Alcalá de Henares , meaning Castle on the Henares , is a Spanish city located 35 kilometres northeast of the country's capital, Madrid. It stands out for its rich archaeology and was one of the first bishoprics founded in Spain. Locally, it is generally known simply as Alcalá, but de Henares is appended when needed to differentiate it from a dozen Spanish cities sharing the name Alcalá . The Latin name, Complutum, is sometimes used. The city is the capital of its namesake region, Comarca de Alcalá. Its historical centre is one of UNESCO's World Heritage sites.

It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1914.It was built by Cardinal Cisneros who commissioned architect Pedro de Gumiel to design. The foundation stone was laid in 1499, the Saint Ildefonsus` Chapel was completed in 1510; in 1516 began construction of the Paraninfo and in 1537 Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón designed the main façade. Although most of the work had been carried out by 1617 when Juan Gómez de Mora redesigned the courtyard , the construction was not finished until the second half of the 17th century.

At the time of Cardinal Cisneros he was awarded the title of Master and the current building was designed, constructed between 1497 and 1515 in late Gothic style typical of this stage.
