Tumalo Falls - Bend Oregon
In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick, Regan, Maggie and Kate visited Tumalo Falls in the Cascade Mountains outside of Bend, Oregon. (We’re sorry if we mispronounced Tumalo in the video). The 89 foot high falls is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in the vicinity of Bend. You’ll find the falls at the end of a 2 1/2 mile gravel road in the Deschutes National Forest. You can get a great view of the falls right out of the parking lot, making it accessible to everyone. We totally recommend taking the short hike to the top of the falls. The view is fantastic and there are several viewpoints to stop at on your way up. If you look closely, you can find the narrow trail that leads through the forest and behind the falls. It’s crazy! Tumalo Creek merges with Bridge Creek as they head toward the Deschutes River, and the clear icy water is beautiful. The surrounding forest is still recovering from the Bridge Creek Fire in 1979, but the greenery, the wildflowers, and the forest create the perfect backdrop to the towering falls. The Tumalo Falls Day Use Area has picnic tables, restrooms, and is the trailhead to many hiking and biking trails. If you’re visiting Bend, Oregon, Tumalo Falls should definitely be on your list.

Bend, Oregon US 97 Time Lapse: Lava Cast Forest, Tumalo Falls

This drive is divided into two parts. First, you'll see a bit of US 97 south of Bend, before turning off to the Lava Cast Forest in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. The second clip picks up the drive on US 97 again, at the turnoff to Lava Cast Forest, and then continues north, into and through Bend, and out to Tumalo Falls.

This waterfall is one of the many reasons why I love living in Bend, Oregon! It's less than 30 min away from downtown, and it's massive! Beautiful view a few steps away from the parking lot, or hike the trail to the top. There is also a hidden trail to go under the waterfall if you decide you want to cool off on a hot summer day. Once you're at the top of the waterfall, you can continue your hike and see a few smaller waterfalls a few miles in. I've been meaning to do the full hike but haven't had the chance yet. Hopefully next time!

Today we take a hike in the snowy landscape of Bend, Oregon to Tumalo Falls. It was the perfect weather to see the falls in it's winter form so we took full advantage of that!

I stop in Bend for a few days to see some sights. I stop at Lava Butte just south of Bend. It's a cool cinder cone that is very well preserved with a crater and a large lava flow extending all the way to the Deschutes River. Then I drove up to Tumalo Falls. It was very snowy there. I stopped at Benham Falls on the way back to camp but was too tired/lazy to really talk or show it properly. But hope you enjoy traveling with me anyways. LOL

This is one of our absolute favorite State Parks. In this video we take you on a walk around Tumalo State Park and a bit of the sights is Bend.
We made an attempt at hiking Tumalo Falls.. but the snow was just too much to hike in.
