gets a bit smeared. Anyway, as you can see, we're quite high up here. I'm just going to do a sweep round and have a look down into one of the main squares. Deserted now because it's wet, but it was packed solid not so long ago, and it really is extremely busy with tourists here.
As you can see, there's not many people in the streets at the moment. I just can't believe the change actually. A few minutes ago it was totally packed. I've just been and done a shot doing what this guy's doing, creating a panorama which hopefully you'll be able to see when I put it together in the gallery.
Now down here -- let me just zoom in a little -- this is one of the other main streets and squares (Ed: it's the Piazza Cisterna) and again you can see there's only one or two solitary souls with umbrellas there. But a few minutes ago, literally 10 minutes ago, it was teeming with people. In fact, I think the secret to San Gimignano is to come and stay here, because in the evening it must quieten down a lot.
Now what we're seeing here is the main street into town and I'll zoom in. This is the street you'll probably walk along when you come into the town. Again there are a few people here, but it was packed solid earlier. I don't know where all those stallholders are, they seem to be very quick at getting all their goods in. Now there's the gate that you'll probably come in at, and I'll come back so that you can actually see the general route you'll be taking.
The countryside's very beautiful here, as you can see.. sort of a dream Tuscan type of area. Unfortunately I can't get you the dream light. As you can see in the distance, there is quite a lot of rain about and normally you can see a lot further than this; I certainly hope that when you come you'll have better weather. I'm actually due back here in a couple of weeks so it's possible there may be better weather then, in which case you may never see this.
Up here, rather like in Orvieto, there are bells, but fortunately they don't seem to ring, after I nearly had heart failure in Orvieto when I climbed to the top and they finally rang just as I stepped out onto the main parapet. I'm not looking forward to it here, these bells are a lot bigger than the ones in Orvieto as you can probably make out.
Let me just duck down here, it's sort of an obstacle course, you have to get under here (groan) to come out on the other side and have another go. Okay, sorry about that, nothing like a little bit of adventure. So here again it's wet, but you'll see the village is surrounded by quite attractive countryside.
Oops, I can see there's a chunk of water on the lens there, sorry about that but there we are. It is getting rather wet here so I think I may just call it a day and retreat back down the 205 steps I believe there are here as opposed to 238 in Orvieto and get down to ground level. See you soon!

SAN GIMIGNANO: Medieval Walled City in Tuscany (With Torture Museum)
San Gimignano, also known as the Town of Fine Towers, is a well-preserved medieval walled city in Tuscany, Italy. About a dozen of the original 72 towers still exist. Two competing families kept building tower houses at greater heights until the local town council put a stop to it. One interesting aspect of this town is that there are two Torture Museums, one of which I visited.

Medieval towers nearly 700 years old pierce the sky of the Tuscan village of San Gimignano in northern Italy. From the moment you walk inside through a gateway in the old wall you feel magically transported into another time and place. Sometimes called a medieval Manhattan because of its ancient skyscrapers. The highest tower reaches 170 feet, and you can climb to the top of several of these towers. From there of course you get a splendid view of the old town and the beautiful countryside around it. We'll take you on a walk through the main lanes and little side alleys. It doesn't take very long – the village is so small it's just 700 meters from north to south, and about 350 meters from east to west, so you could walk it from top to bottom in 20 minutes, and yet there are many wonderful things to see. This proud resident of town likes to come out and walk her dog, show off this pretty little terrier, and draws a crowd because this dog has got some charisma. So often when you're traveling and visiting these historic sites it's the little surprises, the local touches that mean just as much or more than the history – always fun to run into these little unexpected bonuses. The tall gateway is the Arch of Becci that was formerly an entrance to the old medieval town, but then the town grew little bigger, they expanded the walls, and this arch became a passageway from the main lane into the central square of the Piazza della Cisterna.

San Gimignano is a small walled medieval hill town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, north-central Italy. Known as the Town of Fine Towers, San Gimignano is famous for its medieval architecture, unique in the preservation of about a dozen of its tower houses, which, with its hilltop setting and encircling walls form an unforgettable skyline. Within the walls, the well-preserved buildings include notable examples of both Romanesque and Gothic architecture, with outstanding examples of secular buildings as well as churches. The Palazzo Comunale, the Collegiate Church and Church of Sant' Agostino contain frescos, including cycles dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. The Historic Centre of San Gimignano, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town also is known for the white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, produced from the ancient variety of Vernaccia grape which is grown on the sandstone hillsides of the area.

San Gimignano is an Italian hill town in Tuscany, southwest of Florence. Encircled by 13th-century walls, its old town centers on Piazza della Cisterna, a triangular square lined with medieval houses. It has a skyline of medieval towers, including the stone Torre Grossa. The Duomo di San Gimignano is a 12th-century church with frescoes by Ghirlandaio in its Santa Fina Chapel.
As you crest the nearby hills, the 14 towers of the walled town of San Gimignano rise up like a medieval Manhattan. Originally an Etruscan village, the settlement was named after the bishop of Modena, San Gimignano, who is said to have saved the city from Attila the Hun. It became a comune (local government) in 1199, prospering in part because of its location on the Via Francigena. Building a tower taller than their neighbours' (there were originally 72) became a popular way for prominent families to flaunt their power and wealth.
In 1348 plague wiped out much of the population and weakened the local economy, leading to the town's submission to Florence in 1353. Today, not even the plague would deter the swarms of summer day trippers, who are lured by a palpable sense of history, intact medieval streetscapes and enchanting rural setting.
San Gimignano is a pretty medieval walled city in Tuscany, Italy, famous for its beautiful towers and great art. It is small enough to be effectively visited as a day trip from nearby cities like Siena and Florence, but it has a different atmosphere at night that many travelers find it worthwhile to experience.

The Collegiata, the nearest to a duomo (cathedral) in this small city.
The Pinacoteca Civica (civic painting gallery/museum) in the Palazzo Pubblico is small but has beautiful art inside. Torre Grossa, is the tallest tower in the city at 200 feet. Porta San Giovanni is a gate at the southern end of the town's 13th century walls. The church of Sant'Agostino in the northeastern part of the city contains a set of great frescoes on the life of St. Augustine by Benozzo Gozzoli, & friendly, English-speaking friars to tell you about the church.

The Piazza della Cisterna, a beautiful piazza with an old stone well (no longer used) in the middle. This is where a Thursday market gathers. On foot - it's very small, and you must disembark from your car or bus outside the city walls, in any case.
