The Brattleboro Retreat is a private not-for-profit mental health and addictions hospital that provides comprehensive inpatient, partial hospitalization, and outpatient treatment services for children, adolescents, and adults. Located just north of downtown Brattleboro, Vermont, United States, the retreat is situated on more than 1,000 acres of land along the Retreat Meadows inlet of the West River. Founded in 1834, the retreat was the first facility for the care of the mentally ill in Vermont, and one of the first ten private psychiatric hospitals in the United States. Fort Dummer was a British fort built in 1724 during Dummer's War by the colonial militia of the Province of Massachusetts Bay under the command of Lieutenant Timothy Dwight in what is now the Town of Brattleboro in southeastern Vermont. The fort was the first permanent European settlement in Vermont. It consisted of a 180-square foot wooden stockade near 42.8309°N 72.5504°W / 42.8309; -72.5504, with 12 guns manned by 55 men . Near the former site of the fort is a granite monument one mile south of the Brattleboro railway station. The fort was named after Lieutenant Governor William Dummer, who was acting governor of Massachusetts at the time of the fort's construction. On October 11, 1724, seventy Abenakis attacked Fort Dummer and killed 3 or 4 soldiers.

Now closed to traffic, the Town lattice truss bridge formerly carried Guilford Road across Whetstone Brook, just south of Vermont Route 9. The Latchis Hotel and Theatre is an art deco building in Brattleboro, Vermont first built in 1938. The building is one of only two extant Art Deco buildings in Vermont. The building is run by the Brattleboro Arts Initiative, a local non-profit.The building was constructred as a memorial to Demetrius P. Latchis, a Greek immigrant who became an important businessman in Brattleboro, by his sons. Latchis had built a business which ran fourteen theatres throughout New England. The interior include murals and other artwork with Greek mythology, which was created by Hungarian muralist Louis Jambor. The building also includes terrazzo flooring.
