Santa Ana River Trail (SART) part1 | San Bernadino National Forest
One of the most treasured gems of the SoCal trail scene, the upper section of the Santa Ana River Trail delivers a consistent intermediate experience across its 13.5 miles. Oh, and its wicked fun too.
Update: I state in this video that an Adventure Pass is needed to avoid getting a ticket at South Fork. An intrepid viewer brought to my attention that this may no longer be true due to a recent legal case. I received my info from a ranger and other riders and haven't been able to verify whether it is safe to park there without a pass or not. So, if you bought a pass on my advice and it turns out that you didn't need one, I apologize for the bad advice and I owe you a shuttle ride. :)

Santa Ana River Trail Homeless Camp Eviction Notice
It certainly does not appear that the homeless living along the Santa Ana riverbed are being forced to leave... at least not immediately. I was told by several individuals about a law suit halting the clearing of these encampments. Which is undoubtedly a real thing from what I saw. I also saw a lot of OC Sheriffs who seemed to be simply making a presence and nothing more. There is a lot of unanswered questions here, but I am sure one day the people who reside in these river side encampments will be forced to relocate... but for now they seem pretty content, despite the latest news about The Eviction.

Welcome to America's S***hole: Orange County California Edition Santa Ana River Trail
Please hit 'like and subscribe. Welcome to the new Amerika Sanctuary State, California declared on January 1, 2018. Orange County is a beautiful place. But on the Santa Ana River Trail, miles of tent cities from Anaheim towards Huntington Beach in Orange County, California. While these folks deserve compassion, and help, is this tent city stretching for miles the answer---meanwhile the USA military is around the world in third world countries bringing Democracy ? Video footage of a homeless encampment in Orange County, California, has gone ultra-viral after a Facebook page operated by former law enforcement posted stunning scenes of the sanctuary state’s rapid descent into a dystopian “s***hole.”
Retired Orange County Deputy Sheriffs released the video on Facebook, where it racked up nearly five million views and 104,000 shares in little more than a day.
In the caption, the page’s administrators placed blame for the shocking breakdown of law and order on Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Sandra Hutchens and Undersheriff Don Barnes, with a tongue-in-cheek reference to controversial – yet unsubstantiated – “s***hole” comments attributed to President Donald Trump.
“Orange County is now a shit hole country thanks to Sheriff Sandra Hutchins and her co-conspirator Don Barnes,” they wrote. “Please watch 10 minutes of filth.

The video was taken by cyclists on the popular Santa Ana River Trail – a bike path that runs from Angel Stadium in Anaheim to the Pacific Ocean in Huntington Beach. In the span of just a few short years, sections of the trail have transformed from idyllic, family-friendly recreational terrain, to a dangerous causeway commandeered by vagrants, drug addicts and illegal aliens.
The slum stretches for a considerable distance, abutting upper-scale apartment complexes, multiple professional sporting venues, private businesses, and even a children’s playground. Squatters’ garbage and personal effects are strewn along and across the pathway, and derelicts in various states of undress and consciousness can be seen walking or lying about.
At least one altercation between a man and woman is captured in the clip.
In addition to the video, the Deputy Sheriffs page added photos from the trail, including a sign forbidding “camping” and “storing of public property.”
“Why is Sheriff Sandra Hutchins and Don Barnes not enforcing these misdemeanor codes?” they ask in the caption.
Santa Ana River Between Riverside and Jurupa Valley California
This is the view off Mission Boulevard looking north towards the California route 60 freeway. Along the east side of the river runs the Santa Ana River Trail and Fairmont Park. This river is the largest river in Southern California, believe it or not, and drains four counties. It is born in the San Bernardino Mountains, and runs 154 kilometers into the Pacific Ocean. People have lived along this river for over 9000 years. It was discovered by the Spanish Conquerers in 1769 and named by Spanish Frailes(Mission Priests). The boca or mouth of the river was actually first seen by Spanish Conquerer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542, and the original name given was Rio De Santa Anna, later changed to it's current name after the Anglo American invasion in the 1840s.

The Story of the Santa Ana Watershed
The Santa Ana Watershed catches stormwater from a 2,650 square mile region and channels it into the Pacific Ocean at the City of Huntington Beach. It stretches from the peaks of the San Bernardino and San Gabriel Mountains, through the coastal plains in Orange County all the way to the Pacific Ocean. The Santa Ana River (River), flowing over 100 miles, drains the largest coastal stream system in Southern California including parts of Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, as well as a sliver of Los Angeles County. The total length of the River and its major tributaries is about 700 miles, one of the largest River systems in California. This is The Story of The Santa Ana Watershed.

South Fork Campground in California
Due to winter storms most of the mountain roads were still closed so there was no access to many of the free campsites available. South Fork Campground was still open and at 4500 feet so it was worth trying out.
It turns out the campground is a zoo on the weekends but on weekdays it is incredibly peaceful and has easy access to Palmdale and offers many hiking trails. It is totally worth coming for a place to stay. That stream is also fantastic for cleaning off!

Walking tour of Santa Ana River Trail in Huntington Beach
The Santa Ana River Trail is a 12-foot wide 50.3 mile path following the Santa Ana River, a waterway that is cement-lined through much of Orange County but free flowing in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The popular trail, currently open in two disconnected segments, links inland neighborhoods, businesses and shopping districts with the beach.
In Orange County, the trail begins at a junction with the Huntington Beach Bicycle Trail, providing direct access to the city's two state beaches and busy municipal beach and pier. Extending north, the trail skirts the edge of Costa Mesa and Fountain Valley before emerging into an industrial section of Santa Ana.
The City of Orange is next, where you'll begin to see the gigantic A marking the stadium of Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, situated directly across the Santa Ana River from Orange. Professional sports fanatics will be pleased with this stretch, as the next landmark is the home arena of the National Hockey League's Anaheim Ducks.
Continuing into Anaheim, the river and trail turn east. Views of both the Chino Hills and the increasingly meandering river make this stretch of the trail particularly scenic. The trail itself becomes slightly hillier here—a challenge for those coming all the way from Huntington Beach. In the far western reaches of Corona (just beyond Yorba Linda), the heretofore continuous trail ends, just south of the Green River Golf Club on Green River Road.
A significant gap exists between this endpoint and the resumption of the trail at the Hidden Valley Wildlife Area east of Norco, so the second segment is best tackled in a separate trip. From Hidden Valley, the trail continues east through both industrial and residential sections of Riverside, with scenic views of the Santa Ana River never far away.
The next city is Colton, the entrance point to San Bernardino County. Vistas of the dry river are punctuated by the busy train tracks and active industrial properties clustered around the river along this stretch. The trail currently ends at S. Waterman Avenue, shortly after it crosses the San Bernardino city line.
Plans call for the trail to eventually run for 110 uninterrupted miles all the way from Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains to the Pacific Coast in Huntington Beach, with the gap in the trail from Corona to Norco a significant priority.

Santa Ana Mountain Gold Mine
A lost, but now recently discovered gold mine in Orange County. Its rumored that Mexican Americans excavated a lot of gold, and possibly left behind artifacts during the 19th century. Americans from San Juan followed creating smaller mines further down the canyon. This mine, however, is very far off the beaten path and has been lost in history. It's very possible the rumors are true, and this mine could be evidence of very early gold mining in Orange County.
