Places to see in ( Modena - Italy ) Piazza Roma
The magnificent Palazzo Ducale is the protagonist of the beautiful and recently renewed Piazza Roma. At the time of the Dukedom, the square was used for official celebrations and to receive Princes and Popes who came here visiting the Estense family.
On the right of the facade, the monument represents Ciro Menotti, the Modenese leader of the insurrection of 1831 and of the Italian Risorgimento (Giuseppe Garibaldi admired him so much that he called one of this sons Menotti!). The statue was carried out by Cesare Sighinolfi in 1880: the national hero, standing with a flag, looking the Palazzo Ducale, exactly towards the wonderful gold drawing room where probably he was condemned to death by Duke Francesco IV, his opponant. At the base, his fellow conspirators: don Giuseppe Andreoli, Vincenzo Borelli, Giuseppe Ricci and Anacarsi Nardi.
The big building with a portico at number 37 is the so-called palazzo dell’Intendenza Camerale: the older houses were transformed by the Duke in the years 1836-8 to serve the court. In front of the Palazzo Ducale°°, largo San Giorgio° has its wonderful baroque church and via Farini° starts. On the left, on the red house, the Fonte d’Abisso is a little fountain flowing from one of the many underground springs. Just behind there is piazza San Domenico°.
Between the windows of the Palazzo Ducale°° there are many commemorative plaques. Starting from the right; to Luigi Carlo Farini, statesman of Emilia-Romagna in the years of the Unity of Italy and to the patriot Giuseppe Malmusi.
The third one commemorates the decision, taken in the palazzo in 1797, to declare the Italian tricolour flag as the one representing the Cisalpine Republic; the fourth is dedicated to general Manfredo Fanti; the last is for the gold medal awarded to Modena for the partisan resistance during the Second World War.

Strolling through Modena, Italy
A stroll through Modena, Italy, in May 2012. Taking in some of the iconic places in the city, such as a Spritz cocktail and aperitivi at Caffè Concerto in Piazza Grande, Via Emilia, the Giardini Pubblici, part of Piazza Roma and Via Farini, Corso Canal Grande, one of the city's newer gelaterie 'La Gelida Voglia' and of course the cathedral's tower, the Torre della Ghirlandina.

Places to see in ( Modena - Italy ) Palazzo dei Musei
The huge Palazzo dei Musei (Museums Palace) has housed since the end of the XIX century many cultural institutions. It is certainly the biggest museum-centre in Modena. On this page you can find information about: the Estense Lapidary Museum; the Art Library Luigi Poletti; the Giuseppe Graziosi Museum; the Municipal Historical Archives and the Estense University Library. Two special pages are dedicated to the Municipal Museums°° and to the Estense Gallery°°, one of the finest collection in Italy.
Modena has been defined as a ‘continuum town’, because ancient materials were always used for the construction of new builings through the centuries (and the Duomo is a wonderful example). These works of art were collected in the 1830s by Duke Francesco IV. So, under the airy vaults of the courtyard, just aroud the statue of the Duke of Ferrara, Borso d’Este, hundreds of pieces are shown.
There are sarcophagus, columns, Roman inscriptions, sometimes taken during the Middle Ages by noble families. The famous stone column, once in via Farini°, is also here. Choirs and sculptures dating back from the 13th to the 17th centuries are in the Museum as well. In the second courtyard, under a glass ceiling, there is the Roman Lapidary Museum, where a beautiful mosaic from a Roman domus and the Vetilia ara stand. This one is an important monument of the Roman era, perfectly preserved and found not many years ago during some building works.

Modena (Emilia Romagna, ITALIA): pt 2
