SR Battle of Britain Class No: 34067 Tangmere, in BR Brunswick Green livery, passes EAL on a breezy, dry, bright late-Spring morning as it heads the Up SMN Golden Arrow Statesman from PBG to CBW (steam-hauled from HAN to CBW) on the Up Relief Line of the GWML on the 1st leg of its steam-hauled journey from HAN Bridge Loop Sidings (engine change) to Cranwell Down Loop (crew change). It's a joy to see Tangmere even though it's a familiar friend. It was touch and go whether the Southall staff would get Tangmere ready for today as the engine developed valve gear problems last Sunday and was failed at NWH. Well done West Coast maintenance staff. It's Saturday 15th June 2013 and the time was 10:07, Tangmere was right on time.

Trivia time. This was the 32nd Up main-line steam excursion of 2013 to London, 4 less than at this stage last year. This is Tangmere's 9th Up run to London of 2013, 6 more than at this stage last year. This is the 4th Up SMN special to London, 2 more than last year. This is the 9th Up steam special of 2013 to run past EAL. That's the same as last year.

EAL is an important interchange hub on the London rail system in West London as the station enables commuters to interchange with Central Line trains to/from Epping, District Line trains to/from Upminster, FGW and HC Metro trains to and from PAD and a variety of other destinations There are 8 Platforms. Platform 1 faces the Down Main and is rarely used. Platforms 2 and 3 form an island, I stood on Platform 3 which serves the Down Relief whereas Platform 2 faces the Up Main and is rarely used. Platforms 4 and 5 form an island but each side is fenced off. Platform 4 faces the Up relief whereas Platform 5 is one of the two Central Lines bays. Platforms 6 and 7 form an island. Platform 6 is the 2nd Central Line bay whereas Platform 7 is the 1st District Line bay. Platform 8 is the 2nd District Line bay. In the hour from 09:37 to 10:37 21 down trains and 21 Up trains pass EAL (not counting LU trains). Of the 21 Down trains 13 pass EAL and 8 stop. The 13 passing trains go to BDW (1FGW); BRI (1FGW); Calvert (1Freight); CNM (1FGW); Heathrow Airport T5 (4HX); HFD (1FGW); OXF (1 FGW); PNZ (1FGW); SWA (1FGW) and WSM (1FGW). The 8 stopping trains go to Heathrow Airport (T123) (2HC); GFD (2FGW); OXF (2FGW) and RDG (2FGW). Of the 21 Up trains 13 pass EAL and 8 stop. The 13 passing trains go to CBW (1SMN) and PAD (8FGW+4HX). The 8 stopping trains go to PAD (6FGW and 2HC).

EAL opened with the GWML in June 1838. In 1877 the GWML was widened to 4 tracks. In 1879 the Metropolitan-District Railway reached EAL. In 1892 the GWR abandoned the Broad Gauge system. In 1905 the Met-District was electrified with a 4th rail system. Then, in 1917, a splendid station roof was built over the GWR line to SPB and this was taken over by Central Line electric trains in 1920.You can see the roof to Tangmere's left. In 1948 EAL was taken over by BR. Steam was abolished by 1965 and the present bare characterless station was created at the same time. In 1996 the metro trains became Thames Trains while the main line services became FGW. In 1998 the line was electrified for the HX trains. In 2003 the metro trains calling at EAL were taken over by FGW. In 2005 FGW and HX launched the HC metro service. The first electric metro service on the GWML.
