SOUTH KOREA - Top 10 Interesting Facts (Part 1)
South Korea – A Basic Introduction
Part 2:
Are you familiar with South Korea? If you’re not, you’re missing out on a quirky yet brilliant, cultured yet modern country full of life and fantastic experiences. South Korea might be a small country, but as you will see, it is a wonderful and surprisingly diverse place that boasts a number of impressive achievements. Here are a few things you should know about South Korea.
10. South Koreans have a very unusual approach to age. Every South Korean child is considered to be one-year-old when it is born, and it will turn two on the next Lunar New Year. So be careful when asking a Korean for their age as they will likely tell you they are 1 or even 2 years older than they would be in the international age system. They do, however, still celebrate their birthdays.
9. South Korea is the world leader in internet connectivity, having by far the world's fastest average internet connection speed. About 92.4% of the population are internet users. South Korea has the world’s fastest wireless speeds on the planet, with an average download speed 33.5 megabits per second, nearly three times the average speed of second-place Hong Kong.
8. The iconic song Gangnam Style by the South Korean musician Psy became the first YouTube video to reach 1 billion views. Now it has over 2.8 billion views and it has been YouTube's most watched video since November 2012, when it surpassed Baby by Justin Bieber.
7. Most South Korean restaurants (including fast food like McDonald´s) offer food delivery via motorcycle drivers who are notorious for speeding through traffic (including pedestrians on the pavement) to deliver the food on time. After you are done eating, you can just put your dirty dishes outside your door and the delivery guy will come for them later.
6. A misconception known as the fan death is common in South Korea. Many South Koreans believe that leaving an electric fan on overnight may kill the person sleeping below it. The genesis of the misconception is unclear but fears about electric fans date almost to their introduction to Korea in the 1920's.
5. With more than 11 shots of liquor per person per week, South Korea totally dominates liquor consumption per capita. Runners-up Russians, notorious for their drinking habits, drink “just” 5 shots per person per week. South Koreans top the list worldwide in terms of hard liquor consumption, and Jinro Soju, Korean distilled rice liquor, is the best-selling liquor in the world.
4. Despite being located right next to North Korea, an infamous aggressor, South Korea is one of the safest and most peaceful countries in the world. It has an extremely low crime rate and very strict gun policy. Also, almost every kid in the country studies and practices the Korean national sport, Tae Kwon Do, which teaches respect for others and discipline over aggressive emotions. This could be a significant contributing factor to the level of safety in the country.
3. Many South Koreans suffer from tetraphobia – fear of the number 4. The floor number 4 is almost always skipped in hospitals and public buildings. In other buildings, the fourth floor is sometimes labelled F instead of 4 in elevators. Apartment numbers containing multiple occurrences of the number 4 (such as 404) are also likely to be avoided.
2. Each July, the town of Boryeong (200 km south of Seoul) hosts arguably the largest mud festival in the world. The Boryeong Mud Festival features various mud contests and fights but also massages and therapies. Since it was staged in 1998, the festival has attracted millions of visitors to Boryeong.
1. Samsung alone is responsible for 20% of South Korea´s $1.1 trillion economy. While most people think Samsung only produces electronics, the company also manufactures armoured vehicles, oil tankers, appliances, door locks, medical equipment and much more.
Despite reaching the end of the list, there are a few honourable mentions I feel deserve to be said, so here goes…
- South Korea is the largest market for plastic surgery per capita in the world. It is estimated between 1/5 and 1/3 of the women in Seoul have gone under the knife for at least one cosmetic procedure.
- Valentine’s Day in South Korea is celebrated with a twist. It is a day where women show their love for their men by giving chocolates and gifts to their husbands or boyfriends. On March 14, Koreans celebrate White Day, where men buy gifts for their ladies―but they are supposed to spend three times the amount they received on Valentine’s Day.

Visiting Songtan 송탄 (American Army Base) in Pyeongtaek 평택, South Korea
On the weekend we visited Songtan 송탄 for International cuisine, an area known for an American Military Base (Osan Air Base), in Pyeongtaek 평택, South Korea. Situated strategically between my Korean apartment in Pyeongtaek and Audrey's Korean apartment in Yongin, Songtan is a convenient meeting point for us on the weekends. Although this area isn't nearly as charming as foreign friendly districts in Seoul, such as Itaewon or Insadong, the food here - especially the International dining options - is superb.

As we wandered around in search of pleasing our palettes, we couldn't help but notice the plethora of dodgy looking bars and night clubs. With loud thumping music, raucous yelling and ladies wearing short skirts, this little strip is a bit like Sin City.
If one is willing to look beyond the seedy aspect, a number of fantastic restaurants exist. With a plethora of different International restaurants we spotted some serving Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Turkish, Greek, Peruvian, Indian, Italian and Brazilian to name just a few.
We finally settled on a combination of eating a kebab at a Turkish fast food joint followed up by a sit down meal at a wonderful Mexican restaurant featuring a cook native to Mexico.
Another reason we came to Songtan was to find a large jar of peanut butter and deodorant. Deodorant in Korea is much different than western styles and we certainly prefer the type from back home. We ended up only buying deodorant (even though it was overpriced) out of necessity but skipped out on the peanut butter that was outrageously overpriced.
Overall, our impression of Songtan is mixed. Indeed, we love the International dining options, especially considering both Yongin and Pyeongtaek are limited in this area; however, the seedy nature of this district also makes us feel a bit unsafe and not somewhere we'd want to linger for hours on end.
Thus, we came, we ate, we conquered and we just as quickly returned back home.

Hey buddy! Come here.
We are exploring Songtan today. It is an area known for lots of foreigners. There is an American military base over here. They have lots of foreign restaurants.
We are checking out this area and if you want to hook up you came to the right spot. Should we go to the hook up club later on baby? Perhaps.
Songtan is full of restaurants that cater to foreigners so we are going to show you some of those.
Mexican.
Turkish.
Thai.
Japanese.
Brazilian.
Korean barbecue.
English.
Chinese.
Indian and Pakistani.
We just found some very colorful wigs over here. I am debating going for a blue bob cut. What do you think? Would that look good? You should get it. Yeah. I'll buy it for you.
Yeah, so I am on a quest for deodorant. How are you smelling right now? I'm okay but I could use some soon.
And look at what we found - some deodorant. Some we're not going to stink up the whole country now huh?
We were a little ripped off I think. We paid eight dollars for each of these. Yeah, we were definitely ripped off. It just seems like a bit much. It's the price to pay to smell good in Korea. I guess.
What do you got there? Bracelet made in India. Let's see it.

Hwaseong Fortress, Suwon, South Korea
We took a short trip to Suwon to see Hwaseong Fortress during the spring. This video shows some of the beautiful sites and colors that really make this a great way to spend the day.
Address: 910, Jeongjo-ro, Paldal-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do

From the visitkorea.or.kr: Introduction
Hwaseong Fortress is an impressive structure from the latter part of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) and the official fortress of Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do. The fortress, constructed from 1794 to 1796, was built as a display of King Jeongjo’s filial piety towards his father and to build a new pioneer city with its own economic power.
The fortress wall stretches for a total of 5.52km and has a great variety of military facilities that are hard to find anywhere else. Four gates face each of the cardinal directions—Janganmun (north), Paldalmun (south), Changnyongmun (east), and Hwaseomun (west)—and the seven-arch style Sumun gates straddle the point where the nearby stream reaches the palace. Above the Sumun gates is a pavilion called Hwahongmun.
Hwaseong Fortress was constructed under the guidance of Yu Hyeong-Won (1622-1673) and Jeong Yak-Yong (1762-1836), and is believed to have been constructed very scientifically. The fortress wall was built using Seokjae and Jeondol (bricks) and the holes between the bricks are just big enough to fire guns, arrows, or long spears through in case of an attack.
During construction of the fortress Jeong Yak-Yong invented ‘Geojunggi,’ which uses a ‘hwalcha’ (lever) to lift up heavy stones, greatly reducing construction time.
The Suwon Hwaseong Fortress went through many turbulent times and damage, and in the battle of June 25th, many of the facilities became so damaged that they were deemed irreparable. Even though the fortress restoration initiative (1975-1979) restored many of the sites to their former glory, Paldalmun to Dongnamgakru (an area 491 meters in length) has still not been renovated.
The fortress was designated as Historic Site No. 3 in January 1963, and in December 1997, it was designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. A variety of performances and events are held at the fortress every day and Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival takes place here in autumn.
