Brussels, Belgium - Smurf Statue (2018)
The City of Brussels is the largest municipality and historical centre of the Brussels-Capital Region, and the de jure capital of Belgium. Besides the strict centre, it also covers the immediate northern outskirts where it borders municipalities in Flanders. It is the administrative centre of the European Union, thus often dubbed, along with the region, the EU's capital city.
The City of Brussels is a municipality consisting of the central historic town and certain additional areas within the greater Brussels-Capital Region, namely Haren, Laeken and Neder-Over-Heembeek to the north, and Avenue Louise/Louizalaan and the Bois de la Cambre/Ter Kamerenbos park to the south.
On 1 January 2017, the City of Brussels had a total population of 176,545. The total area is 32.61 km2 (12.59 sq mi) which gives a population density of 5,475 inhabitants per square kilometre (14,180/sq mi). As of 2007, there were approximately 50,000 registered non-Belgians in the City of Brussels. In common with all the Brussels municipalities, it is legally bilingual (French–Dutch).

A look around the Smurf Store, located in Brussels, Belgium (in it's true place at home)!
This mostly covers all merchandise, though it's not necessarily the greatest video in terms of quality at time. Basically, if it's on their Facebook page, there's no guarantee it will be in stock at all. It's a tiny shop, but really does have some amazing items within! But as this is Europe, US peeps may find it a tad on the expensive side.

The Smurf Experience will run through January 2019.

BELGIUM: BRUSSELS: COUNTERFEIT SMURFS SEIZED BY CUSTOM OFFICIALS
French/Nat
Smurf Wars have broken out in Belgium - the home of the cartoon blue gnomes - after customs officials seized thousands of counterfeits exported from China.
Now customs chiefs have pledged to destroy the lot.
Belgium may well be the home of the cartoon blue gnomes but none of these were made here. They are all fakes from China where they are produced at a fraction of the cost.
Customs officials intercepted the Smurfs in Antwerp as they were being unloaded in preparation for transport to France.
Altogether some 40-thousand were seized.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
We have discovered four containers with approximately 40-thousand Smurfs. That represents a total weight of 40 tons. The problem is that the smurfs are counterfeits and break the copyright law. We have informed the Justice Department which captured the goods.
SUPER CAPTION: Customs officer Vincent Van Immerzeel
Customs officials say they will all be destroyed.
SOUNDBITE:
The smurfs will be destroyed soon.

Next time Chinese exporters may well avoid the birthplace of the Smurfs when they transport fakes to Europe.

BRUSSELS • Belgium is celebrating the 60th birthday of the Smurfs by giving fans a chance to experience living in their village and take a virtual-reality ride through mystical forests and caves. Cartoonist Pierre Culliford, who used the pseudonym Peyo, struck gold with the incidental creation of the Smurfs in 1958, as he initially had invented them only as supporting characters in his comic of mediaeval heroes Johan and Peewit. After a demand for more Smurf adventures arose, the Belgian put the...

Smurfs celebrate 60th birthday
(23 Oct 2018) LEADIN:
Belgium is celebrating the 60th anniversary of blue cartoon creatures, the Smurfs this year.
Fans are being given the chance to explore a new, interactive show in Brussels. The Smurf Experience takes visitors on a journey into the lives of the unique, small characters and their enchanted world.
STORYLINE:
Veronique Culliford, daughter of Smurfs creator Pierre Culliford, is attending celebration to mark the 60th anniversary of the Smurfs.
Cutting a slice of birthday cake, blue ... obviously.
The Smurfs were first introduced as comic book characters in 1958, created by Culliford, who used the pseudonym Peyo.
Celebrations are being held at The Smurf Experience interactive exhibit in Brussels.
The interactive show is spread over 1,500 square-meters (1,600 square feet).
The exhibit boasts nine rooms, including the Smurfs' village, a cage where evil sorcerer Gargamel wants to imprison them, as well as an array of sound and video presentations.
The true attraction, however, is the chance to get to the Smurfs' eye level.
The Smurf Experience is the creation of Spanish set designer and story-teller, Marcos Vinals Bassols.
The idea was to become (as) small as a Smurf and to live an adventure in the size of a Smurf, he says.
So, our concept is that Smurfs are 1.2 meters high (47 inches) as an average kid, I would say, and all the scenical (stage) elements and props and sets are designed in that size.
The Smurfs dwell in mushroom-like homes and are said to stand only three apples high.
Their stories center around their adventures against evil wizard Gargamel, who obsesses over capturing them and destroying their village.
Chloé Beaufays, Smurf Experience communication manager and spokesperson, calls the show a full immersion into the universe of the Smurfs.
We enter a forest and we're immediately immersed into the Smurfs' magic universe, she says.
At the beginning the forest is a real size, with real size decorations; but little by little, as we move forward, we shrink to the size of a Smurf; that means as tall as three apples.
As visitors walk through the exhibit, the Smurfs' village and its characters increase in size, making visitors feel smaller and smaller.
Video animations, loud sound effects, audio guides and a virtual reality tour all help visitors plunge into the Smurfs' universe.
We discover the Smurfs, we discover their customs, their village, their way of life, how they communicate, explains Beaufays.
In 2017, the Smurfs became UN ambassadors for people and the environment.
Organizers say the show doubles as an educational tool; raising awareness about climate issues by enrolling kids to save the Smurfs' village from environmental destruction.
And then, most importantly, we're tasked with a mission, that is destroying the infernal machine that's being built by Gargamel and that would cause great damage to the climate, says Beaufays.
Going from room to room of the The Smurf Experience proves a real whirlwind journey, says Vinals Bassols.
I think the main room is the village because it is the biggest expectation of the kids and of the audiences, he says.
And it was very important for us that when audiences enter the village they're just there, there.
So that was really important for us and we tried to enhance that experiment allowing to see what was happening inside the Smurfette house, enter a house and do other things. But the other rooms are exciting too, says Vinals Bassols.
