Mall Meandering (ep. 209): Westfield Valley Fair
Mall Meandering (ep. 209): Westfield Valley Fair
Westfield Valley Fair, formerly named and known as Valley Fair, is an upscale indoor shopping mall in San Jose, California, United States, owned by the Westfield Group. It is located in the heart of Silicon Valley, at the corner of Winchester and Stevens Creek Boulevards, straddling the border of San Jose and Santa Clara. The eastern portion of the mall (including Nordstrom and Macy's women) is located in San Jose, and the western portion (including Macy's Mens & Home) is located in Santa Clara.
Westfield Valley Fair is one of the largest malls in Northern California, and is directly across the street from another large upscale retail development, Santana Row. It has the highest-sales volume in the state with $1,150 per square foot. The shopping center consists of 273 stores, a seventeen-outlet food court, nine restaurants, and is anchored by two Macy's stores and Nordstrom.
Westfield Valley Fair is unique in that it replaced two separate 1950s-era shopping centers. The original Valley Fair Shopping Center, opened in 1956, was confined to the eastern side of the property in San Jose. It was developed and anchored by Macy's and included roughly 40 other stores including Joseph Magnin in an outdoor plaza. At the western side was another outdoor shopping center, Stevens Creek Plaza in Santa Clara. It was anchored by The Emporium and I. Magnin. For that reason, the current mall contributes sales tax revenues to both the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara, and is regulated by both city governments.
In 1986, both centers were acquired and merged into one two-level enclosed mall by The Hahn Company, creating one of the most successful shopping centers in the country, called simply Valley Fair. Nordstrom joined later in 1987, with I. Magnin closing its store in 1992. The former Emporium store became a second Macy's location in 1996, housing Macy's Men's & Home Store. The former I. Magnin housed a succession of tenants, its final one being Sports Authority, and its building sits vacant. It will be demolished, along with the former Old Navy building, as part of the mall's upcoming expansion.
In 1998, Westfield America, Inc., a predecessor of the Westfield Group and The Rouse Company acquired Valley Fair jointly from Hahn. Westfield bought out Rouse in 1999 and brought in an institutional investment partner to share its investment risk in this high-profile property. In 1998 the property was renamed Westfield Shoppingtown Valley Fair. Nordstrom replaced its location in 2001 during the grand opening of a new $165,000,000, two-phase redevelopment. The former Nordstrom reopened as additional mall retail space in the second phase in 2002. Westfield discontinued the Shoppingtown moniker in 2005.

Otis/Montgomery Elevators - Macy's Westfield Valley Fair - Santa Clara, California
Something is definitely wrong with the motor on the first elevator. Mod with none other than Dewhurst US92.
Lovely OTIS Traction Elevators-Monroe Garage-Westfield Valley Fair Mall-San Jose, CA
These are fairly new elevators and they already sound (and look) bad. That's quite a shame. This whole garage smells like sewer gas too. I do like the elevator area for the main elevators. It also appears that there was supposed to be 3 elevators, but they only installed 2 of them. The cab design makes it seem as if these are glass, but you get yeeted once the elevator starts moving. There are also two other elevators by themselves that serve slightly different floors. I filmed one of them. These are pretty beat up.

Otis?/Schindler Hydraulic Elevator at Westfield Valley Fair Mall in Santa Clara, CA Retake
On the same day, I walked past a freight elevator, as security took us through a service corridor to get to the parking garage (BOTH elevators going up to there were broken, and my dad told them), and it looked like a Montgomery, but I passed by it quickly, so I could be wrong. The original mall escalators are Otis, but this does not appear to be an Otis. Above the door, an old indicator can be seen. This elevator has Adams Survivor fixtures on the outside. On the inside, the fixtures are Elevator Research & Manufacturing fixtures, but with Adams keyswitches. Also, the Schindler elevators & escalators in the food court were all removed. Now, there are Kone escalators, which no longer go up to floor 3, and a Kone elevator. The space where the elevator used to open up on 3 is still there. The machine room is also still there.

Destroyed Indicator! KONE Ecodisc Main Mall Elevator #2-Westfield Valley Fair Mall-San Jose, CA
This elevator doesn't run bad, but the indicator is DESTROYED. I think someone used a cleaner and the solution didn't mix well with the plastic on the indicator and, well, now it's ruined. This elevator serves the two mall levels as well as the parking garage on top of the mall. Pretty basic stainless steel cab. It's a parking garage elevator more than a mall elevator. Not very appealing to the eye. This is my last video from Westfield Valley Fair Mall.

Vintage OTIS Single-File Escalators-Macy's Mens & Home-Westfield Valley Fair Mall-San Jose, CA
These are pretty cool. This Macy's store is FREAKIN HUGE! There are TWO sets of escalators. This set is single-file OTIS and the other set on the opposite side of the store is made up of OTIS and Montgomery double-file escalators. Interesting! The elevators were modded by Monty, so they might've replaced those escalators at the same time. Who knows...

Horrible Motor! Montgomery Elevators-Macy's Women's Westfield Valley Fair Mall-San Jose, CA
Oh my...the first elevator's motor sounds very unhealthy! I've never heard such a horrible traction motor before. These were modded hella!!!! These were originally OTIS with black button, then modded by Montgomery in the 90's with A-Series, then modded AGAIN by an unknown company with ERM, and now modded AGAIN by Schindler!!! That's wild! The right elevator has a broken mechanical floor-passing chime, while the left elevator has an annoying buzzer and beep. Btw, the fixtures LOOK like Innovation Pinnacle or MaD, but they're NOT. They push nothing like either, but like Adams Survivor contacts. Very interesting set of elevators indeed...

Schindler and Vintage Otis Escalators @ Macy's Men and Home, Valley Fair Mall in Santa Clara CA
(3-31-2015) The upper set of escalators must have either been replaced or added later. It is possible that the third floor was originally not open to the public as there are not many access points to it.
Also, I was followed out of this store by security. I'm not sure if I was seen in the back room with the freight elevator or just spotted on the escalator, but I could hear the man giving a description of me on his radio. He then said I was walking quickly (where I cut the camera) and followed me until I was back in the mall. Be aware that if you film here security may play a game of follow the leader with you.

Schindler Traction Elevators at Nordstrom in Westfield Valley Fair Mall in San Jose, CA
These are nice elevators. I still think Schindler MT fixtures are very low quality, but at least they look nice here, and are holding up well. Typical of most Nordstrom stores, traction elevators. This store is having some renovations. It appears they are redoing the carpet in these elevators, as part of the carpet was missing in the other elevator. I don't know if they have redone the carpet in this elevator yet.
