Tips for a visit to the Gateway Arch Saint Louis Mo: Christian goes on the Oregon Trail
Tips for a visit to the Gateway Arch Saint Louis Mo: We travel the Oregon Trail
This is our favorite city and Christian invites you to come and visit sometime!
We went to Saint Louis for the day and was not let down in our expectation of what it had to offer. The Arch museum was exciting and interactive. It was fun for all ages. It is free to explore the museum; however the arch ride it not free.
The new entrance was from the front of the arch and the exits were on the side of the river. They also have a water feature in the front of the arch-where you would walk in.
New security has been put in for everyone's safety. Parking is on the city street or public parking in the area.
For this sensory seeker the walk from the river front and the excitement of the train, walkway, water, and sights, sounds, and smells were enough to keep him busy and interested in what was going to happen next. He also tried out the scooters Saint Louis offers with an easy to download app by Lime or Bird.
Once at the Gateway Arch he had to touch the side, measure himself to the arch, and interact with the people visiting. Everyone was pleasant and engaged in simple conversations with him quickly and easily. He had a wonderful time inside the museum where again it was interactive and full of surprises.
Tips for this visit would be to park on the city side and not Morgan street as the entrance is now on the City side and not the river front side of the arch. The area has a large park which is nice for walks, scooters, and biking. The area is active and vibrant which can be over stimulating if your child has avoidance or anxiety. The fountain in the front of the Arch is large and you could get splashed if not careful. Inside you will be searched and guided to the exhibits. The line for the tram up the arch is always long so keep that in mind if you have younger children or older adults who need to rest. The exhibits are circular, sometimes noisy, and busy so keeping up with busy children is a bit challenging. The area has plenty of staff, guards, and park rangers so no fear a child will be stolen or lost. All in all it was a great experience and we would recommend it to anyone-everyone.
per the website:
Trace the story of the Native Americans, explorers, pioneers, and rebels who made America possible. Featuring 201 years of history within six themed exhibit areas, this innovative and interactive museum celebrates America’s pioneering spirit and explains the westward expansion of the United States with an emphasis on St. Louis’ role in that era. The galleries span from 1764 to 1965 with topics covering the growth and stability of Saint Louis and it's people.
Christian enjoyed the Organ Trail interactive game while pretending to cross the Mississippi with staff who helped him understand what it would be like to leave Saint Louis and take one of the famous trails out west.

UNITED STATES STEEL BUILDING OF THE ST. LOUIS ARCH MONUMENT TO A DREAM 79464
Monument To The Dream is a 1967 short documentary film on the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Arch over the Mississippi River in St. Louis, Missouri. Produced by Guggenheim Productions for United States Steel, the film begins with men making carbon steel plates (00:12) into 15-ton, 2-ply sheets in Pennsylvania. In St. Louis (00:45), a triangular foundation of tons of concrete is formed and set, ready to bear the steel plates. Those plates are loaded onto railcars (01:13) and sent to St. Louis, where they are removed from the train (02:00) and placed so that the welders can weld the sheets together. On 12 February 1963, the first welded steel piece is ready and is placed on the concrete foundation. The 50-ton steel triangles are built and then stacked, creating the foundation of the arch’s legs (04:03). Each section is lined up then the gaps are tack-welded (05:20). By summer, six sections are up, and a platform derrick must be used to complete construction. By the fall of 1963, the scale of the structure is apparent. In 1964, the arch’s legs are nearly 300 feet high. Engineers continue to place steel bars and pour concrete inside the structure (07:26); over 25,000 tons of concrete is used. Come summer, the structure is taller than ever, measuring in at 400 feet. Steel eye-beam tracks are put in position (09:07) and an 80-ton creeper moves up the tracks (10:12). A shot of the partially constructed arch (10:42) shows just how imposing the finished structure will be. Geometry control readings are taken at night (11:00) then compared to computer readings. On 17 June 1965, a 60-ton bridging strut is raised to join the two legs of the arch (11:58). Views from atop the structure, roughly 500 feet above the river and St. Louis, are stunning. Men secure the bridging strut and begin closing the distance between the two legs. Sept In 1965, more than two-and-a-half years since construction began, men ride an elevator 12 minutes, passing capital building (14:11), to reach the top. The creeper and cranes hoist more sections. A triangular piece is hoisted up (15:58). Section-by-section, the gap is closed, and an aerial shot shows the progress made (17:00). On 8 October 1965, the final piece is ready to be lifted up and attached (17:35). Men fight the sun’s heat on the structure by spraying water on it. The legs are jacked apart 4 feet (18:15) to get the space to put in the final piece. A shot from on top of the structure shows the football stadium in the background (18:54). The final piece is lifted (19:00) as people gather at the bottom to celebrate the completion of the arch. The final piece passes the capital building (20:00) and reaches the top (21:23). Men move it into place and secure it, completing the arch (22:29). The film concludes with scenes of arch as the sun sets in the background.

Brawl erupts between Ferguson, MO protesters & police in St Louis City Hall
Click here for daily updates on crimes committed by police:
ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – An altercation broke out at St. Louis City Hall during a meeting Wednesday to discuss the possibility of creating a civilian review board so citizens could have a more direct line to police.
Witnesses told News 4 the fight began when a woman, who was getting ready to leave, was pushed aside by the Business Manager of the St. Louis Police Officers Association, Jeff Roorda. Roorda was addressing 18th Ward Alderman Terry Kennedy at the time of the alleged incident.
A News 4 camera was inside the City Hall room and captured the hectic scene. At the start of the video you can hear St. Louis Police Officer Curtis Burgdorf addressing the committee along with grumblings from the crowd. Seconds later, Roorda asks Alderman Kennedy to bring the crowd to order. When the camera shifts to capture Roorda, he begins walking towards the front of the room when he encounters Cachet Currie, the woman who claims she was pushed. When Roorda and Currie come near one another the scuffle ensues. From News 4’s camera angle it is hard to tell who initiates contact.
I was literally just trying to leave the meeting and I got caught in whatever Roorda and Kennedy had going on in their exchange, said Currie. Roorda just jumped out into the aisle, pushed me over, and tried to get to Kennedy. I'm like 'wait a minute, don't push me.' Then he started going off on me, pushing me. Some man grabbed me by the hair, just started trying to throw punches at me. From there it just went wild.”
Roorda called the hearing a sham that lacked any type of order. He said the anti-police crowd members did not like it when he asked the committee chair to bring the crowd to order.
“As I tried to exit the aisle I was in, the woman was standing in the way,” Roorda said. “She began elbowing me and pushing, trying to keep me from getting out. As I tried to exit, she continued to do that. Two or three other anti-police radicals rushed over and things escalated from there.”
Roorda told News 4 he did not push Currie.
Roorda said he was at the meeting to support police and was exercising his First Amendment rights by wearing an “I am Darren Wilson” bracelet. Roorda says he wants police officers to get the same respect that was given to the other people who spoke at the meeting.
Why go up to the front and show the bracelet off? said protester Rasheen Aldridge. Why go up to the front and sit in front of the protesters where you know they are at, kneel there, and have this bracelet sit there and smile as if its okay. You're being held to a higher standard as the business manager of the police officers' association, so you need to be responsible for what you do. What he did was completely irresponsible, childish, and wrong.
After several minutes of pushing and shoving, the meeting was adjourned early.
You could tell people were on edge and they have very opposing views on a lot of things. if we are not willing to listen to each other then we are not going to get very far, said Maggie Crane, a spokesperson for St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay.
