Modern furniture classics celebrated

Local and international designers are showcasing their works at Brussels Design September.
The design festival boasts over a hundred events throughout the month of September dedicated to both to commercial pieces and new trends such as the marriage between art and design.
STORYLINE
Nature bursts into Brussels' Victor Horta museum, the Belgian master, who helped popularize the Art Nouveau style around Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Nature of Things II is a contemporary collection of vases and pieces of furniture resulting from the union of unlikely materials such as waste flowers and resin.
The exhibit's creator is Polish artist and designer, Marcin Rusak; he's showcasing his pieces as part of the Brussels Design September festival.
The month-long showcase is entirely dedicated to Belgian and international design, with 135 events throughout the Belgian capital, including exhibits, conferences, markets and lectures.
Rusak's exhibit is a treasure inside a treasure.
It offers a modern-day take on the Art Nouveau style of which Horta was a pioneer.
Art Nouveau became popular in the late 1800's with its elegant forms inspired by the natural world.
The movement celebrated nature and placed it inside upper and middle class homes, borrowing shapes from flowers, foliage and trees.
Similarly, Rusaks' vases, closet, lamps, seats, bookshelves are all naturally decorated with wilting flowers and foliage encased into each piece with a special technique.
Thanks to this process, leaves, waste flowers, resin, beeswax, shellac, flour and metals are combined together and give life to unique pieces of furnishing.
There's a clear inspiration that links Horta's to his own work, says Rusak.
I think nature is the starting point for everything, I think both it was for Horta and it is for me in complete different senses, but we all meet in the natural level of the work, the Polish designer says.
I mostly work with natural materials - that's the first link – but I also use applied arts to use my research, to talk about objects in a different way. So it's grounded in Art Nouveau but I think I want to talk about the future of objects, the consumption of objects, the planned obsolescence (becoming outdated) of objects. So I think the links are obvious in a material level and the subject as well, but I try to speak about the future scenarios of objects, the artist explains.
Rusak applies a thermo-coating technology to metallize discarded leaves with zinc, thus preserving his organic materials.
Similarly, Rusak's vases, seats and bookshelves made of resins, clay, lacquers and even rice glue are veined- like marble - with flowers and foliage encased inside the pieces.
As organic materials, the flowers and leaves are bound to decay and change, subverting the very nature of these artworks as time goes by and humidity sets in.
It's becoming increasingly common for contemporary designers like Rusak to cross into the world of art and enter museums, says Brussels Design September Art Director, Roel Rijssenbeek.
More and more designers aim to individually showcase their works at their own studio or private space rather than look for a company to reproduce their pieces in series, Rijssenbeek adds.
The Design September director was speaking at the Diito gallery in Brussels dedicated to both contemporary and vintage design, exhibiting pieces from Belgium, France and Canadian-German company Bocci.

Andrew Logan: The Artistic Adventure
Andrew Logan’s work spans the fields of sculpture, theater, pageants, jewelry, and interior design. As a scene-maker Logan is the mastermind behind London’s long-running Alternative Miss World pageant. A celebration of transformation, creative free-reign, and the ordinary turned extraordinary, the pageant features a countercultural parade of freaks, fops, show offs, and drag queens. From his early fame amongst London’s fashionable and artistic crowd, who have variously dubbed him ‘Faberge for the millennium’, ‘The Wizard of Odd’, and ‘mirror of our times’, he has become an influential artist of international stature. The Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture in Wales is the only European museum dedicated to a living artist. Brian Eno said: “His work takes the risk of being completely clear in its intentions, doesn’t obscure itself in artspeak, and is unashamedly beautiful. […] He is also a ‘scene-maker’ — one of those rare people with the ability to bring out in others their sense of creativity and curiosity.”

The Third Industrial Revolution: A Radical New Sharing Economy
The global economy is in crisis. The exponential exhaustion of natural resources, declining productivity, slow growth, rising unemployment, and steep inequality, forces us to rethink our economic models. Where do we go from here? In this feature-length documentary, social and economic theorist Jeremy Rifkin lays out a road map to usher in a new economic system.
A Third Industrial Revolution is unfolding with the convergence of three pivotal technologies: an ultra-fast 5G communication internet, a renewable energy internet, and a driverless mobility internet, all connected to the Internet of Things embedded across society and the environment.
This 21st century smart digital infrastructure is giving rise to a radical new sharing economy that is transforming the way we manage, power and move economic life. But with climate change now ravaging the planet, it needs to happen fast. Change of this magnitude requires political will and a profound ideological shift.

SUMMARY
=======
Romantic nationalism (also national romanticism, organic nationalism, identity nationalism) is the form of nationalism in which the state derives its political legitimacy as an organic consequence of the unity of those it governs. This includes, depending on the particular manner of practice, the language, race, culture, religion, and customs of the nation in its primal sense of those who were born within its culture. This form of nationalism arose in reaction to dynastic or imperial hegemony, which assessed the legitimacy of the state from the top down, emanating from a monarch or other authority, which justified its existence. Such downward-radiating power might ultimately derive from a god or gods
(see the divine right of kings and the Mandate of Heaven).
Among the key themes of Romanticism, and its most enduring legacy, the cultural assertions of romantic nationalism have also been central in post-Enlightenment art and political philosophy. From its earliest stirrings, with their focus on the development of national languages and folklore, and the spiritual value of local customs and traditions, to the movements that would redraw the map of Europe and lead to calls for self-determination of nationalities, nationalism was one of the key issues in Romanticism, determining its roles, expressions and meanings.
Historically in Europe, the watershed year for romantic nationalism was 1848, when a revolutionary wave spread across the continent; numerous nationalistic revolutions occurred in various fragmented regions (such as Italy) or multinational states (such as the Austrian Empire). While initially the revolutions fell to reactionary forces and the old order was quickly re-established, the many revolutions would mark the first step towards liberalization and the formation of modern nation states across much of Europe.
