    The Empire ships were a series of ships in the service of the British Government. Their names were all prefixed with Empire. Mostly they were used during the Second World War by the Ministry of War Transport , which owned the ships but contracted out their management to various shipping lines. Some ships requisitioned during the Suez Crisis were also given the Empire prefix. They were acquired from a number of sources.     The Aiguilles de Bavella are rocky spikes of red granite that dominate the hill of the same name. The name means needles of Bavella. At 1218 m, the hill connects the Alta Rocca to the east coast of Corsica. This massif is smaller yet much more popular than the aiguilles de Popolasca. The site is characterized by jagged peaks, large rock walls and pine trees twisted by the wind.
