Tam McArthur Rim in Central Oregon
This is Tam McArthur Rim, south of Sisters, Oregon on 11-3-2007. I know this was carved out by glaciers, but beyond that don't know.
Broken top to Green Lakes in the Three Sisters Wilderness.
A great August hike in Central Oregon with my best friend and wife Sharon. Started out from the Broken Top trail head... crappy road for sure! Then hiked to Green Lakes and back. Great trail and views.
Boken Top loop 2010
Broken Top Loop recap and info. (Starring Digity Dan & DFC)
1. Park at Three Creeks lake and head counter clockwise West towards Camp meadow (the trail is sketchy for this part but easy enough with a map).
2.Head NW to Green lakes with a stop at Golden lake ( no official trail to golden lake, watch for cairns marking a semi obvious trail 1.5 - 2 miles roughly from Camp meadow)
3. Head SE from Green lakes towards the Broken Top trail head. A creek just before Ball butte will have an unofficial yet obvious trail heading NW up to the Glacier lake at Broken Top.
4. Climb out of the bowl NW to the top of the ridge follow the ridge east past Broken Hand to the right or south. Some of the loose rocks overhead might be a little scary so you may also pass to the left or north of Broken Hand.
5. Follow the ridge line to the Tam McAurthur rim trail and take that trail back to the trail head at Three Creeks lake and your car.
This is not meant to be a guide just an outline of our hike. For an official guidebook I recommend Douglas Lorains 100 Classic hikes in Oregon which features this trail.

Two days - Two Zones || Three Sisters Wilderness || Oregon || November 29th and 30th, 2014
The last two days of November I went skiing with friends at two of my favorite backcountry zones. One zone offers fun gladed tree skiing with cliff drops and chutes. Perfect for those stormy days. The second zone is an alpine volcanic wonderland that is deep in the Central Oregon Cascades. Long approaches, but rewarded with steep and challenging skiing!
Black Crater Hike September 2nd, 2014
Short day hike to the summit of Black Crater near Sisters Oregon. The trailhead for Black Crater is located approximately 12 miles west of Sisters on Highway 242 (McKenzie Hwy).
According to my GPS the trail is about 3.7 miles (to summit) gaining 2,350 feet of elevation. The trail is steep from the start but the views up there make it a must see. Hope you enjoy my short video.
Sunny Evening At Steelhead Falls
On April 19, 2018 my friend Randi from the blog Now Hike This came to visit me in Bend and we went on a short afternoon hike after her long drive. Steelhead Falls is not like the usual waterfall hikes that we visit over on the west side of the cascades, but it is absolutely gorgeous located in a river canyon with lots of rock formations to explore. We were told this was a loop hike but couldn't figure out how to make it one because there are no maps or signage at the trailhead or throughout the hike. There are some awesome monolith rock formations that are a must-see if you head up the canyon and away from the river, and from up there you can see across the river canyon to some of the local buttes in the area.

Willamette Valley Outdoors - Green Lakes - August 31 - September 1, 2013
A very enjoyable backpacking trip with good friends from Willamette Valley Outdoors. We hiked in 4.4 miles along the Fall Creek Trail, and set up camp in the shadows of South Sister. We took a dip in the lake for awhile, then hiked around the larger lake. Shared so many laughs, and good food. Fell asleep watching the stars. Hiked out the next morning for about 8.2 miles along the Soda Creek Trail.

South Sister Summit Hike @ Three Sisters Wilderness Area, OR 091914
After 25 years or so of contemplation after seeing book on this hike, I finally did it! It did kick my ass, that is, it was steep with loose volcanic rocks and cinders. It was not too warm out, the sky a bit hazey with the fires going on in Oregon and Northern Califonia, but a nice climate for this hike on that day. It was worth the wait!

This is a short version, the full movie is on my YouTube channel. I return to the Three Sisters Wilderness to attempt a hike around the mountains. It is a late season adventure and on the first day I hike to Spring Lake just below Sims Butte. It's a little bit out of the way but I have always wanted to see what's at the end of the mysterious trail. To my minimal dismay there is a 200 foot drop down to the lake, my thought is that I will have to climb up this first thing in the morning. I get camp set just as the light fades, there are three springs feeding the lake providing excellent drinking water. I notice there are many cat tracks in the sand at the lake's edge so I get a small campfire going. In the morning it is snowing and it's a chore keeping things dry. I make an error and overdress for the climb out of the lake basin. Since then I have learned to under dress for the beginning of a cold hike, even though it's not what your body is telling you do. I get sweaty and soon I am experiencing hypothermia. At White Branch Creek, after the Jerry Lava Flow, I angle up into the forest in desperation to set up my tent to warm up. I spent an hour in my sleeping bag, my toes and hands still numb, to no avail. It was the first time I had to start a fire to warm up, I was miserable until then and it is my salvation. The snowfall was the beginning of a cold front. These events change my plans for hiking around the mountains, I decide to stay close to the trailhead if I need to bailout. During this day my spirits are lifted by visiting Gray Jays, otherwise known as Camp Robbers. They eat olive bread from my hand and even land on my head for a piece. I am camped between a couple of very old trees and at night while reading I have an owl visit me. I believe it was upset at my presence and started warbling and chirping while it hopped up and down the tree just above my tent. I could hear it's talons grasping the tree bark, it was eerie. I shined my light up to try and see it but could not, it remained there for quite a while. Finally warmed up I sleep well. The next morning I find that the creek has frozen and I have to break through ice to get water. After coffee and breakfast I can hear a trickle of water up the slope. Slowly from above, the creek starting to flow, melting the ice on it's way down. It was a pretty amazing night and morning. I pack up camp and I climb the up the creek to it's origin, I see a trickle falling from a small plateau. The weather is shaping up nicely and I decide to explore the shelf high above the Pacific Crest Trail. It is posted off limits to campers but I take the chance that there will be no rangers up here so late in the season. I hear that the fines are hefty, but you know, the forest service screwed up by letting this place go to ruins by letting pack animals and equestrians have their way here. I feel that my low impact camping will have no effect here. To my surprise I find two small tarns up here and later find that one is called Arrowhead Lake. From this precipice I can see a line of distant volcanoes: Mt. Washington, Three Fingered Jack and Mt. Jefferson. And below I can see the Pacific Crest Trail twisting through the reflecting obsidian shards. Expectantly I wait for the full moon to rise from behind the Middle Sister and in the dark I get some really sweet photos. I return to the trailhead the next day and head home.
