Bunnik Tours give Sri Lanka a helping hand
Bunnik tours have been working on community projects within the Sri Lankan community for several years now. In 2015, Frank Bunnik along with his Rotary Club led an initiative to deliver and fit 250 prosthetic hands to locals in need. This relatively small country has over 3000 amputees from both war & farming injuries. As they travelled across the country, the team fitted young and old with simple & affordable hand-made wooden prosthetics. While these wooden hands may be simple, their impact is profound. In this heart-warming video you'll see first-hand as the team fits and trains recipients and watch as they regain their ability to write, brush their teeth and carry everyday objects. Something most of us take for granted.
Each year, Frank Bunnik visits Sri Lanka with our Bunnik Tour groups and shares his charitable work with our travellers. Over the years Frank has participated in many community projects from the delivery of essential services such as water & electricity to the supply of musical instruments for school children.
Sri Lanka: Colombo to Yala (and Elephants)
After getting some passport stuff done in Colombo we hopped on the bikes and went South-East, towards Yala and the other beautiful National Parks of Sri Lanka. Along the way we visited an elephant orphanage, met some elephants at the side of the road, then met more, less friendly elephants at the side of the road.

It is the largest of the 25 districts of Sri Lanka, with an area of 7,133 km².Monaragala District.Monaragala, meaning the 'rock of peacock landing' is a district in Uva Province, Sri Lanka. Moneragala district is mainly made up of rubber, cocoa and sugar cane plantations and paddy lands.The valley is mostly dry. The townships are located in the flat land. The main occupation of those who live here is farming. Cultivation of land is linked to the monsoon. The savanna like plain has its share of wildlife such as elephants, peacock, fox, buffalo, deer and elk.The lush green hills form a wet zone (microclimate) deep within Sri Lanka's dry savanna like plain. Springs originate in here. The hills are crowded with rubber and cocoa plantations, wild trees and overgrown tea plants. Anteater, wild boar, barking deer, mouse deer, hare, porcupine, python and monkeys are some of the common animals found in these jungles. The hills are the delight of trackers. Few other railway journeys in the world could come close to this. Riding the rails might not be the first method of transport you think of when visiting the island, but Sri Lanka train journeys offer a serious wealth of cultural and scenic splendour. The line was originally built by the British to transport Ceylon tea from the colonial plantations to the capital for export. Today it stitches together the epic landscapes and the must-see travel destinations of, Kandy, Hatton and Nuwara Eliya, Ella and Wellawaya. This makes a few days riding the railway into Hill Country a simple and unforgettable way for travelers to experience some of Sri Lanka’s true highlights.
Along the way you’ll visit Colombo, the Royal Botanical Gardens Peradeniya near Kandy, the Temple of the Tooth, Adam’s Peak, Hatton tea plantations, Ceylon tea estates, Nuwara Eliya, Jetwing St Andrew’s hotel and Ella before relaxing in the oasis of waterfalls, forest and paddy fields that is Wellawaya and Jetwing Kaduruketha.

Maligawila Monastery complex, near Butthala, Sri Lanka.
I saw the Maligawila Buddha statue first in 1966. The statue made of sandstone was lying horizontally on the ground and it was broken at the neck. Quite a lot of vandalism of these statues occurred to remove hidden treasures ('Nidhaana') secreted inside them. Mr.Premadasa our ex President was responsible to get this statue standing erect.
