Valley of the Gods Camping - Mexican Hat, Utah
One of our bucket list items on our trip through Utah was to camp out at the incredible Valley of the Gods which is located in the Mexican Hat area. A few years ago we discovered the Valley of the Gods while driving through the area and were so taken by its beauty that we were looking forward to coming back one day and spending a few days of free camping in the midst of the stunning monoliths, pinnacles and rock formations that were eroded by wind and water over time.
Since the Valley of the Gods is owned by the Bureau of Land Management, which is the administration that oversees public land, wild camping is free and open to the public:
This means dry camping without any amenities, carry in and carry out and leaving no trace is an important part of wild camping on this public land.
Since Monument Valley is only a short drive away we combined a visit to these iconic desert landscapes and enjoyed a couple relaxing nights under the stars. The night sky is incredible out there and one can see the Milky Way with the bare eye. A great place for night photography for sure. The gravel and dirt road through the Valley of the Gods is a 17 mile long loop which is great for mountain biking, hiking or taking a scenic drive.

Driving in Valley of the Gods, Mexican Hat, Utah, USA 11-10-17
Driving through Valley of the Gods where I stayed the night after pulling off in the dark onto this gravel road. I had seen the sign and thought it sounded like an interesting name and pulled off onto the washboard road and found a nice little nook to pull over and sleep in the car. Saw a tarantula whole with webbing over it. Climbed a mesa. Was wonderful. Bathed in the sun in my fold up chair. On an 8-day road trip, spur of the moment after quit Registered Nursing November 6, 2017 and deactivated my Washington state license the following day then took off south in my 2013 Volvo XC60, that I used to have, no more. Slept in my suv all but one night, where I rested in Trump Tower in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA as a controversial, political move. yolo

Utah's Valley of the Gods
The Valley of the Gods - now part of the new Bear's Ears National Monument - is located roughly 20 miles northeast of Monument Valley, Utah, in the Four Corners area, and near the small town of Mexican Hat. Very similar to Monument Valley, the 17-mile drive through it is spectacular. We also recommend a stay at the Valley of the Gods Bed and Breakfast, the only structure in the entire valley.

Valley of the Gods
Valley of the Gods, a scenic backcountry hidden gem was removed from Bears Ears National park last year during one of President Trump's initial power plays.
The sandstone valley near Mexican Hat in San Juan County, has appeared in a couple TV shows. The 1984-1987 CBS show Airwolf used a mesa in Valley of the Gods as the secret hiding place of the super-helicopter Airwolf. Also filmed in The Valley of the Gods were two episodes of the BBC science fiction show Doctor Who: The Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon.

On our way up to Moab we took a side turn to find some boondocking in the Valley of the Gods. While we had seen other Youtubers review this place it really was one of those you have to see it to really feel it's awesomeness.
Near the boarder of Arizona and Utah and Navajo nation the Valley of the Gods is a 17 mile dirt road on public lands. It is a scenic day trip or a 14 day camping experience.
Not far from Monument Valley. You can get away from the crowds and tourists and still experience the old west where many commercials and programs were filmed.
With tall red sandstone formations in the high desert landscape its a transport back in time and to remote places.

Mexican Hat Rock - Goosenecks State Park - Moki Dugway - Utah - LeAw in the USA //Ep.30
We are living the American dream driving the Historic Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica but we are doing some detours to visit some places we like.
In this 30th episode, we boondock at Mexican Hat Rock, then visit Goosenecks State Park and drive up the Moki Dugway. Enjoy the ride with us! ;)
The name Mexican Hat comes from a curiously sombrero-shaped rock outcropping on the northeast edge of town; the rock measures 60-foot (18 m) wide by 12-foot (3.7 m). The Hat has two rock climbing routes ascending it. It has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names.
Mexican Hat is a census-designated place (CDP) on the San Juan River on the northern edge of the Navajo Nations borders in south-central San Juan County, Utah, United States. The population was 31 at the 2010 census, a sharp decline from the previous two censuses.
The CDP is on U.S. Route 163 just 3 miles (5 km) south of the junction with State Route 261, and is just outside the northern boundary of both the Navajo Nation and Monument Valley. Goosenecks State Park is located just 9 miles (14 km) west.
Goosenecks State Park is a state park in the U.S. state of Utah, overlooking a deep meander of the San Juan River. The park is located near the southern border of the state a short distance from Mexican Hat, Utah. Millions of years ago, the Monument Upwarp forced the river to carve incised meanders over 1,000 feet (300 m) deep as the surrounding landscape slowly rose in elevation. Eroded by water, wind, frost, and gravity, this is a classic location for observing incised meanders.
Goosenecks State Park is largely undeveloped. Primitive campsites with picnic tables are scattered back from the edge of the cliff, and vault toilets are available. Campers are advised to bring their own water, food, and other necessary gear.
There are no developed hiking trails in the park, but the Honaker Trail, a few miles to the northwest, provides access to the San Juan River.
(Moki Dugway) State Route 261 is a state highway located entirely within south-central San Juan County, Utah. It runs 34 miles (55 km) north, from the junction of U.S. Route 163 (3 miles (4.8 km) north of Mexican Hat), to the junction with State Route 95, just east of Natural Bridges National Monument.
The highway is part of the Utah section of the Trail of the Ancients, a National Scenic Byway. It includes steep switchbacks as it traverses the Moki Dugway.
From its southern terminus north of Mexican Hat, SR-261 commences in a westerly direction. After turning north, the route encounters the Moki Dugway, becoming an unpaved road. Following this, the road continues north and terminates at SR-95 west of Blanding.
The Moki Dugway was constructed in 1958 by Texas Zinc, a mining company, to transport uranium ore from the Happy Jack mine in Fry Canyon to the processing mill in Mexican Hat. The State Road Commission added SR-261 to the state highway system in 1957, following its present alignment from SR-47 (now US-163) north of Mexican Hat to SR-95.
