Tintagel Castle is a medieval fortification located on the peninsula of Tintagel Island, adjacent to the village of Tintagel in Cornwall, England, UK. The site was possibly occupied in the Romano-British period, as an array of artefacts dating to this period have been found on the peninsula, but as yet no Roman era structure has been proven to have existed there. It subsequently saw settlement during the Early Medieval period, when it was probably one of the seasonal residences of the regional king of Dumnonia. In the 13th century, during the Later Medieval period, after Cornwall had been subsumed into the kingdom of England, a castle was built on the site by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, which later fell into disrepair and ruin. Archaeological investigation into the site began in the 19th century as it became a tourist attraction, with visitors coming to see the ruins of Richard's castle. In the 1930s, excavations revealed significant traces of a much earlier high status settlement, which had trading links with the Mediterranean during the Late Roman period.
The castle has a long association with Arthurian legends. This began in the 12th century when Geoffrey of Monmouth, in his mythical account of British history, the Historia Regum Britanniae, described Tintagel as the place of Arthur's conception. Geoffrey told the story that Arthur's father, King Uther Pendragon, was disguised by Merlin's sorcery to look like Gorlois, Duke of Cornwall, the husband of Igraine, Arthur's mother.
Tintagel Castle has been a tourist destination since the mid-19th century and is now managed by English Heritage.

Geoffrey told the story that Arthur's father, King Uther Pendragon, was disguised by Merlin's sorcery to look like Gorlois, Duke of Cornwall, the husband of Igraine, Arthur's mother.
Tintagel Castle has been a tourist destination since the mid-19th century. Owned by Charles, Prince of Wales as part of the landholdings of the Duchy of Cornwall, the site is currently managed by English Heritage.

From Wikipedia: Tintagel /tɪnˈtædʒəl/ or Trevena (Cornish: Tre war Venydh meaning village on a mountain) is a civil parish and village situated on the Atlantic coast of Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The population of the parish is 1,820 people, and the area of the parish is 4,281 acres (17.32 km2). The parish population decreased to 1,727 at the 2011 census. An electoral ward also exists extending inland to Otterham. The population of this ward at the same census was 3,990.
The village and nearby Tintagel Castle are associated with the legends surrounding King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table. The village has, in recent times, become attractive to day-trippers, and tourists from many parts of the world, and is one of the most-visited places in Britain.

Tintagel Castle
Tintagel Castle is a medieval fortification located on the peninsula of Tintagel Island on the North coast of Cornwall overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
In the Cornish language it is called Dintagel, meaning fort of the constriction.
The site was possibly occupied in the Romano-British period, as an array of artefacts dating to this period have been found on the peninsula, but as yet no Roman era structure has been proven to have existed there.
It would appear that Tintagel was an important trading post from late Roman times until it was abandoned at the end of the 7th century.
Excavations at Tintagel in the 1930s unearthed a wealth about pottery of Mediterranean origin, which contained wine, oil, or was simply used for show.
The presence of so much of this pottery, known now as Tintagel Pottery as it is the largest concentration of such pottery in Britain, and indicates the prosperity of Tintagel in the 5th and 6th centuries, the time of Arthur.
It is assumed that Cornish Tin was used for bartering for goods.
It subsequently saw settlement during the Early Medieval period, when it was probably one of the seasonal residences of the regional king.

A castle was built on the site by Earl Richard in 1233 because it was seen as the traditional place for Cornish kings.
The castle was built in a more old-fashioned style for the time to make it appear more ancient. Richard hoped that in this way he could gain the Cornish people's trust, since they were suspicious of outsiders.
The castle itself held no real strategic value.
After Richard, the following Earls of Cornwall were not interested in the castle, and it was left to the county sheriff.
Parts of the accommodation were used as a prison and the land was let as pasture.
The castle became more dilapidated, and in the 1330s the roof of the Great Hall was removed. Thereafter the castle became more and more ruinous and there was progressive damage from erosion.
In the summer of 1983, a series of bush fires swept across Tintagel island, uncovering buildings which were rectangular, not circular. The ruins showed the site to have been occupied ranging from Roman times in the third century, to the eventual fall of the castle to the Anglo-Saxon invasion.

Archaeologists Unearthed A Vast Palace That Could Be The Birthplace Of Britain’s Most Legendary King

On a windswept cliff top in the far west of England, a team of archaeologists are excavating an ancient settlement. Slowly, a series of massive walls emerge from beneath the ground. An important building clearly existed here at one time or another. But could the discovery add credit to one of history’s most enduring legends?
In July 2016, a team from England’s Cornwall Archaeological Unit arrived in Tintagel, a small village in the county of Cornwall. They were there to embark on a program of excavations due to last three weeks. And eventually, they hoped to demystify some of the legends and rumors surrounding this wild spot on the Atlantic coast.
The excavations were, in fact, part of a larger five-year research project funded by English Heritage, a charity that manages many of England’s historic landmarks. The goal of the project? To shed some light on the origins of the ancient ruins at Tintagel, which were first discovered in the 1930s.
Today, Tintagel is most famous as the alleged birthplace of King Arthur, a legendary king said to have lived in the late 5th and early 6th centuries. According to the stories, King Arthur defended Britain in the face of invading Saxons. And after uniting the country, he allegedly presided over a blissful decade of peace from his castle, Camelot.
According to the legend, King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table defeated many foes and established a mighty empire that stretched as far as France. Moreover, some say the medieval king had magical powers. One famous story goes, for example, that he once pulled the enchanted sword Excalibur from solid rock.
The first mention of King Arthur comes from Geoffrey of Monmouth, a Welsh cleric who put pen to paper in the 12th century. In his History of the Kings of Britain, Geoffrey named Tintagel Castle as the conception place of the mysterious King Arthur. And although many scholars now believe the legendary king to be an amalgamation of historical leaders – rather than one singular real person – Tintagel is still famous the world over.
Understandably, the ruined castle that still stands on a peninsula at Tintagel has boosted this fame. However, the structure dates from the 13th century – far too late to have been a settlement in King Arthur’s time. So was Geoffrey’s Tintagel merely a figment of his imagination?
In the 1930s, the tale took another twist. Courtenay Ralegh Radford, an English historian and archaeologist specializing in the Dark Ages, began an excavation of the site of Tintagel Castle – and there he found evidence of what he believed was a Celtic monastery dating back to the 5th century.
Later archaeologists studying the area around Tintagel Castle have, however, disagreed with this theory. Instead, they believe that the site was a settlement for high-ranking citizens of Dumnonia, the ancient kingdom that covered swathes of South West England from the 4th to the 8th centuries.
