Historically, the city has played an important role in trade and culture, due to its strategic position on the Italian Peninsula and its natural port on the Adriatic Sea. The city remains a major port for trade with Greece and the Middle East. Its industries include agriculture, chemical works, and the generation of electricity. The city of Brindisi was the provisional government seat of the Kingdom of Italy from September 1943 to February 1944.

    Imperia Porto Maurizio railway station was one of two stations serving the city and comune of Imperia, in Liguria, northwestern Italy. Opened in 1872, it formed part of the Genoa–Ventimiglia railway, and was situated just over two thirds along the way from Genoa towards Ventimiglia. It was replaced on December 11, 2016, along with Imperia's other former railway station, Imperia Oneglia, 2.2 kilometres to the east, by a new inland station, simply named Imperia, situated on a new double-track line replacing the old coastal route.The station was managed by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana , however, the commercial area of the passenger building was managed by Centostazioni.
