Gateway Arch Documentary - America's Tallest Monument - National TV
Gateway Arch Documentary - America's Tallest Monument - National TV
The Gateway Arch is a 630-foot (192 m) monolith in St. Louis in the united state state of Missouri. Outfitted in stainless steel as well as constructed in the type of an inverted, heavy catenary arc, it is the world's highest arc, [4] the tallest monument in the Western Hemisphere, as well as Missouri's highest easily accessible structure. Built as a monument to the westward expansion of the Usa, [5] it is the focal point of the Jefferson National Expansion Remembrance and has actually come to be an internationally popular symbol of St. Louis.
The arch sits at the site of St. Louis' starting on the west bank of the Mississippi River.
The Gateway Arch was designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen in 1947; construction began on February 12, 1963, and was completed on October 28, 1965, for $13 million (equivalent to $180 million in 2013). The monument opened to everyone on June 10, 1967.
Saarinen's team included himself as designer, J. Henderson Barr as associate designer, and Dan Kiley as landscape architect, as well as Lily Swann Saarinen as sculptor and Alexander Girard as painter. In the first stage of the competition, Carl Milles recommended Saarinen to change the bases of each leg to triangulars as opposed to squares. Saarinen said that he worked at first with mathematical shapes, but finally adjusted it according to the eye. At submission, Saarinen's plans outlined the arc at 509 feet (155 m) high and 592 feet (180 m) vast from center to center of the triangle bases.
On September 1, 1947, submissions for the first stage were received by the jury. The submissions were classified by numbers only, and the names of the designers were kept anonymous. Upon four days of deliberation, the jury narrowed down the 172 submissions, that included Saarinen's father Eliel, to five finalists, as well as announced the corresponding numbers to the media on September 27. Saarinen's design (# 144) wa
I drove through the WORST parts of East St. Louis, Illinois. This is what I saw.
Wow! This place is completely abandoned and an empty wasteland now!
In our last video, we visited St Louis, Missouri, and right now, we’re going to cross over the Mississippi River and head into Illinois. We’ll take the first exit, Barack Obama Highway, and head deep into East St. Louis, one of the most notoriously rundown and dangerous communities in America.
The day is Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at approximately 11:30 am.
The region has just received several inches of snowfall two days prior, but as you can see, today, the skies are bright. The air was crisp, and the snowfall made the area appear unusually charming, like makeup covering a bruise.
Like other rust belt cities in the midwest, East St Louis was once a bustling community, and at its peak, was home to 82,000 people. However, the economic decline has hit this city hard, and the population now numbers around 27,000, shrinking by more than two thirds.
It was once Illinois’ 4th largest city, and was an All American city as late as 1959. But that was a long time ago - 60 years in fact.
The problem here really began in the 1970s when the middle class moved out of the area, and the resulting failed tax base meant basic city services, including police and fire departments, had trouble operating.
Because of depopulation, East St Louis today has many abandoned properties and extensive urban blight. All over town are sections of urban prairie where vacant buildings were demolished and whole blocks have become overgrown with vegetation. We saw the same thing in Detroit.
We drove by one such home being razed to the ground. You can see it here.
Much of the land outside of the city remains undeveloped, bypassed by developers who chose more affluent suburban areas. That area is now farming. What’s left in city limits proper are widely scattered inner city neighborhoods, truck stops, adult venues, liquor stores and other blighted sections of town.
The racial makeup of East St Louis is 98% black, 1% white, and 1% other.
35% of the city lives below the poverty line, where family incomes average under $25,000 a year.
Crime wise, East St Louis is notorious among the midwest. The per capita homicide rate here is about 18 times the national average, and East St Louis has the highest murder rate of any city in the United States. Kids who grow up here are told to take cover in the bathtub when they hear gunfire. People don’t answer their doors after dark.
However, it was early in the day, and much of the trouble makers here were still indoors, perhaps daunted by the icy roads and cold weather.
We’ll drive through some of the worst sections of East St. Louis now.
East St. Louis wasn’t as bad as we thought it would be. Perhaps some of the blight was masked by the recent snowfall, and it appears as if more and more blighted neighborhoods have been demolished, possibly never to be rebuilt. In terms of dangerous members of the community, it would have been a different case had we driven through these areas at night.
As it stands, we’ve now reached the far northern limits of town, which is where urban blight meets farmland.

The Darkness Haunted House
Scariest Haunted house in America? I don't know that I would go that far..
We strapped on our big girl panties and took a trip into the depths of The Darkness, St Louis' premier haunted attraction in Soulard.
The animatronics were too notch, clearly the leader in the game. The actors were committed to their scares and the length of the haunted house was pretty dang long! And yes, fast pass is worth it. The GA line had to be at LEAST 2 hours!
Enjoy the montage! *trigger warning* THERE'S CLOWNS!

STL Live - 2017 Solar Eclipse
A total solar eclipse is when the moon completely covers the sun and on Monday, August 21, we will witness this once in a lifetime event in St. Louis. This will be first total solar eclipse visible in the United States in 38 years, so we have a few suggestions on the best viewing possible.
The full eclipse will last upwards of 3 hours from beginning to end, but total eclipse is only for 2 minutes 41 seconds, but depending on your location it can be much shorter. Some St. Louis City residents in areas like Tower Grove, The Hill or Bevo will have a view of the eclipse, but if you are located above Interstate 64, you should look for an alternate viewing location to the west or north. For example, St. Clair, Missouri will see the longest total solar eclipse for the full 2 minutes, 40 seconds, but those viewing in Benton Park will see it for only 11 seconds.
To fully view the eclipse you will need protection from the sun’s rays. Check with libraries, museums, schools, astronomy clubs or science centers for eclipse glasses and remember that any eyewear you purchase for yourself should by ISO-123122 compliant. The St. Louis Science Center is currently selling these glasses for an affordable price while supplies last.
There are several viewing parties happening around St. Louis, including at the St. Louis Science Center, where you can enjoy food, fun, demonstrations and during the eclipse, Planetarium educators will describe what is happening.
To find eclipse maps, a list of viewing parties and where to buy protective glasses visit For more information on the St. Louis Science Center’s eclipse events, visit slsc.org.
