from Wikipedia: Towering forests of Ponderosa pines, snowy Cascade Mountains, pristine rivers, lakes and streams, sun drenched days and star-filled western nights - this is the special beauty of SISTERS, Oregon. Sisters, elevation 3,100 feet, is located in western Deschutes County, just east of the Cascade Mountains in central Oregon. Once a lumber producing town, Sisters is now known as the Gateway to the Cascades. The downtown area has been transformed, and today Sisters is recognized as a unique place to shop with its many specialty stores and galleries.
BEND is located on the eastern edge of the Cascade Range along the Deschutes River. Here the Ponderosa Pine forest transitions into the Great Basin high desert plateau, characterized by arid land, junipers, sagebrush, and bitter-brush. Originally a crossing point on the river, settlement began in the early 1900s. Bend was incorporated as a city in 1905. Economically, it started as a logging town but is now identified as a gateway for many outdoor sports, including mountain biking, fishing, hiking, camping, rock climbing, white-water rafting, skiing, and golf.

Over the last few decades, the Roman Catholic Church in America has struggled to fill the ranks of its clergy. The average age of the church's serving priests and nuns is 70 and rising. But some Catholic orders in the United States are successfully attracting new members or postulants. Reporter Mike Osborne visited an order of Dominican sisters in the southern state of Tennessee where nearly a third of the sisters are under 30 years of age.

Monastic Life in the Middle of Brooklyn
Celebrating the legacy of monastic life in the middle of Brooklyn for 125 years, this short video shows contemporary scenes of the Monastery of the Precious Blood and Retreat House in Borough Park.
The Sister Adorers of the Precious Blood established their first cloister in Brooklyn in 1890, and moved to the completed monastery on Fort Hamilton Parkway in 1910.
Today, our contemplative sisters of the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará (Religious Family of the Incarnate Word) also live in the monastery. Their Monastery of St. Edith Stein was established in Brooklyn in 1998 in Flatlands, and the community was invited to the Precious Blood Monastery in 2011.
Scenes include the outside of the monastery, the main church, and the cloistered half of the church.
(2:02) There are also scenes of the parlor where sisters can meet with guests and offer liturgical vestments, rosaries, holy cards, scapulars, parish banners and other commissioned work are also made by the sisters to support their way of life and to pray for those who will use these items.
(2:37) Additionally, the film shows scenes of daily life in the monastery, the cloister, and the enclosed garden where sisters grow vegetables, pray, and enjoy time together outdoors.
(4:49) There are also scenes of the Retreat House which hosts groups and individuals for periods of retreat and prayer.

The town is known as the first permanent United States settlement on the Pacific coast. With its beautiful Victorian houses perched on the steep hills overlooking the dangerous Columbia River, it has tons to offer. There are plenty of vintage cafes and stores, including, Astoria Vintage Hardware, with the largest Operation Game in the world! Did you know the Goonies, Kindergarten Cop, Free Willy I & II, & Short Circuit were filmed here? You can stop by the Oregon Film Museum and learn all about it. Astoria has 5 museums, so take your pick or visit all five. One of our favorites was the Columbia River Maritime Museum, where we learned just how dangerous the the Columbia River is to ship captains due to its location at Astoria where it meets the Pacific Ocean. It is known as the Graveyard of the Pacific!! If you want to see it for yourself, make the short journey up to the Astoria Column which sets 600 ft above the south bank of the river. And once you've finished exploring, and heading out of town, don't forget to stop and see the sea lions along the river.

Natural wonders - Alvord Desert (Oregon)
The Alvord Desert is a desert located in Harney County, in southeastern Oregon in the western United States. It is roughly southeast of Steens Mountain. The Alvord Desert is a 19 by 11 km dry lake bed and averages 180 mm of rain a year. Two mountain ranges separate it from the Pacific Ocean—the Coast Range, and the Cascade Mountains. Along with Steens Mountain, these topographical features create a rain shadow. The Alvord Desert lies at an elevation of approximately 1,200 m.
