RIO CARNIVAL 2018, “MOCIDADE SAMBA SCHOOL, BY PAUL HODGE, HD 720p
“MOCIDADE INDEPENDENTE DO PADRE MIGUEL” SAMBA SCHOOL'S THEME FOR RIO CARNIVAL 2017 WILL FOCUS ON THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN MOCIDADE’S NEIGHBORHOOD IN RIO’S ZONA QESTE REGION TO MARRAKESH, MOROCCO. MOCIDADE’S THEME IS ENTITLED: “A THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS OF MOCIDADE TO MARRAKESH.”
“While Rio basks in the summer heat, the 40C temperatures in the Zona Oeste are often higher than the rest of the city. Seeing a similarity in Padre Miguel neighborhood’s climate with the desert climate of Marrakesh, Carnavalescos (Carnival designers) Alexandre Louzada and Edson Pereira began to make cultural links between Rio and Morocco.
The school’s enredo (plot) this year will bring audiences on a journey from the Zona Oeste to Marrakesh, in a story titled ‘As mil e uma noites de uma Mocidade pra lá de Marrakesh’ (A thousand and one nights of Mocidade to Marrakesh).
Travelling by magic carpet, camel and caravan, Mocidade will show the stories, treasures and culture of Marrakesh. Characters will include Sherazade, Sinbad, Ali Baba and Aladdin, with tales of trading spices, dishes, rugs and other luxuries in Morocco’s bazaars, which the school’s Carnavalescos also compare to Rio’s Saara.
The school will also include the legacy of the University of Riyadh, which strengthened Morocco’s academic expertise in astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, surgical medicine and culture.
Costumes will capitalize on the school’s signature green, but will also use lots of gold to evoke Morocco’s cultural wealth as well as bright colours, prints, lames and sequins. Meanwhile, the floats will show palaces, medinas, squares and gardens, displaying Marrakesh’s splendour.
‘We want to take Mocidade again to the oasis of joy. Brazil has a very strong cultural integration with Morocco,’ Louzado said, explaining how Carnival legend Joaõsinho Trinta would take samba schools to Morocco every New Year’s Eve. ‘We want to restore this union, and there’s nothing more appropriate that bringing the hottest samba battery in Brazil to Marrakesh.’
Louzada said that Mocidade’s display is a call for tolerance and peace across different cultures, showing the value of cultural co-existence and exchange. ‘We go in search of this place, [which is] so hot, to show that there is no greater heat than the human warmth of the people of Vila Vintém,’ he said.”

INOCENTES DE BELFORD ROXO is a samba school in Rio de Janeiro which is headquartered in St. Vincent Park neighborhood in the city of Belford Roxo in the Baixada Fluminense and was founded in 1993. The school’s colors are blue, red and white. Its Drummers’ Queen is Alessandra Mattos, the President is Reginaldo Gomes and its Carnavalesco is Márcio Puluker.
For the 2016 Rio Carnival Samba School Parade “Série A” competitions, the school is the third school scheduled to perform on the second/last night, Saturday 6th starting at about 10:30pm.
The school's 2016 performance theme, “Enredo”, is entitled Carlos Diegues - Pictures of a scene in Brazil, a tribute to the Brazilian film director, Carlos Diegues, also known as Cacá Diegues.

Broadcast throughout the world, Rio’s magnificent Rio Carnival Samba School Parade Championship Competitions of Rio's top twenty-seven (27) samba schools are the showcase events of the Rio Carnival 2016 celebrations. Over four nights from Friday, February 5 through Monday, February 8, 2016, the Rio’s top samba schools will perform into the wee hours of the following mornings. What at first glance might just appear to be colorful, music-filled parades, are in actuality ferociously serious competitions involving the best Samba schools in Rio and Brazil, thousands of dancers, singers, musicians, floats and budgets, prize money and endorsements totaling millions of dollars.
For the first two nights (Friday, February 5, 2016 and Saturday, February 6, 2016) of the Rio Carnival Samba School Parade Championship Competitions, fourteen samba schools (7 each night) in the “Série A” League (formally “Access Group”, “Group A”) will compete in the Rio Carnival 2016 Second League Samba School Parade Competitions. The winner of this 2016 competition will be promoted to the Special Group and will participate in the 2017 Special Group Competitions for the Rio Carnival 2017 Samba School Parade Championship.

The first festivals of Rio date back to 1823. GRES Imperatriz Leopoldinense at the carnival, in 1999 Mangueira samba school parades in the Sambadrome in the 1998 Carnival. A Samba school parades in the Sambadrome in the 2004 Carnival. The typical Rio carnival parade is filled with revelers, floats and adornments from numerous samba school which are located in Rio (more than 200 approximately, divided into 5 leagues/divisions.) A samba school is composed of a collaboration of local neighbours that want to attend carnival together, with some kind of regional, geographical common background. The Top League, called the Special Group of Samba schools in 2012 include: GRES Unidos da Tijuca, Mocidade Independente, GRES Imperatriz Leopoldinense, GRES Uniao da Ilha do Governador, GRES Acadêmicos do Salgueiro, Portela, whose origin remounts to the single first samba group in Rio, GRES São Clemente, the traditional GRES Estação Primeira de Mangueira, founded by Cartola, samba composer and singer and Fluminense Football Club famous fan, GRES Acadêmicos do Grande Rio, located at Duque de Caxias city, GRES Unidos de Vila Isabel, Beija-Flor de Nilópolis, and finally Inocentes de Belford Roxo, which won the Access Division in 2012 Rio Carnival contest. One of the many main purposes of the Rio carnival parade is for samba schools to compete with fellow rival... not (they are called co-sisters) samba-schools; this competition is the climax of the whole carnival festival in this city, related to the samba-schools environment. Each school chooses a theme to try and portray in their entry. The samba schools work to build the best floats,costumes, lyrics, aesthetics, to represent their themes ( in Carnival terminology called enredo), and to include the best music they can from their drumming band called the bateria. There are many parts to each school's entry including the six to eight floats and up to 4,000 ( four thousand ) revelers per Samba-school of the so-called Special group. There is a special order that every school has to follow with their parade entries. Each school begins with the comissão de frente (Commission of Front in English), which is the first wing. The comissão de frente is made up of ten to fifteen people only, and they are the ones who introduce the school and set the mood. These people have choreographic dances in fancy costumes that usually tell a short story. Following the comissão de frente is the first float of the samba school, called abre-alas ( Opening Wing in English). Some of the important roles include the porta-bandeira and mestre-sala. The porta-bandeira is a very important lady who is in charge of the samba school flag, including making sure to not allow the flag to roll. She is accompanied by the mestre-sala, who is supposed to draw everyone's attention to his queen, the porta-bandeira. Floatees, who are also important, are the people who populate the floats, also known as destaques. The floatees have the most luxurious and expensive costumes that can be extremely heavy. “IMPERIO SERRANO is a samba school in Rio de Janeiro which is headquartered in St. Vincent Park neighborhood in the city of Belford Roxo in the Baixada Fluminense and was founded in 1993. The school’s colors are blue, red and white. Its Drummers’ Queen is Alessandra Mattos, the President is Reginaldo Gomes and its Carnavalesco is Márcio Puluker.
For the 2016 Rio Carnival Samba School Parade Série A Group competitions, the school is scheduled to be the third school to perform on the Série A Group's second day at 10:30 pm in the evening of Saturday, February 6, 2016.
The school's 2016 performance theme, “enredo”, is entitled Carlos Diegues - Pictures of a scene in Brazil, a tribute to the Brazilian film director, Carlos Diegues, also known as Cacá Diegues.

Broadcast throughout the world, Rio’s magnificent Rio Carnival Samba School Parade Championship Competitions of Rio's top twenty-seven (27) samba schools will be the showcase events of the Rio Carnival 2016 celebrations. Over four nights from Friday, February 5 through Monday, February 8, 2016, the Rio’s top samba schools will perform all night into the early morning hours of the following day. What at first glance might just appear to be colorful, music-filled parades, are in actuality ferociously serious competitions involving the best Samba schools in Rio and Brazil, thousands of dancers, singers, musicians, floats and budgets, prize money and endorsements totaling millions of dollars.
For the first two nights (Friday, February 5, 2016 and Saturday, February 6, 2016) of the Rio Carnival Samba School Parade Championship Competitions, fourteen samba schools (7 each night) in the Série A Group (formally “Access Group”, “Group A) will compete in the Rio Carnival 2016 Série A Group Samba School Parade Competitions. The winner of this 2016 competition will be promoted to the Special Group and will participate in the 2017 Special Group Competitions for the Rio Carnival 2017 Samba School Parade Championship.

The Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro is a world famous festival held before Lent every year and considered the biggest carnival in the world with two million people per day on the streets. The first festivals of Rio date back to 1823. GRES Imperatriz Leopoldinense at the carnival, in 1999 Mangueira samba school parades in the Sambadrome in the 1998 Carnival. A Samba school parades in the Sambadrome in the 2004 Carnival. The typical Rio carnival parade is filled with revelers, floats and adornments from numerous samba school which are located in Rio (more than 200 approximately, divided into 5 leagues/ divisions.) A samba school is composed of a collaboration of local neighbours that want to attend carnival together, with some kind of regional, geographical common background. The Top League, called the Special Group of Samba schools in 2012 include: GRES Unidos da Tijuca, Mocidade Independente, GRES Imperatriz Leopoldinense, GRES Uniao da Ilha do Governador, GRES Acadêmicos do Salgueiro, Portela, whose origin remounts to the single first samba group in Rio, GRES São Clemente, the traditional GRES Estação Primeira de Mangueira, founded by Cartola, samba composer and singer and Fluminense Football Club famous fan, GRES Acadêmicos do Grande Rio, located at Duque de Caxias city, GRES Unidos de Vila Isabel, Beija-Flor de Nilópolis, and finally Inocentes de Belford Roxo, which won the Access Division in 2012 Rio Carnival contest. One of the many main purposes of the Rio carnival parade is for samba schools to compete with fellow rival... not (they are called co-sisters) samba-schools; this competition is the climax of the whole carnival festival in this city, related to the samba-schools environment. Each school chooses a theme to try and portray in their entry. The samba schools work to build the best floats,costumes, lyrics, aesthetics, to represent their themes ( in Carnival terminology called enredo), and to include the best music they can from their drumming band called the bateria. There are many parts to each school's entry including the six to eight floats and up to 4,000 ( four thousand ) revelers per Samba-school of the so-called Special group. There is a special order that every school has to follow with their parade entries. Each school begins with the comissão de frente (Commission of Front in English), which is the first wing. The comissão de frente is made up of ten to fifteen people only, and they are the ones who introduce the school and set the mood. These people have choreographic dances in fancy costumes that usually tell a short story. Following the comissão de frente is the first float of the samba school, called abre-alas ( Opening Wing in English). Some of the important roles include the porta-bandeira and mestre-sala. The porta-bandeira is a very important lady who is in charge of the samba school flag, including making sure to not allow the flag to roll. She is accompanied by the mestre-sala, who is supposed to draw everyone's attention to his queen, the porta-bandeira. Floatees, who are also important, are the people who populate the floats, also known as destaques. The floatees have the most luxurious and expensive costumes that can be extremely heavy. Along with all the floatees is one main floatee that is located at the top of each float. The main destaque dances and sings for the entire time that the float is on the runway. One other aspect that is mandatory is the presence of the ala das baianas. This is a wing of the samba school entry that includes at least 100 females only. These women along with many other people do not ride on the floats as many others do, instead they are passistas, the people who belong to the samba school that do the marching alongside and between the floats. As the parade is taking place in the Sambodromo and the balls are being held in the Copacabana Palace and beach, many of the carnival participants are at other locations. Street festivals are very common during carnival and are highly populated by the locals. Elegance and extravagance are usually left behind, but music and dancing are still extremely common. Anyone is allowed to participate in the street festivals. Bandas and bondos are very familiar with the street carnival especially because it takes nothing to join in on the fun except to jump in. One of the most well known bandas of Rio is Banda de Ipanema. Banda de Ipanema was first created in 1965 and is known as Rio's most irreverent street band. Incorporated into every aspect of the Rio carnival are dancing and music. The most famous dance is the samba, a Brazilian dance with African influences. The samba was created by the African . The samba remains a popular dance not only in carnival but in the ghetto villages outside of the main cities.
